Wow, this video was almost entirely just trash talking. I own a 2011 Volvo XC90 - you can see the tail light in my profile pic -, and it is one of the best cars I've ever driven. The second row is very comfortable, especially for me and my family since we are 6'5 and taller. I've taken the car with me to college - it was my first car - and the front seats are amazing for road trips, which Volvo seats are also known for. The pop up GPS from the dash is actually very cool, and the new Audi Q7 uses it, so I don't know why he's calling it dated. The buttons on the rear of the steering wheel for the Nav menu are very easy to use, not hard at all. It's only 4 arrow buttons and a select and back button. Not hard AT ALL. The performance is pretty bad I will admit, but if you live in a place with terrible weather, like me I'm in Alaska, you come to love the AWD and driving dynamics. It's also extremely safe, the design has actually aged fairly well; I mean the design came out in 2002 and was taken away in 2014, and it still looked fairly good. Body roll is not bad, especially when you realize I came from driving my mom's Yukon Denali and my dads BMW 3 Series, so I know bad body roll and amazing corner abilities respectively, so take my word for it. If you want to talk about bad body roll, look at my brother's Toyota FJ Cruiser or my sister's Infiniti QX80. The XC90 is a comfortable, quality, and amazing SUV that people should take a look at. Maintenance is costly as he mentioned, I would know, since Reliability on XC90s are below average and boy do I know it for a fact... but if you buy a CPO Volvo XC90, you get 7 year/100,000 mile warranty past new car purchase date, which makes it worth it, especially when you consider that buying a Volvo new is a horrible financial decision as they depreciate horribly; again, take my word for it D:.

Don’t think any of your negative comments will affect the way that Volvo owners feel about their vehicles. They are some of the most reliable vehicles on the road. What was the purpose of this vide?

Im still driving my 2005 XC90 2.5T with 235,000K on it now. I'd actually say its pretty quick with its 5 cylinder turbo. Still drives nice and smooth. Id agree that the technology is a little old but hey, it's 12 years old. Looking forward to the new XC40 and XC60. I'll Probably pick up a used one in a few years when this hits 300,000 on the odometer

Reasons to still buy an XC90--(1) Still winning safety awards after 10 years (2) Great cargo space (3) 3rd row seating (4) great flexibility in the cargo-passenger configuration (5) drives great--much much better than this review allows for (6) Safety (7) family friendly (8) Did I say safety? And don't buy any car navigation system--They're all rip-offs. Volvo is now recommending a $150 Garmin for the XC90 that goes on the post to the left of the driver--better than a $1500+ system.

"The XC90 is restrained, handsome, & VERY WELL done in almost every way. The concepts of muted tone, nice feel to materials, exquisite and somewhat expensive body panel design, and that rather plain "Bauhaus" feel were well known in Scandinavian Design circles. If you want glitz, there are plenty of choices, but handsome restrained QUALITY only comes around once in a while and Volvo hit it out of the park with the XC90. Even ten years later they still look good, and they are now iconic."--Mr P

its a great vehicle at the right price. With the new model coming out I was able to get a great deal. Paid 20 grand off list for a 2014 cause it had 3000 miles on it. Sales manager's car. Its a timeless beauty so I could care a less about the new car. I will buy that when its been out for 5 years and the price comes down. This is my second volvo and I have had zero issues. I don't keep cars past their warranty though. This one I got 6 years 100,000 miles. bumper to bumper. nice

I love Volvo's, and I agree that the XC90 is a bit outdated. However, i think it is still one of the most stunning looking full-size SUV's on the market today. But if you dont need the third row, you are better off with an xc60.

2012 XC90---"It looks like the Volvo XC90 is getting used to being the cream of the crop, winning the Vincentric Best Value in America award for the second year in row. This stylish crossover had no problem beating out 9 other crossovers in this category, with top scores in depreciation and insurance costs. Other driving forces included low fuel costs and total cost of ownership that was 3% less than expected. This premium crossover demonstrates that premium vehicles can also be great values."

I want an XC90. It's quirky, safe, and the 3.2 is somewhat reliable. It may not be the most advanced or the quickest but slow and steady wins the race! Having this car be virtually unchanged since 2004 makes the newer models have all the kinks worked out. GO VOLVO!

And as far as the GPS navigation system, the "heads up" display was placed there to be in the "line of sight" of the driver. Volvo does not want you to take your eyes off of the road to find out where you are going. And yes, the system is VOICE ASSISTED. Never use the navigation system in a way that distracts you from the task of driving safely. Distractions can lead to a serious accident. Set & make changes in your navigation system only with the vehicle parked.

"Oh this car is outdated and the radio controls are terrible, slow steering, terrible driving dynamics" Are you kidding me? Are going to bitch about every little thing out there. My car doesn't even have iPod Controls. I'd be lucky to own one of these! I am truly sick and tired of rich people complaining about the littlest things. If anything is outdated it's from the first cars up to cars made in 2003. This is not that outdated if you think about it. A backup camera and GPS system, iPod connect, I know newer cars have a lot more features but at least this thing can keep up to date with playing songs from my phone.

It maybe old body look..... and yet still popular on the market. Saw many new ones on the street. Evergreen body design. Hopefully they don't come out another version of the XC90, and instead, name the new car something else. Let the classic remain. Bought this in 2009. The 3.2L version is very reliable. Never missed a beat. Maybe a bit heavy when pick up. But when it cruised at 170kph, very stable. Safety is the key with its BORON steel cage.

I just saw an advertisement for the new Infiniti JX mid-size SUV. It looked a lot like the XC90. The 'modern touches' on it only made it look like a 1930s version of what a futuristic car would look like. I think car designs that are emerging now will be to cars as the 1960s & 70s where to clothes. I'll keep the "understated Scandinavian elegance" of my XC90.

" I'm able to look up any vehicle structure that was manufactured in the past 20 years. The XC90 has more Boron metal in it then any other structure to date. Boron is the strongest metal in the auto industry. It's stronger then ultra high strength steel. Most high end vehicles have a combination of high strength and ultra high strength. There is no Boron in them, like the XC90." {Not even the XC60 has as much.} VFLXC90

I've driven one of these before, a 2004. And wow, 10 years later, nothing's new, except for the phone menu, back-up camera, and blind-spot detection. Sure, you can make the argument of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", but for a $40,000 luxury SUV, it's just not competitive, and you expect a lot more for the price. It doesn't look old, but it feels old.

I picked up a new 2013 in 2012 with a premium plus package for the low 40s. I’ve had it for nine years. I would give it eight out of 10 stars. I’ve gone through three blower motors which is annoying. And a computer.But the mechanical stuff is good. Biggest complaint is this thing is so heavy it needs tires. I’ve had three sets of high dollar tires in 80,000 miles

I currently am driving a friend's '07 XC90 with the Yamaha V8. It has a very high class and luxurious European feel to it, and I love it. This CR review is very biased and looks at the car compared to the times and other models vs it's own value. I've always taken CR reviews with a grain of salt.

"The XC90 is so successful in establishing an almost cult following for quality, style, safety and style, that anything they build will have to be so superior. That is going to be a tough job, especially if I look at the XC60 for falling into the cute gizmo-fad design features we recently saw when we test drove one. There were some nice things about the XC60 but compared to a XC90 they could have taken the identification off the inside of the car and I would have thought I was in a Mazda."-Mr P

Volvo is a boutique car company that sells about 400,000 cars/year, but somehow manages to stay on the cutting edge of safety. And this 10 yr old XC90 is still winning safety awards! GM, Ford, Toyota, etc., each sell millions of cars every year, and while managing to change their car designs every 5 yrs, their safety budgets lag behind Volvo. Maybe after spending large amounts of money on safety, this small car company doesn't have the money to redesign their cars every 5 yrs. Lighten up people.

@ConnorGibbsAK
@ConnorGibbsAK 6 жыл бұрын
It looks angled down, but when you are sitting in the drivers seat, its angled perfectly towards you. Because the XC90 is uni-body, you sit in the car vs on top of a chassis like in a truck, so your seat is lower than it would be in most SUVs. Also it helps against glare. However I will say that if you have dust on the screen like I always did, the glare will still suck awfully XD

Unfortunately, car reviews are pointless these days. The general rule is, they will always find many things to complain about regardless of how minor they are unless the car is made by the nations sweetheart... BMW ! It seems the car industry is corrupt in a way, almost as if BMW pay the reviewers to sing songs of praise for their cars and blow off others as "Not as good as a BMW". I have a had a decent number of all the Germans, and I would pick a volvo above them any day ! Volvo for Life !!!!

A completely negative review, and to be completely honest, the reviewer completely blew Volvo off in reporting what Volvo actually brought to the table. He talks like he knows everything about high end, performance SUVs but he should be comparing them to his Prius sitting in the parking lot. Also, get used to this, it's the first generation XC90! The second generation is said to be equiped with a more suitable engine to run with the competition. Second generation will be realeased in 2014.

First of all, who the hell puts their children in the third row of seats? Small children belong in the 2nd row, so that the driver can monitor them. The fronts seats are anti-fatigue with lumbar support, to keep your ass awake while your driving. Also, not to many models have the built-in phone option. Besides, I don't know of any way to accidently push those phone buttons, if they're inside the steering wheel perimeter. The steering wheel responsiveness was designed to be "speed sensitive".

In an Edmund's Consumer Favorites; Best Family Vehicle poll for 2012, the XC90 came in second in this consumer poll. "As in polls past, the Ford Explorer was the clear favorite, grabbing a full 25 percent of your votes. Volvo's aging but still competitive XC90 and Toyota's fuel efficient Highlander tied for 2nd, with 10 percent apiece, while the workhorse Chevrolet Tahoe was right on their tailgates at 9 percent. " Consumer Reports is wide of the mark in it's hyper-criticism of the XC90.

Yes you buy Volvo for Luxury. I love Volvo TO DEATH but it's true they could have done at least a few more updates to this car. It was class leading for about the first 3 years of its life span, and still highly competitive mid-way through. Now it's just behind in pretty much every respect. The only things this car beats the Germans at is overall practicality, comfort, ride, and safety. Though, thankfully Volvo is getting the new XC90 out late 2013. :D

Volvo is a small botique car company that sold just 450,000 cars in 2011. The XC90 was one of it's models that sold very well--nearly 40,000 units sold. Not as hot as the XC60 or the S60, but still very good sales number. Still a IIHS top safety pick, the XC90 was the cheapest car to insure in 2011. Seems to me like the general public doesn't agree with this review.

Satnav is irrelevant as everyone uses phone/Google maps/Waze which is updated far better than all car satnavs. What's important is phone charging points. The reverse camera really isn't slow considering any driver should at least turn their head to look behind for a sec before reversing, by then the reverse cam is up - it's a good habit not to rely on tech for basic driving skills. No one really looks at Ipod titles! If you put it there you should know what it is from the first word! This guy didn't even talk about space and 3rd row which is the whole reason people buy these kinda cars!

Another biased and very subjective review. I think most peoples transportation needs vary a lot. I am a very satisfied XC90 owner with a need for 1) a safe car for my family (including some young drivers) and myself, 2) a car with high towing capacity (2200 kg / 4800 lbs), 3) 7-seats, 4) AWD for safe driving during winter on snowy/icy roads. As safety is my absolutely primary concern, sports-car characteristics don't matter to me.

Nope. Making good profits now. The XC90 is still selling well, and the new XC60 is selling like hotcakes. And a big expansion is pending in China.

I own a 2007 with almost 100,000 miles on it. It's been the most unreliable vehicle I've ever owned, except for maybe my 1989 Escort GT. I've experienced multiple system failures - including but not limited to - the power steering pump at 80,000 miles. It is a very heavy AWD vehicle and tires do not last more than 10,000 - 15,000 miles. I believe the weight is also a factor in the need to replace nearly every front suspension component before reaching 100,000 miles. The AWD is a joke. It gets stuck on grass. The rear hatch struts fail without notice and the extremely heavy hatch will fall on your head. They are $100 each. The ride is unacceptably cheap and choppy for a $50,000 vehicle. The interior is pleasant but laughably cramped compared to even the most modest of modern CUV interiors, say for example, a Honda CRV. This vehicle has high safety ratings from both the IIHS and the Euro NCAP but guess what? So does every other vehicle made now. If you're considering buying this car new or used, I *highly* recommend you don't.

Hey genius. I own the 2011, I live in Alaska. If I can drive my AWD XC90 around when most people can't get out of their driveway, I'm sure the AWD system is pretty good ;). You are just another commenter attempting to be a troll and failing, being one upped by someone who actually uses their AWD. The reliability is an issue I'll admit, but the only issue I've had with mine is a couple parts needing to be replaced that took like 2 weeks. If you need to replace your tires and engine components that frequently, have you ever thought it might just be your driving style? Especially since you're coming from an Escort GT... Also if its getting stuck on grass, and you're replacing your suspension, maybe stop driving in rough areas that have soft ground? Stop driving to the point where your car is bouncing around and you dig into the grass because you're driving like a dick, and then you get stuck. Also the tire situation could probably be easily explained by you buying low quality tires. I know many people with XC90s, I own an XC90, my old High School teacher owns an XC90 that she's had since 2004 and I still see her driving around my neighbourhood. That thing must have like 200K miles on it by now, and yet you are the only person that I have ever seen that complained this much about it. I'm positive its entirely your driving style, because no one deals with those issues, not even a person who lives in one of the harshest climates in the world where temps regularly get to -40, ME.
