Volvo XC40 Plug-in Hybrid: Faultless PHEV

Volvo's future is electric. Going forward, the only decision buyers of the brand will really have to make is whether they want to plug their cars in or not. Those who want to attach to the mains will be opting for one of the company's range of 'Recharge' models - either a plug-in hybrid of a full-electric variant. The XC40 Recharge T5 Plug-in hybrid was the first Recharge model to be launched and you can't fault the engineering here - or the way that it's been incorporated into such a pleasing, practical and stylish overall design. If you want a compact, premium-badged SUV with plug-in tech, this is where it's at right now.

To my view PHEV's miss the obvious unique selling point - if they all had a better all electric range of real world miles of 50+ miles they would all be a lot more desirable!

Hi Martin ! I kinda understand what you mean. A lot of people will just jump from HEV strait to BEV. For to and fro from work everyday you will be ok on ev. And longer trip you will go from BEV to HEV.

You would just get a EV in that case. Where would you put the extra batteries? There will be compromises with weight and space if it was so

Wrong! all vehicles will NOT eventually be electrified. Battery operated cars are extremely inefficient as compared to ICE engines. The car makers are mostly outsourcing EV's to other car makers and working on new technology on their ICE engines, like Hydrogen or some other tech that is efficient. Notice when car makers now present EV's as environmentally friendly, they have some fine print and even only describe it as "zero tail pipe emissions". that's because the emissions to drive recharging stations and battery chemical development is not a green energy.... Doesn't stop me from looking at a PHEV due to the tax rebates but let's not think we are saving the planet by buying a car this is recharged by coal fired plant....

There's a big chance you'll actually get an Belgian/German/Swedish one in Europe. Nothing chinese in your car.
