These diesel Volvos are fairly easy to service I find because most of the engine components except for the turbo and DPF are accessible from the top. Oil changes can be done without even needing to access the drain plug drain since you can extract trough the dipstick tube on these (well, if its old enough to still have one 😅)and get all of the oil out and when the EGR components and intake is due for a cleanout those parts are usually disassembled in 15 minutes. Ive never had a D5 engine with clean oil they are all pitch black inside I guess it is because of the EGR. That also clogs up the intake manifold horribly, really these Volvos need the EGR Valve, Throttle body and intake manifold cleaned out every 100.000 Miles or so.

Hi Jimmy, just as an addition, as its your car, i buy a cheap oil filter and a can of engine flush, fit the filter and add the flush, run the engine for 10 mins or so, then drain the oil, change the filter for a good one, (usualy Bosch) making sure the oil has drained compleatly, refill then fill with oil. Makes a lot of difference to the engine sound, probably by cleaning the cam followers etc, the first filter change ensures that any particles in the oil are collected

I do the same little flush with a bit of extra oil at the end as well. I purchased a car at the dealer that did a region on it, but I think they did the oil change first. considering that the dealer didn't seem very smart on diesels, I took the flush one step farther. add liquid Molly engine flush, drain the oil, refill the oil with some cheap oil, run it for a bit and drain that oil too. it flushes out all the carbon and the residual cleaning flush, then fill it up with the proper oil. yeah, it's a bit expensive but it's my car so it's worth it. by the way, the soot in the oil is why they make a special diesel engine oil that has soot encapsulation additives to prevent the soot from acting like grinding compound on your engine. those who use just regular gasoline oil are really missing out on longevity, and it's one of the reasons that some cars have timing chain failures.

on all 5 Cylinders there are a dipstick, on these its just hidden under the black intake pipe right at the top of the oil pan in the center of the engine

Volvo recomend 5.7 litres of oil in the sump. Any more and you risk an engine management light and oil level high warning if you get a failed regeneration which can put diesel into the sump. The electronic guage has to be reset if the oil is changed and will then take about 20miles of driving to give a reading from the sump sensor. There used to be a police spec conversion for these engines which allowed you to take the technicians dipstick ( the short yellow one on the engine sump joint) away and replace it with a full sized dip stick and tube, sealed at the bottom with an OS ring and fixed to the block with an MP bolt. Was about £50 when I bought mine, no idea what volvo charge now.

especially with old engines too much oil can potentially lead to a dangerous engine runaway.

Have put a dipstick on mine. Level does not correlate with onboard sensor. If you go over 75% on the dipstick you’ll get a warning light.

You replace the oil filter at the end, Why not change the oil filter before filling up the oil and running it, and then replace the filter again?

Youre not wrong, I change the oil on my s60 d5 every 2000 to 3000 miles but after less than 200 miles the oil is black at the fire back
