I have this car now for about 2/3 weeks. My consumption on the highway is around 25 atm (at 105 acc) in NL ( I think we have 8-10 degrees, wet as well) with airco on. So not sure why yours is > 30. I do agree its thirsty :) ! especially if you don't heat it up before you go (your software version is outdated, you didn't have that option yet I noticed) I really think the car was released to quick like the P2 - but I'm hoping with some software updates we can : 1. warm up the battery better, (no coldgate) and 2. hopefully throttle a bit later at fast charge (now at 45% I think, Im hoping 55/60 %) and perhaps get some range extension (but this is dreaming) on a side note - i love how it drives ! the speed is amazing and the way it handles is really good.

They seem to have much more polished offerings. They are suppose to launch in Norway in January with the Tang and Han. CATL and BYD are the biggest producers of LFP batteries. Which require no rare materials, but seem to lack TMS due to being less energy dense.

Tesla-Bjørn always tells us how bad the Leaf is. But on my Leaf 62 kWh, I stuggle to get the average consumption above 200 Wh/km even below freezing and snow/rain at 120 km/h. I have seen average go up to 220, but it usually drops to around 200 when I get to my destination. That is for 150 km driving on motorway. Will test when it gets really cold, if it happens. But the consuption on this XC40 was totally nuts.
@CreRay
@CreRay 3 жыл бұрын
I might be the only one but- I really like this color👌 Might be a good idea to bring out an economy oriented version of this model. 150kW is enough, no AWD, probably the battery size can be decreased big time (and so the weight and price also) with equal range. Even better, bring out a non-SUV version, like a hatchback. That I would buy!
@krisany3670

Great video as always! I just didn't like the end note that it's significantly more expensive than diesel. Sure, on long trips while hammering it's true but that's not really representative of how people drive. A comment clarifying that's not true for everyday driving is important I think, especially on this video that will probably be seen by many non EV-converts.
@krisany3670
@krisany3670 3 жыл бұрын
Indeed just scrolling comments I see several ppl giving up on electric XC40 and sticking with diesel based off of that comment. Would be amazing if you could do some fuel economy test for EV charging costs for avg driving patterns. I'm sure there must be stats available for how much of car mileage is everyday driving vs road trip so you can get a realistic baseline for home charge percentage vs fast charging. With such a test I'm sure even xc40 consumes less money than diesel.
@bjornnyland
@bjornnyland 3 жыл бұрын
The calculation I mentioned in the video was in fact incorrect. It turns out that this car costs 1.35 NOK/km when hammering like this. And even if you start with a full battery from cheap home charging, you can only get around 200 km before you have to charge. So the average price/km will be approx for a 500 km trip: 200 km * 340 Wh/km * 1 NOK/kWh = 68 NOK 300 km * 340 Wh/km * 4 NOK/kWh = 408 NOK (68+408) NOK / 500 km = 0,95 NOK/kWh An equivalent diesel XC40 should cost about the same.
@themeach011
@themeach011 3 жыл бұрын
The video is 1000 km challenge so all cars are driven similarly and under similar conditions so that it can be compared in a somewhat fair manner. Not all vehicles perform well at this test. Your points on commuting are totally fair and accurate but not the point of the video. Anyone that's considering an ev for road trips needs to know this stuff. Bjorn does lots of other tests that are more pertinent to commuters. The only thing worse for the ev transition than bad mouthing efficiency would be for people to buy the wrong ev for their needs and be disappointed in their purchase.
@krisany3670
@krisany3670 3 жыл бұрын
@@bjornnyland Thanks for clarifying! Also, just in case I wasn't clear, the test I would love (not really connected to this video) would be table for total fuel economy for average car usage. Over time, how many kWh at home vs fast charge and compare that total for all EVs to a diesel. In such a comparison I expect something like like 80% is usually home charging, no?

Björn, why there are so some Audi E-Trons now in Norway? Norwegians don't like Tesla anymore?
@bjornnyland
@bjornnyland 3 жыл бұрын
Norwegians are brand loyal. And many VW fossil owners switched to e-tron in 2020. Tesla sold over 7000 cars in 2020 and was right behind VW and Audi. In December 2020, 4232 Model 3 was delivered in Norway. No 2 on the list was ID3 with "only" 2304 cars. And e-tron was on 8th place with only 488 cars. Does it mean that Norwegians don't like e-tron by the end of 2020? ;) elbilstatistikk.no/

I don’t see all the points on this range test. Also didn’t mention the build quality of this car. Anyway 20 years ago we used the Nokia 3210 mobile phone, with an battery average range of a week. Now we all use iPhone with a battery range if you are lucky of one day. And no one is complainig about it, because you can charge nearly everywhere your devices. Soon will happen for cars too. The fact is that average km daily usage per driver is 30/40 km ( home- hoffice - hoffice - home ) + maybe a week end trip once a month? . If we charge the car at home and office every day, the battery range is more than enough and is not a problem at all. And how many time in life we drive for 1000km trip? In my life never. Because if i Have to cover such a long distance is better choose a fast train or a plane which is way faster and cheaper than go by car. The only problem i see at the moment for the phev veicle is the charging network and the cost Because is way more expensive than a normal combustion engine, and is not for all pocket. Imho😉

Why fast charging is so expensive in Norway that in a thirsty car like this Volvo costs 1.1 Norwegian Krone per km? I did the math Bjorn style for myself driving here in Minnesota a Toyota Prius HEV 2005 having consumption 37 miles per gallon in the very cold winter with the cost of fuel 1.8 $ per gallon: 1.8$/37 miles/1.6km per mile/1.2 Euro per $*10 Krone per Euro=0.25 Krone per km. No wonder here with huge petroleum subsidies electrification is so slow. At least at home charging in Norway is so cheap as Bjorn said it can even beat the price of gasoline in the USA using any thirsty EV like Etron or this Volvo. There is a video on TFL KZbin channel comparing a trip cost in Colorado mountains with Tesla Model 3 vs Toyota Prius both AWD. Thanks to Tesla contracts to local electric grid companies the cost of Supercharging was just several cents more than buying fuel for that Prius. Granted Tesla is a sports car vs a fuel sipper. However this is a huge merit of Tesla in subsidized petroleum world to reach cost parity in Supercharging. By contrast Electrify America network which is founded by VW the way Ionity is in Europe is very expensive to be used on long trips. The bright side of the story - home charging in the USA is always cheaper than using of fossil fuel.

Fast charging in Norway is in fact way cheaper than most countries.
@themeach011
@themeach011 3 жыл бұрын
Gas prices in the states are ridiculously cheap. In Canada we are paying over $4 a gallon which even after the exchange is more than double what you guys pay there and gas is considered cheap here now and the province we live in has much lower fuel costs than some of the other provinces. I just got my model Y last week and even supercharging the cost per km is significantly less than a gas equivalent. At least where I live
@nevco8774
@nevco8774 3 жыл бұрын
@@bjornnyland That is true. The question is why Norway chose not to subsidize fast charging to explode growth of EV adoption? They do subsidize already buying EVs, parking in cities, free tunnels, free SLOW AC charging in the cities, free use of bus lanes, cheaper ferries. Is it considered fast charging a luxury in Norway? In that case Norway should at least subsidize old 50 kw chargers to be cheap and everywhere and let faster newer chargers be more expensive. The issue is China and some other European countries look at Norway to learn how to achieve their own electrification success. And who knows, maybe California and Quebec are keeping an eye on Norway success as well.
@nevco8774
@nevco8774 3 жыл бұрын
@@themeach011 Tesla Supercharger network is pricewise competitive with gasoline in both Canada and the USA. That is the Tesla's merit contracting power utilities. On the contrary, the CCS networks tend to be pricy. Especially expensive is Electrify America. Unless there is a united effort on CCS counterpart to keep price of fast charging under control the EV adoption here in North America will go only for Tesla for long distance travellers and only unexpensive small EVs for urban commuters. Most expensive non Tesla EVs like Audi Etron or Jaguar iPace will face slow sales. That is why VW ID4 provides free 3 years unlimited Electrify America usage.
