Changing the Alternator on a first generation Volvo S80. Due to the first replacement putting out too many volts (almost 18v) sought a replacement.

Got the car back today. No issue with the Alternator, Regulator, Battery, Wiring or ECU. But the vibration is because the previously fitted (by a garage working for the dealer I bought the car from) vacuum engine mounts are not operating and poorly fitted. To replace with Volvo OE parts, and with Labour £680.00. If have all five engine mounts (some are solid rubber) it’s £830.00. So I’m going to have only the vacuum mounts changed as the other three were only done 3 months ago and were decent Febi-Bilstein parts which cost me over £350.00 to have done.

Robin, what happened to the sound, normally great quality.

I guess you mean the wind noise - which I can’t do anything about as is just shot on a phone and was alas, a windy day. I might get one of those Bluetooth clip on Mic’s I’ve seen people using to help.

Nothing at all. But thanks for watching and your comment. No longer am I doing boating videos so about 3 years ago changes the channel to ‘Life, Captured’ and began sharing videos about anything.

Could it be that you need to tell the car that it has a new battery (program the new battery to the car with a scan tool via obd port)? l say this because l heard that some cars will charge an old battery at a higher rate, then when you fit a new battery the car dosnt know and will over charge the new battery. l know very little about cars but might be worth asking.if this the case with your car. l hope this helps Rob.

No it’s a basic setup and having been to the Volvo Specialist the diagnostic is there is nothing wrong with the Alternator and Regulator I’ve fitted in the video. Likely was with the first one fitted which is removed. In temperatures below 5°c and with little load it will charge at up to 14.9v - so my 14.6v to 14.8v is within normal range. Not to say perfect for the battery but is how this Volvo’s system is programmed to be. However the vibration is down to badly fitted and inferior vacuum engine mounts the dealer I bought the car off had fitted. Garage wants to replace with original Volvo parts. I’d go for all five (3 of which are solid rubber) it’s £830.00 inc labour. I’d go for just the two vacuum mounts it’s £680.00. I had the solid rubber mounts changed about 3 months ago with Febi-Bilstein parts so not sure I agree Volvo OE parts would do much better there so going to just have the vacuum mounts done. Then it will be new discs and pads all round, brake fluid change, and four new Michelin tyres and should be good for a while!
