I recently had a XC40 PHEV on loan for a 2 day test-drive and one thing that isn't pointed out in this video is that the Engine Fan is ON for most of the time when the batteries are charging via the AC outlet. This is quite annoying because they're pretty loud! The BMW X1 25e PHEV on the other hand is super silent when charging overnight.

In german car magazines the XC40 always finishes last compared with it's german counterparts but everybody knows this is bs. The Volvo XC40 is the best SUV in that segment. Not just because it looks the best but because it feels like a real SUV and has plenty of space.

I don't know. If you look for roadworthiness and the most refinement, it's the German cars usually. If you look for a great town car and livability plus good refinement, the Volvo should rate high. If you look for off-road, Jeep and Subaru should do best.

I was looking forward to this review. Best car review channel in my opinion. Thanks A PHEV makes perfect sense for commuting and frequent short trips and car can be charged every night at home. More and more company parkings also offer charging, that means 80km commute each day without turning on the petrol engine, and a (PH)EV is unbeatable in “stop & go” traffic jam.

I’m taking delivery of my new fully optioned T5 Inscription tomorrow. I have been driving the S60 for more than a year now so I don’t get the complaint of some commenters on other vlogs about the touchscreen cluster on these cars (XC60, XC90, V60) being too fiddly when driving. I mean, if you have the driver assist on along with the adaptive cruise control, you can actually (though I don’t recommend it) take your eye off the road and your hands off the steering wheel for at least 10 seconds and the car will almost drive itself. What I mean is, the car will keep its speed, distance from other vehicles around, and keep you centered in your own lane without you doing anything in that amount of time which would be time enough for most people to find what they’re looking for. And then there’s also the voice command.

Here's an interior feature I would like to see Volvo add to the xc40. You are driving the light colored seat model and if you notice, the doors have the light color, the bottom of the dash as well. That's the only color where there is a contrast to the dark color used on the other surfaces. If you get any other color seat, the door and bottom of the dash is black. I think that makes for a too dark appearance. There is the R Design option of the orange color and that's striking. But only that one and the white offer any color on the door and below the dash. The car has expensive option packages. But Momentum has the cloth seats, the Inscription does not and the R Design has some leather with the cloth. I do like this vehicle even though I don't really care for SUVs. I think it is the storage areas that makes it work along with a sense of style.

I love it! the only thing I don’t like are the HVAC controls-they shouldn’t be buried in a secondary menu. I am constantly changing the fan speed for comfort & to reduce noise. I definitely prefer the matte surfaces-I live in sunny Arizona and the glare off of shiny surfaces gets annoying on long drives. Volvo is doing some of the best interiors in the industry right now. I really love the gauge graphics with the floating range that helps you drive without needing the petrol engine as much. How does it drive when the battery is completely dead?

One thing that’s confusing with these hybrid cars is the overall *combined* autonomy on a full electric charge/full petrol tank. I.e. my normal car will do like 650km on a full petrol tank. What’s the honest figures for these hybrids ? Manufacturers never mention this directly 🤷🏻‍♂️

Stop talking so much Thomas! Those old people are racing past you! (1.52). Overall, Volvo has really knocked it out of the park with their designs. Gorgeous. The seats say "just look how we don't need leather to look high end". I'm not too sure about that white roof but I see how it accentuates the finish of the window design lines at the back. I think I'd prefer black roof. (I see you in the driver's side mirror camera brother! 8.50. Also, maybe you guys can put some matte black paper tape on the white camera to make it less obvious? Little movie tip) Funny how Volvo can make a PHEV & maintain truck space while the new BMW X3 30e has a big "step up" in the trunk. Anyways, great review. Beautiful country side!

Hi Thomas, really good review and nice scenery for this car to drive. I like the design of both exterior and interior, practical and peaceful. An SUV always should be like that, peaceful and reserved. I don't understand these massive vehicles on steroids (e.g. BMW X5M) thundering down the road. I have a quick question : When having lane assistance on, and you see a hole (size of wheel could fit in) in the road (highway) which is really not uncommon in Belgium because of all the international trucks passing through , and you want to swerve around it, does it allow you to or does it intervene at first? Consider you just need to cross the white line a fraction for evading it. Sometimes too much safety integration in a car can make it unsafe in certain situations and the best safety on the road is defensive driving and alertness.

The system disables when you take over/turn the steering wheel. So you can perfectly avoid the pothole. There is no hesitation or resistance. I use it all the time on Belgian roads on a 2019 V60, basically the same system as in the XC40.

On the lower trim, yes. On the higher trims, they're starting to with the XC90, offering wool seats. However, leather is standard on higher trims. Volvo has to work harder but part of it is the market they're in.

Great Review - as usual! Like the good ride, and the bright interior. But UK configurator doesn't seem to allow PHEV with Momentum, so those pale fabric seats and a PHEV does not equate. Shame no HUD. From a PHEV, I would need a much longer EV-mode range than approx 15 miles; and I like to be in electric when I select electric. Very scenic drive. Interesting finding about B-mode versus manual gears! At 36:55, I thought dashcams were illegal in Austria; is Germany changing also? Shame hybrids are so much more expensive, the UK XC40 PHEV is £47k. Greetings to Katharina.

That car is already sold out for the current model year 2020. For MY2021 there will be no Momentum trim level anymore - just Inscription and R-Design.

You get more than 15 miles as this XC40 has almost the same battery as in the 2019 V60T8, that has a 10,4kWh one. Even when it's super cold you get more than 30km. On the coldest day I get 33km. Normally in winter it is mostly 38km and in summer 45km when using the pure drive setting and 42km in hybrid. I have this car for 10.000km so far and average fuel usage is 3.3l/100km. If you drive normally you always stay in electric, even in hybrid. You really don't need to drive slowly. If the car would have two electric motors, it would make sense to stay in electric but the one motor is not powerful enough to get you out of tricky situation when needed, so it's actually a good thing how it is now imho.

Thomas, the system on the dashboard isn't really complex as you state. I personally find it very easy to understand what is going on between riding electric or using the ICE. It's easy to understand what you need to do and it becomes second nature in no time. What you claim on the 'B' stand is also very much dependent on how 'warm' the battery is. When the battery 🔋is cold there is indeed no difference between driving in 'D' mode and 'B' mode. But when the battery is warm and has room for regen you really can drive without using the brakes. It's indeed not like 'one pedal' driving as it's not that strong to come to a stop quickly. You need to be predictive on when to release the gas pedal. Things you learn as you drive more. When you get really good at it, it's perfectly normal to get 2.5kWh back with regen. Not bad on 10.4kWh battery. Plus the software is intelligent when you use navigation as it divides the range of the battery over the distance you need to drive. When it’s not possible to charge at your location you can use 'waypoints'. This way you also get battery left on the return trip. This is very important to get fuel usage down. This should be front and center in the manual but it's not and that not smart on Volvo's part.

There is one issue for me and that is no option for controlling screen with button. I am not fan of touch screen phones, the more annoyed me this weird bad habit getting it to cars. Prefer absolutely buttons, its much practical! Otherwise Volvo is the winner not only on SUV ground, my sedan choice is from Volvo range S60 is pure well shaped gem, flawless car visually

I would prefer a hybrid car with a fully electric drivetrain and a battery that gives a fully electric range of 150 to 200 km. That should be combined with an fuel powered powerplant (combustion engine plus generator) that can give electricity for another 500 km of range. That would always give you the instantaneous electric power of a pure electric car combined with the range of a fuel powered car. And of course for most journeys it would be pure electric since most trips are shorter than 150 to 200 km. About this Volvo: It is a very nice interior. But it is a shame that you can not chose fabric seats combined with the top trim levels. I haven't tried to configure an XC40 but I have tried configure the S60. The fabric seats can only be combined with the 190 hp engine. If you want a stronger engine you have to chose leather seats. I honestly think that is stupid! For me the reasons to prefer fabric is not so much animal rights but other things: Leather is cold when cold, hot when hot, slippery and does not breath. Fabric is better in all these aspects. Another problem with the configuration is that there is a lot of combinations that are not allowed. Some interior colours can not be combined with some exterior colours. Some seat colours can only be combined with the dark ceiling, not the light one. Why do they limit the possible choices like that? Isn't every car built after a customer spec? Then they shall allow any possible combination that a customer may want to order.

Volvo makes really good high quality cars. The only thing stopping me from getting a Volvo is the engines. A 4 cylinder across the line up is simply not good enough especially in the S90, S60, XC60 and XC90. But besides that, where build and material quality is concerned, they are ahead of Mercedes. Actually most are ahead of Mercedes these days. Mercedes has lost its way. Their new cars have poor materials and do not feel solid like they used to. They rattle and creak and squeak. That's all my E class does, is rattles, squeaks and creaks over even small bumps.

Big fail on the instrument panel: (1) no standard tachometer; (2) absurd to have a digital speed located inside a speedometer ring (redundancy that could be better used showing other data/information); (3) no engine temperature gauge; (4) as you note, that "power" gauge showing electric vs. ICE usage is absurdly complicated and not very useful (better to have a standard tach and have a separate gauge for electric-power usage/regen/charging, as in the Porsche PHEVs)

If you chose the sports or dynamic mode, the tachometer will display with red background. I agree, it would have been better if the xc40 had engine temperature gauge like other cars. Not sure why Volvo did not incorporated it; not sure I have seen it in other recent Volvo models. May be Thomas might know...

The dashboard looks like it from the 80's. The display with fans on the sides is not practical, I prefer a display raised like a tablet. Volvo are beautiful cars, but I don't like their interior.
