Volvo V70R Rescue Mission! Why was this Rare Swedish wagon DUMPED at auction?

Another project? You bet.
My name is Eric and I own and run a full service auto salvage business in the Saint Louis area called Importapart. I buy totaled and damaged cars across the country and break them down for parts. I also have a HUGE soft spot for unique and rare cars that somehow find their way to my driveway, This is one of those stories!
The 2004-2007 Volvo V70R Is a fairly sought after car with limited production numbers and in a niche that's nearly impossible to find today, a sports wagon. This 2005 V70R randomly caught my eye morning of the salvage auction and I threw a cheap bid on it as I know these will part out well. Somehow, I won this car on approval, and even crazier, they approved the amount. Including transport, I am into this car just over $1500 which would've fit my parts car margins just perfectly. Once it was shipped in, I spent a minute looking at it and instantly decided to try to get it running to see if the engine was good. If the engine was good, the car was worth saving to me. In this video, I go through the diagnosis and attempt to get this car running and driving, and then.... well you'll have to watch! Felt like Ivan ‪@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics‬ with a lot more rudimentary equipment(And a lot less patience)
This video is kind of a roller coaster but I still feel like I came out ahead on such a rare car.
I really hope you found this video enjoyable and as always, I love all of the comments, feedback and even the criticism.
Catch you all on the next teardown!
-Eric

Thx for saving it! The 5-speed aisin automatic was really not strong enough for the engine so they restricted the torque on the lower gears... That´s why the 6-speed manual is like 5.9s 0-100km/h and the automatic is around 7.2s if I remember correctly... I was at sales in Torslanda in Gothenburg when it was just released and the showcar was flashgreen with the orange/brown Atacama leather interior and an automatic. The salesman said that if you just want performance you could just buy the much cheaper T5 instead of the automatic R. The 6-speed manual is another story... ;) Volvo didn´t get a 6-speed aisin automatic coping with much more torque until late 2006.

If it has the 6 speed Aisin auto, that one also has some problems that were supposed to be fixed in 2008. Its the same transmission in the XC90 (I have a 2008 V8 XC90)and I get flared and/or hard shifts between 2-3rd and 4-5th. Boils down to a poor design which cause some valves to wear badly. They get stuck, then through pressure they pop into gear. Only happens when its warm.

As someone who has had a Volvo's dashboard apart, I *cackled* when you said it should be an easy swap. I was so tempted to just give the car away to anyone who would take it off my hands, just so I didn't have to put it back together. I eventually did get it reassembled, but never again.

Currently I own a Mark 2 2006 C70 with the D5 engine in a rare colour and with pretty much all the bells and whistles, unfortunately Volvo didn't do a R specific version of the C70 there top of the range one was a T5 but in diesel form it was the D5. So I love watching Volvo content and taking tips on how i plan to make a home made R version C70. So watch this space as I plan on documenting my progress.

I actually had this same RPM problem with my 2001 S60, I thought it was the transmission for awhile but it turned out to be the electronic throttle module. When the internal parts of that fails it mimics a slipping transmission. Volvo I believe had to recall alot of older vehicles because their ETM's were so bad. Hope this helps, great video.

Volvo made this car for European police forces. That's it. That was the reason they made them. It was perfect to carry a lot of lane closed stuff, or canines, plus room for perps. It was made to be modded for all the electronics, computers, comms, radar, ANPR, light bars. High speed chases? You bet. Ram baddies of the road? You bet. A lot of them got scrapped before the cops were finished with them. Over here, finding a good one that has not been hammered is really hard, but the scrap yards all over Europe have a lot of salvage parts for them.

Not quite. I had an ex-police V70. The police ones were T5 not the R. The ones the police had came from a separate production line and were known as the "police / taxi chassis". Seam welded rather than spot welded, factory installed wiring loom for ANPR / radio / lights etc, and Volvo single pot brake calipers on the front that were SIGNIFICANTLY more capable than the Brembo 4-pots that the R and civilian T5 got. The police / taxi chassis also got velor cloth interior and poverty spec bumpers and side skirts, with regular AC controls rather than full climate control. On the brakes - I once parked at a motorway services (rest stop in the US?) and when I got back to the car, there was a modern Porsche 911 (don't remember what exact model) parked close by. The 911 front brake calipers and disks looked to be about the same size.

The good news is regarding the transmission is that it's all valve body issues, look up the AW TF80SC shift kits available. Have done half a dozen similar ones for the AW55. It can be done in car, but for your you may need to drop the subframe a little for clearance. I normally just lift the engine up a little bit but the TF80SC takes up a bit more space.

My first job after high school was at a parts store that had a shop in the back. One day, a guy came in and said he walked from the Tractor Supply down the street to let us know he was having his car towed to us because it wouldn't start. I asked him if he was sure it had gas in it, and he got pretty angry. I reassured him that I knew it was a dumb question, but that we'd actually seen it a few times. I suggested that since the Tractor Supply it was sitting at had full service gas pumps, to put a couple gallons in to make sure that wasn't the problem. He finally admitted that wasn't a bad idea, and left. I never saw him again. 😆

It does have a lot of R cosmetic upgrades such as the dials and the front bumper - it's a shame that is missing as they are expensive and rare now. There are so very bad modifications on the poor car and those bonnet vents are just dreadful and definitely NOT OEM. The two piece rotors are also not standard . Great video fella. Those seats are definitely not the originals and you were correct that they should be the Nordkap Blue. Those gauges look tragic and the dash top can easily be swapped over. I have the leather R one on mine to replace the plastic one. Also the buzzing noise was possibly the ballast for the Xenons. I laughed out loud when she fired into life. Fingers crossed it doesn't get out of hand. Many years ago my little brother had a thing for buying v70s that were in the like 1-1.5 k range in asking price. They were that cheap because the sellers always had never replaced anything it didn't absolutely require to move, so they all had wonky transmissions, leaky worn out turbos, broken charge air piping, non functioning pcv systems, you name it. Eventually he caught on, that the most expensive car you can buy, is one that started expensive, but is now cheap. Good on ya for never letting an interesting car go to waste though.

The 2.5 these came with have a super thin cylinder to cylinder wall which crack really easily at the top of the cylinder esp if its pushing a lot of power. There are shims that can be installed if its not already cracked. If it is cracked, the volvo "2.5T' cars share the same engine minus the rods and pistons which can be swapped over.

Love it... but I guess now we check oil AND gas before cranking?? So glad you are not going to part it out. I want to see this V70R when you've finished it. This is going to be a good project to watch

My dad has had one of these from brand new! He did european delivery, one of the coolest things he said he's ever done! It now has 160k on it and has had to have a lot of work lately. These engines have a terminal issue with a few of the cylinders getting cracks in them and it requires boring them out and installing liners. The other main issue is the angle gear by the transfer case which need replacing eventually, but some preventative maintenance can help prolong the life. He's had the transmission replaced but he had a used motor put in and the same thing happened to the used motor - cracked bores. Sounds like he's going to get the liners done because he loves the car, it's really comfortable and really quick. Makes for the perfect road trip car.

Tell him to get a block guard. Helps a lot on keeping that motor healthy.

The hood is same for s60, regular v70 and xc70. Fenders are same for s60 and v70 (although there might be different bumper mounts and if they are from 2007 then they might have a cover instead of the turn signal but everything is interchangeable). The AUM code is for the aftermarket headunit

Sometime you get a real gem that's a bit scruffy on the outside, but need a bit of TLC to get going... and which's really worth the money spent on it. We were in the market for a small 4x4 vehicle. Found a Daihatsu Terios for a good price, but its left front panel paintjob differ from the rest of the car (it was in a fender bender), front windscreen had a crack, both lower control arms needed replacement and the rear shocks too. We bought it. Already a new windscreen in, new control arms and we're saving up for the rear shocks. And new tyres. Drives like a champ, and can tackle rough terrain without breaking stride. Totally worth it. But you gotta jump quickly, else it'll be gone forever.

Low key really want one... Take the engine out, rebuild/bulletproof, get a really responsible turbo setup, aim for peak ~400whp curve as consistent as possible, do everything right.

I own a 2010 SRT8 Challenger, I bought it brand new off the lot. I just needed to buy a new battery last summer. The factory battery worked fantastically for almost 13 years. That's the only battery that's ever lasted me 13 years. Granted the car has just under 3000 miles on it and is stored inside all year round. But the battery was still 13 years old before I started having problems with it.

Those transmissions are notorious for 2nd and 3rd gear issues, a flush of the fluid will help temporarily but it's already on its way out. Great cars, great engines, flawed transmissions

I had an 03 V70 T5 what a car. Let down by poor gearbox maintenance in its past. Change that fluid regularly and it'll last forever. 👍
