Volvo V70R UPDATE... Does The Computer Work? Bad Turbo?!

The Volvo is back in the spotlight! But this time, I've actually put some miles on it.
And speaking of spotlight(s)... The studio is getting a lighting upgrade as well!
The 2005 Volvo V70R spaceball manual has been a reliable car as of late... But there are still some things wrong with it. First of all, it has a litany of warnings when you first turn it on. Next, it still smokes after a hard pull. But, the CEM is working now thanks to ‪@XemodexInc‬ so now I can actually read the codes using my DiCE / ViDA computer. While we are at it, we also perform a new glove test to see if the PCV job was successful!
A lot happens in this one!
Thanks for watching!

I really appreciate the videos about the V70R. The fact the you're reviving an abandoned car, a manual V70R of all things, and bringing it back on the road is quite something. Sorting out electronic gremlins and a turbo system aren't the easiest of things. Let's hope you get it sorted in the end!

The steering angle sensor is a common issue on these. The BCM/ABS is a somewhat common issue, the soldering can crack and you get all kinds of errors. You can re-solder it yourself, but you should start with replacing the steering angle sensor, if that doesn’t work or you don’t have any communication with the BCM, replace or re-solder it.

Yes, ABS functionality requires input from SAS, so faulty sensor is potential safety issue. He needs to research his codes more..

Elliott, worn valve stem seals could be the cause of the puff of oil smoke on deceleration.

Agree. If that is the turbo it would smoke all time. Yours is only on the throttle release. So that points to the worn valve seals.

In ViDa you can also use 0. Thats the admin login. 2 is the regional login for the USA. I use 4 for Europe. Saved faultcodes don't go away after fixing. You have to reset them. So the way to go is to remove al codes. Go for a drive and read again and see what comes back.

For Dad Alvis - Speaking as a 69 year old retired professional photographer, please, no more pink and blue lights. I recommend these flexible LED panels that you can get in various sizes and shapes. They are great to make a compact travel kit too. A large mic stand bag could probably hold 2-3 lights with stands. If you want to go cheap for something to light a large area I've used a shop light and a clothes rack on wheels that I've clamped a translucent white shower curtain or bedsheet on. Move the light back far enough so it covers the curtain/sheet from edge to edge without spilling around the sides. The shower curtain is easier to keep clean. Later I bought some pro grade framed panels from the German company, Sunbounce, but now I really like these flexible LED light panels available under many companies. You can use a frame, tape them to walls if you're in a small area. I also liked to light a room used for interviews using a lantern/globe diffuser. It would fill the room with a nice diffused light and I could bring in other small lights to illuminate the people. Why I liked to use this setup was the diffused light would fill in shadows, but it wasn't great to make colors pop, like for a clothing catalog. So I'd add in some smaller lights with gridded reflectors to add contrast and color pop.

Hi Elliott. Follows you and your Volvo V70R from Trondheim Norway. Here in Scandinavia there are lots of Volvos. I even have a V70 T5 m56 with light upgrades. If you are going to autocross, the car will be much better with some upgrades. Anti-Sway Bar Kit - V70R Models, HD sub frame Bushing (4x 8678497), Lowering spring (TME, Eibach or IPD),IPD rear Camber Bushing, all UltraRacing Braces. For a turbo overhaul use a Turbo Billet "Super Hybrid" K24 Compressor Wheel, Volvo S60R/V70R. This requires good software! And finally down pipe w / race cat and a Cat back exhaust. TME has the best, but there are cheaper alternatives. Good luck, looking forward to the next episodes.

I understand the pain, concerning the turbo. However, it doesn’t just accelerate the car. The insane amount of heat, coupled with 60-100K RPM, accelerates it’s own aging process. I just think of them, as an expensive pump; not much more costly, than some fuel pumps. Have really appreciated this story. I recently started looking for an 850 or v70 and I find your vids, and a few others, really helpful.

Hi Elliot. Really enjoying the content on the SpaceBall. Depending on what the specialists say about your BCM there is something else you could try. I have an 850 wagon and I had the ABS issue. The part looks very similar. The module is "sealed"(glued), but with a bit of careful prying, heating with a heat gun and cutting one can get it open(the board is very close to the edge so be careful). To remove the actual unit is usually the case of removing the plug and 4 tiny bolts - it will then slide off the ABS solenoid housing. Once you get inside you will probably find that the plug 'soldered legs' have cracked the solder joints to the board. You may have to carefully remove some silicone protection off the board before you can get to them. Some flux, solder and a soldering iron should get that part sorted. Then reseal the box with some high temp silicone sealant and reinstall. Saved me a bundle.

The Wizard was just talking about a Subaru that had a bunch of systems that would not work, including the air conditioning, all to get you to have an emissions item repaired. I don't know if I described that correctly, but I thought of your Volvo not letting a bunch of stuff work because of something unrelated that needs servicing.

Gpopshop sells a rebuild kit for the K24 turbo for less that 60 bucks, and a high performance kit for 175. As long as you don't have damage to it, you can rebuild it yourself. Or you can send it to them and they'll do it and can balance it. I've done them before making sure to be extremely careful taking it apart and indexing the compressor to the turbine shaft. One other thing that happens to these K24s is the turbine housing cracks, it shouldn't affect it. Glad you're getting some quality miles in it. 👍

Not just the Volvo, but all modern cars are electrical nightmares! Don’t forget this tech and car design was around 20 years ago and I really dread to think what modern cars will be like in 5 years with less quality and far more complication than the Volvo! All this tech filtering down to cheaper cars too mean cost cutting. Lovely to see you persevering with this old girl - at her mileage too she is barely run in! I know friends with P2s with over 200/250k and are daily drivers. A new turbo and all these jobs will give an easy another 100k on a P2 so you aren’t throwing any money away dude!

Glad you got vida going. In the unselected section, the drop down box for each error you can get more info and tests (by clicking the image that looks like a square saying like bc2000) You can clear the srs with vida, if you angle sensor is bad you won't get steering wheel controls I believe. The module an be replaced with a good working one as long as you get the right one for the car, assuming DTSC and not stc, you can get the part numbers from vida. Have you done a compression test, I can't remember. I was burning oil due to two broken pistons and you've donenthe block mod? Vida will tell you how to fix the issue and shows you pictures of the item. There is a vida Facebook group who will be able to help you. the airbag module, Ed of Vinwiki is having the same issue trying to pass tech with his ALSO flooded car, one of the commenters said its the seat foam and the sensor in the seat doing it, like when the foam gets wet it causes that failure light to come on from the foam deteriorating as the car cant tell if someones in the seat or not. and its apparently happened in some cars just from sitting in the car with a wet backside from going to the beach of all things

I had the same BCM faults in my '04 S60 R and replacing the brake pedal position sensor fixed it. It was an $85 part from FCP Euro that took all of 10 minutes to install. These P2 R cars seem to love throwing out handfuls of codes for singular sensor problems. Basically when one system goes blind, the whole car panics. If that doesn't help at all, I guess I owe you $80. Good luck!

Elliot, you can clear the time for regular service light with an ignition setting trick. The warning itself comes on periodically but it is not actually a fault code and more of a suggestion for forgetful people.

I fixed my V70R CHASSIS SETTINGS SERVICE REQUIRED meaasge using VIDA to ID the failing component (in my case the acceleration sensor on front left shock) S/h replacements surprisingly hard to come by, at least here in the UIK, had to get one from a Japanese seller on ebay. Worked a treat, though - good luck!

I have a VW Passat B6 with a 2.0 turbo. It uses a lot of oil as well. It's had the turbo replaced and the PCV valve several times. The only time it didn't burn a lot of oil is when I bypassed the PCV with a block off kit. But I got nervous about doing that. To be honest I am not that knowledgable in how the system works so I put the PCV back and it uses a lot of oil again.

Just did my steering angle sensor on my L322 Range Rover. £500 well spent, all warning ⚠️ lights went out. A win.
