Thanks Helmut, for some very informative videos on PHEV's. I recently purchased a 2022 Volvo XC90 Recharge Extended Range, and I am loving it. To date, I've driven only in the hybrid mode, and have 3,740 miles on it, averaging 30.3 miles per gallon. Of those 3740 miles, there were two long trips, totaling 2800 miles, where I was unable to recharge at night. The rest of the driving was around town wherein I try and minimize using the ICE and with recharging every night. I usually can get 40 miles from just the battery when in Hybrid mode. When driving, I try to drive intelligently, using the B and D modes, without fast starts and sudden braking. On flat ground and in traffic, I'm usually in D mode, but when slowing for a turn, I'll switch to B mode using the braking effect as I would when using a manual transmission car and dropping down a gear to slow. I've also been very impressed with the Volvo on Call app, and the records it keeps when you use the log function. I export the data in an Excel format and have established my own personal log. What impresses me is that the "calculated" consumption of fuel, and the actual amount I've added to the car are within 1.2% of each other over those 3700 miles. Any further advice you can offer on ways to improve my fuel economy would be appreciated (I watched your 5 tips Video).

Hi John, wow, thank you very much and I'm really happy to help. There's one thing I've noticed only almost a year into driving the car, which is that if you are in B and you step on the brakes regen doesn't go up according to the braking power, whereas you are in D it so does. So now when I have to brake with the foot-brakes I make sure that I am in D, as regen obviously works better than.

Excellent video thanks. My only criticism is that I wish it was longer, as the tips are very useful to me as a T8 owner. For instance tips on when to use the Charge mode. And also hybrid v pure mode !

We have a 2013 US C-max Energi, which is a plugin hybrid with 188 hp. When the plugin power is depleted, I can get 4.7l/100km in town and 5.8l/100km cruising at 120 km/hr (about 75 mph here in the US) so even after using the plugin power it is still very efficient. If they would have sold them in Germany, I would have one at our family house there as well. I am considering a 2023-24 XC90 next.

@Ecodriver Thanks for the quality content! What is the Volvo XC90 Recharge consumption at highway speeds of 120 or 130km/h with empty battery? I saw that e.g. German ADAC rates highway consumption with empty battery at 11.8l/100km, which is very far away from your 6.6l/100km @100km/h. I am curious if the XC90 can be moved at highway speeds in most European countries at a competitive consumption when driving at constant speed and with empty battery. Also, did you notice any signs of battery degradation over the cars lifetime?

I have the T8 and with just using petrol and driving no faster than 75 mph/120 km per hour I can average 6.5 litres per hour on a 35 km drive or more.

Great video, thanks! I was just researching this topic and couldn't find good sources. In fact I was looking for the same model even! I'm about to buy an used one and I was wondering how the car will perform with empty battery as I may not have a chance to charge the car always. And of course I need to remember the battery degradation.

Yesterday I drove from Zurich (Altitude around 400 metres) to Innsbruck (Altitude c. 570 metres), 320 kms, over the Silvretta-Pass (c. 2000 m Alt.), with an empty battery (the charger at the hotel didn't work), 7,1 l/100 kms, I was going at allowed motorway speeds (120 in Switzerland, 130 in Austria). Re degredation: usable capacity is only about 80% (ca. 8,5 kWh of 10,6 kWh), this is to reduce degredation. I can't comment on the longterm, as I own this car only for about one year and a half.

I think battery degredation is not an issue. I have the 10.4 battery XC90 T8, first registered NOV17 and after 70000 km my range is as good as new, and I charge every day. Consumption average of ownership is 5.4 litres per 100km

@@davids4696 Awesome to hear! In fact I decided to go with a very similar car to yours. :) My consumption seems to be currently around 9L/100km / 26mpg. I think that might be due to traveling and unable to charge. A question for you, if you don't mind. When exactly should you use the save and charge features on the road? Does it make any sense to charge the battery on the highway?

@@insoYT hi. So the ideal is that you use all your charge by the time you reach the destination. For instance if I'm travelling 86 km to Chamonix from Geneva with motorway max speed 110kmh, I will choose Hold on the motorway and release it (switch to Hybrid) when I get to the 14km climb up the mountain. Therefore using electric on lower speed climb. As Helmuth says, electric is less efficient at motorway speeds. His scenic XC90 video has a reference to using Charge function which I never used but wish to learn more about!

Yes. Approx 300 bhp plus electric motor power is around 100bhp. I have the T8 with supercharger and turbo, but my car is V90.

Mate why someone will buy a xc90 to fly, if you want to fly buy a volvo v60, v70, s80 t6 or something old mk1 s40 v40 T4 , or 850 t5 or t5r, s60,v70 t5 or R, this is a family car, very safe and heavy duty made😊. Swedish tank ❤.

If some buy a 400+hp car to drive 30-60kmh. Fk it. I'm staying with allroad b9 with full sized 3.0l v6 mapped to 330hp on dynostand, 143g/km CO2, whereas in real life situation equipped with thule rack on a hitch x2 bikes, L thule box, loaded with additional 120kg + 1 pax, stays below 8L per 100km driving 140-150kmh. Making 6.5L with the same load if you'll find yourself enjoying sceneries at 80-100kmh staying away of motorways. Fits up to 2m parkings with those L box on the top. Delivers stable 5.0sec to 100kmh with no magic. Unloaded. Cheers mates.

This its completely rubbish. As an owner of many hybrid as plug in hybrid cars this it’s not a truth at all. As a 5 year proud owner of Volvo XC60 T8 this numbers on this video it’s not possible in long term. Empty battery fuel composition in city it’s around 5.9L/100km long term conclusion. Open road 110-120 km/h 7,9 - 8,5 L/100km long term conclusion. If your foot it’s little big heavy on the gas pedal fuel consumption it’s 11-12L/100km. This it’s real numbers of fuel consumption.

CHARGING SMARJING , THIS MODE THAT MODE , PUBLIC CHARGE POINTS working , not working , tarriffs differing . What a hullaballoo ESPECIALLY FOR the 7 -8 months of cold windy and wet months after you have had to from your hard earned ££££ fork out 30 % to 40% more dosh to actually buy the plug in or hybrid or ev vehicle against a economic small engined petrol model or even dare i say it a more sophisticated diesal engined model .
