I own an old 2004 V50 with a 170 hp 2.4l engine. The car has run 290k km and its body is rust-free. I agree to your statement, that the old Volvo 5-cylinder is really thursty! In Berlin-city-use it needs 12,5 l per 100 km (winter or summer does not make a remarkable difference) , on motorways with no more than 130 km/h - and several speed-limits inbetween - it still needed 8,2 l/ 100 km. But, as long as you change the oil and filter every 15.000 km and the timing belt including waterpump in the recommended period, these swedish 5-cylinder engines engines are nearly indestructable! A friend in Sweden has recently passed 580.000 km with his V70 II with the first engine - the same type as mine - , with all cylinders compressing within the allowed deviation and an oil consumption of 0,4l per 1000 km! Since the V50 was produced in the Ford-plant in Genk/Belgium, I am a little concerned about the rust protection, which was perfect on my two previous, swedish built V70 I`s. But time will tell! Overall, it is a fine little car with an excellent seating comfort (I have leather interior, since ALL(!) Volvo textile covers were rubbish and were cracked after at least 150.000 km on the drivers side in the times my V50 was built) and a still marvellous interior. No cracks in any interior plastic covers, no shrinked vinyl (like generally all the old, non-leather Volvo door covers). No ratteling parts or noises inside, and still perfectly presentable to anyone after all these years! The loading space leaves much to be desired: if a V70 is a shopping cart, the V50 is a shopping bag! I knew that when downsizing from V70 to V50, but also anyone else interested in buying a V50 should also consider this! The control buttons in the center console are much too small and fuzzy to push. Though the panel is spacy and wide enough to make the buttons more than three times as big ! Try yourself to hit the "Rear-Window-Heating-Button" on a bumpy road at night! ..........In this case, on the V50 "Function followed Form"°! Connectivity: Gladly none! No cell-phone through HiFi, and no "Big-Mama", that monitors your calls and your cars`s motions! In conclusion: even not comparable to a genuine, swedish-buit Volvo , and despite it´s many shortcomings, I simply enjoy to drive and own my little V50!

I own the unicorn. 2006 AWD 2.5 M66 6-spd manual. I LOVE my car. My friends bought it used for me 4 years ago. I highly recommend the 2.5. Not so much the smaller engine. So far, Ive replaced: CV axles Thermostat Thermostat Housing PCV Diaphragm Alternator Fuel Sensor Heater Core Lights Ignition Wiring Cabin Filter 2 Igniters Coolant Reservoir and Haldex AWD rear piston Did all myself except heater core and haldex reprogramming (only the dealer can do this) That's over the 4 years Brakes and Rotors coming up E-brake cable coming up New windshield soon too Need a spare key programmed All worth it. Ive spent around $5000 total over the span of 4 years keeping my car running great. Im always checking oil and changing it often (installed a fujimoto valve so i'll never need to worry about cross threading my oil case removing/reinstalling oil drain threaded plug!), keeping the fuel at over half full most the time, Only chevron fuel, Only oem parts, And over-clocking the engine every so often to let the turbo get some exercise. The 6 speed manual really ensures I'll be driving her into the 300,000s. She was assembled in the Belgium factory in 05. Got some electrical gremlins; specifically I only have brights. No standard lights. To be honest, i haven't gotten around to testing for the breach yet. If you can find one, and you fix your own vehicles, I suggest picking up my configuration of V50. Absolutely worth it.

I love my V50 and have no problems with it,2011 model.❤👍❤️ And have only gone 130000km. Change Thingstad under and still gåing strong. Thank you Volvo. Space it little but suite your body in comfort.👍❤️👍

I have a v2011 v50 drivE 1.6 diesel manual with 285k km. I have owned it for 3 months and put 9k km on it in that timeframe. Timing belt has been replaced twice. Gets phenomenal gas mileage, by hypermiling at 90km/h on the highway, it gets 3.5l/100km. No problems so far, I like it a lot. How long do you reckon it can last? UPDATE: 16 months and 31k km in, it's still going strong. Had to replace the rear shocks, a single injector that was shorting out during cold weather and the throttle valve (was broken when I got the car, the control cable to it also was charred). The throttle valve has to close for smooth engine shutdown as well as for optimal regeneration of the DPF. The injector and the throttle valve were broken when I got the car, insufficient due dilligence on my part. Passed inspection this summer and has been trouble free since then, besides an oil change.

You have the PSA engine, get rid of emission crapp such as EGR and particulate filter otherwise the engine will not last. Also replace the injector fire plate rings otherwise goo will start to form around the leaking injector and this will get into the oil and clogg the oil pick up in the sump.

@@thetruth7633 it still has to pass emissions testing, though... I've read that the dpf is pretty trouble free from the 2010 model year and on. Don't know about the egr.

I have a 2011 V50 with 1.6 Diesel. Bought It with 136000km, 3 months ago. Had some problems mainly due to the previous owner lack of care, but I find it very beautifull. Hopefully it will last some years.

Go for it, my first car was v50 1.6 2012 had some good incredible memories with it. Just keep the maintenance. I'm going to buy a V50 again but a D5 2.4

I have v50 got 250,000 on it engine still got plenty of power average mpg not bad .sadly when goes wrong not cheap nowadays because labour charges . And also new cars when work on them.not easy .have to remove lots stuff before actually get to what need to change . And also the specialist tools need for certain jobs better give it to garage £££

Superb car and the wagon still looks good in 2022, they do not rust. Just don't buy the diesel

@@Cloud007. 172k on a little 1.6d here and no issues either, maybe hes american? the diesels far outsold petrols (roughly of the 512k v50s built 2 thirds were diesel) and that was for good reason, only petrol worth having is T5 and but as far as i'm concerned (and having one as a second car would be great) but its then a brilliant sporty toy and not the real life do anything car that the v50 is so good at being in diesel form.

@@gimble8638 We didn't get a diesel in the U.S. 30mpg is still considered good for a wagon here, especially an older one. Diesel is also more expensive than gasoline here.

@@gahbah274 btw i'm also american, but it's irrelevant that diesel is more expensive than gasoline-petrol really. The massive gallons savings (half the amount usually, of diesel is used vs petrol! It's sad and mind boggling that diesel was never popular in small engines here given the massively long commutes we do, and given how many miles we put on cars every year, many ppl doing 250K miles in 7 years easily!

Have a 2.4 petrol. Average 8.8l/100km or 27mpg. Car has 235000km on clock. Timing belt was done at about 232k (first one in its life)

Yes agreed, a few ppl have said it's very small in the back. I've no idea what these ppl are talking about. I'm well over 6 foot and can easily fit in the back comfortably.

I have a 2005 V50 2.4. Air conditioning belt broke and got sucked under the timing belt cover and now all the valves are bent. I will never buy another car with a timing belt. Toyota all have timing chains. Pretty much lasts the entire life of the car. How can an expensive car like Volvo end up using a rubber timing belt on a double overhead cam interference engine. A deal breaker for me now. BUY TOYOTA!!

Having a timing chain doesn't mean trouble free! There are many engines with timing chains which also wreck engines - BMW 2.0d for example. Much cheaper to replace a belt rather than a chain.
