Driving the new Volvo since April- still positively surprising me! Steering is pretty perfect. Engine and gearbox responding so well. Fuel consumption is very good, saving me money- average consumption is 29,6( very often with 28 tons of load, 44T gross weight). Thank You Volvo!

Dear Volvo, I'm glad to see that all your fancy technology is only available for the rest of the world while us Americans get to deal with the old Volvo technology from the early 2000s.
@DaHitch
@DaHitch 11 жыл бұрын
The reason for this is presumably because trucks in the US run on 2 12 Volt batteries in parallel, so the entire truck runs on 12V. In Europe however trucks run on 2 batteries in series, thus 24V. The New Volvo (FH & FM) have a massive amount of ECU's on board, all running on 24V. For Volvo to introduce these new models in the US all the electronics and electrics would have to be redesigned. Considering Volvo is still in the process of rolling out the new FM and the heavy variants in production facilities around the world I wouldn't expect the new FH/FM to come to the US any time soon.
@sripatify
@sripatify 11 жыл бұрын
***** Or just start selling 24V systems in'merica?
@DaHitch
@DaHitch 11 жыл бұрын
They might just do that, but I believe there's a reason they build trucks that run on 12V for the US market. I'm just not sure what that reason is, I'd have to ask an expert at work.
@SlackTastic
@SlackTastic 10 жыл бұрын
Typical trucks in North America are running 4 batteries at 12 Volts. I read somewhere that there are some carriers testing a Volvo FH here in Canada, complete with 24 Volt electrical systems. Any unforeseen incompatibilities with the trucks and electrical systems may be modified, and the Euro style Volvos may be placed for sale here afterwards. Please sign me up for testing/ purchase Volvo!

Sweeeds put your belt on BEFORE you start the truck? A bit presemptious...Isn't that more work? Because here in the USA with our crap electronics in our trucks ( our trucks 7 years old but still), we usually wait to see if it starts n has check engine on before we buckle up....I like Volvo...drove one a short time, was a nice truck.
@gabriel1205
@gabriel1205 11 жыл бұрын
If they have the same laws as Norway on this, starting the vehicle without the seatbelt is a minor violation of the law. you are required to wear a seatbelt if the vehicle is in operation (the vehicle is classified as "in operation" from the second you start it until you turn the key and stop the engine), and not doing so will get you a ticket, costing you roughly 140 dollars.
@ncdave4life
@ncdave4life 11 жыл бұрын
gabriel1205 Really?? That seems ridiculous. A seatbelt is of no use if the vehicle isn't moving. What if you need to leave the vehicle while it is parked but idling?
@gabriel1205
@gabriel1205 11 жыл бұрын
David Burton Yes really, offcourse you're not allowed to leave the car while it's idling.(unless it's an emergency of some sort). why would you need to leave the car while it's idling?
@StonesDunedin
@StonesDunedin 11 жыл бұрын
gabriel1205 .. well, not exactly "leave" the car. For example, if you have been working on the car you could have the engine idling while you check under the bonnet/hood for leaks or unusual noises, or do things like check the exhaust for too much smoke. .. Also, you could stop on the side of the road, and have the engine idling while you remove debris from the road (safely), or help an old person cross the road, or open a gate, etc. ... and it is common in countries that have very cold winters to leave the car warming up and demisting the windows for a while before you are able to drive it. .. I believe, some high performance turbo-charged cars are designed to keep the engine running for a short time after turning off the ignition to reduce the chances of damaging the turbo bearings. (ie. it keeps the oil flowing for a while to help cool the turbo.)
@gabriel1205
@gabriel1205 11 жыл бұрын
Heh, well, you are supposed to turn of the car if you intend to leave it. if keeping the car on is necesarry for some reason the police will understand and let you off, I know cold countries often leave the car on for a bit before you get in, I come from northern norway so I do it, it's not allowed but honestly it's not like I'm gonna get caught in my own driveway.

Only medium weight..? The FH is made for heavy hard work - the more weight, the better they pull!
@dankinusmc1
@dankinusmc1 10 жыл бұрын
Well, Medium weight in the heavy haul rating, so 250,000 pounds would be the top, empty weight would be around 80,000 pounds
@garethifan1034
@garethifan1034 10 жыл бұрын
So just in the FH'S comfort zone then..and for the 750 big banger..just warming up. They regularly work over here solo at 150 Metric tonnes i.e.1Tonne=2200lbs not the 2000lbs US short ton (as we know it). I'm sure you would love it..esp the 750. Have a look at 'Heanor Heavy Haulage' see what they do with them. Greets from the UK.

Why do European trucks have 2 axles on the truck and 3 axles on the trailer whereas American trucks typically have 3 axles on the truck and 2 on the trailer? I would think that having 2 axles on the truck would be better for weight distribution.

I can remember when the large trucks did not have any form of power steering and instead had massive steering wheels in order for the driver to have enough leverage to steer the vehicle. I can also remember the power steering on the cars back in the '60s where it was not speed sensitive and it was always fully on, so whether at highway speeds or stopped, you could turn the steering wheel with just your little pinky -- I hated those systems since you had no feel of the road.

This is again volvo getting it right, safety improved , driver accuracy improved, driver fatigue again improved, manoeuvring truck & trailer especially a lowloader with no rear stear and rigid axles can b a nightmare and this makes the hardest part of the job a little easier, reversing one of these babies is the last thing you master, going forward is easy, i.d love to chat with volvo designers and trailers, got a few ideas about this matter,
