For *Geartronic* transmission. Remove first the bezel piece trim around the shifter lever - read at the end of this comment for details. Then put the key in PosII (engine off), press the brakes and move the shifter to the manual shifting position, then disconnect the car battery. When finished, keep key in PosII, put shifter in P, connect battery. For *Aisin* 5 speed transmission put the key in POSII (engine off), press brake pedal and move the shifter to gear 2, disconnect the car battery. When finished, keep key in PosII, put shifter in P, connect battery. Thanks so much for this video. I needed to replace the HU-650 unit on my 07 XC70, I could not have done it without the the attention to detail in your video. Yours si one of the few YT videos that makes the important distinction betweent the 01-04 and 05-07 carrs, which requre different disassembly procedures. If I could suggest any improvements, it would be as follows: 1. Rleleasing the green electrical connector block for the climate control module (CCM) is almost impossible due ti the cramped location of the release tab. I managed to do it using a pick with a 90-degree tip. After diasassembly I could see there is an easier way. Disconnect all the other electrical connectors, you will have enough slack to manouvre the entire assembly to unscrew the 4 screws that hold the CCM, pop the CCM out a bit and you have easy access to the connector block release tab. 2. At the end of your video you mention it is possible to remove the front facia trim of the HU-650 unit, but you do not describe how to do that.. In my case, the erplacement HU-650 uint had a broken tab at the bottom of the facia trim panel. I wanted to swap the fascia trim panels. I unscrewed the two obvious side screws, but that was not enough. In the end, I bailed due to uncertainty as to how much disassembly was required to do the swap. I installed the HU-650 as-is with the broken tab, it seems to be holding fine. It would have been helpful to me to know how to remove the fascia trim from the radio unit.

Always very detailed and right on advice. I'm on the lookout for a used HU-850 as I have a HU-650 and found speakers and pre-amp already. Do you ever see them in your parts yards? Where do you live?

I did this once before I saw this video....and lost one of the screws. Stuff some rags into the console to "catch" the screws in case they slip off your driver/finger.

why do you need to have the key in that position i am removing my stereo to send it away to be repaired

Removing the radio will cause an SRS message and light if the battery is connected. When you get back the radio, it's good to have the key in POS II (headlights on) at the moment of connecting back the battery, this can prevent a small thermistor from burning inside the climate module (which would cause climate module issues)

Does the radio lock out or become disabled when replacing the original radio with another OEM one? My current radio doesn’t work and I’m going to buy an OEM one. Just not sure if the radio would get locked out when I plug it in and activate it.

From what I remember, Volvo did not use radio lock codes on this generation. That said, the best is to replace the radio with one from the same year to have the best chances it has a firmware compatible to your car. Make sure to disconnect the car battery when replacing the radio, otherwise there is a good chance it will trigger and SRS error message and light. If your radio has external amplifier under front passenger seat, often times it's this amp that fails leaving only the dash speaking working.

Use a butter-knife blade, insert on the sides near the corners of the large trim and gently pry up. It should come out easily, just careful not to scratch the surface

When you undo the climate module connectors, the car will display an SRS message and a dash light - only advanced code readers can clear this light. Same can happen when disconnecting the radio or the ampli. Also, have the key in POSII when disconnecting and connecting back the battery, with the headlights on, some people had a small temp sensor failing and the climate module stopped working properly

He stares in the video it is not necessary to remove the shift knob. I just did a HU-650 swap without removing the shift knob. Follow his instructions carefully. Key in Position 2, move the shift lever to "Drive" position, disconnect the battery.
