SIPS also have a steel pole in the front seats running along it’s width, so in a side collision the seats can slide towards the middle of the car and use the centre console (which has a steel box inside) as a crumple zone to reduce force on the passengers by allowing more intrusion of the car but still maintaining passenger space. If you watch a side pole test, the intrusion is great but you can watch the seats slide across to the other side of the car.

I was in a horrendous wreck about 30 years ago and am lucky to be alive. I have driven only Volvo since. I love my 2020 xc90, the safety feature upgrade from my 2017 is amazing and now even more features I was unaware.

I recently went to an auto locksmith in New Jersey, USA, to have a second key programmed for my '04 Volvo XC90. The young technician who took care of me asked 'They're still making Volvo's? I thought they went out of business.' I assured the tech that yes, they are still making Volvo's, but the company is no longer an independent company (owned by Geely) and pitched the safety aspects of owning one. Sadly, he did not seem impressed.

It's called pretension on the seatbelts, it's intended to keep your spine upright in the event of an accident. Also, Volvo uses a lot of boron steel and other ultra high strength metals for its frame. Subaru has a fraction of the high strength steel that Volvo uses, yet for some reason all the Subaru commercials would have you think they build safer cars than anyone 😂

Yes, Volvo is #1 for safety. I was in a t-bone accident head - on going 30 mph and walked from it

Absolutely safety is the #1 reason I purchased my '04 XC90 T6. The first generation XC90's are affordable in the New York City area which makes these extremely safe cars within reach of just about anyone.

I had a ‘06 XC90 and I completely agree with you (I’m in the U.K.) I swapped it 3 years ago to a ‘11 XC90 and I’m now looking to upgrade it to a ‘17 XC90. This swap is purely to get the new safety features. I would personally not drive any other car than a Volvo and having 4 kids makes my choice an easy one 😅 so far the only one that’s big enough is the XC90. Looking forward to the exciting release of the XC100 in 2023.

Another reason I switched to a Volvo is watching the increase in speeding drivers on the roads which seems to have become more common during the lockdown here in the New York City, US area. A lack of enforcement of speeding laws and the popularity of high horsepower sporty vehicles in the hands of drivers who disregard safety for the thrill of speed is a dangerous mix.

You can make out the WHIPS system on the seat. Had the seat out to clean the carpets and giving the car a forensic deep clean. Very interesting designs underneath. Worth looking at.

Owned Volvos for over 30yrs now. Knew about the SIPS etc but not the other features like the seat retracting, the seat belt tensioning, and the braking. So another helpful one from your good self ;) do they still have the metal rod that ran horizontally through the door panels ? that used to be one of Volvo's safety selling points. p.s. how would i know if my Volvo has had the seatbelt recall done ??

It was nice of Volvo to allow other car companies to use the 3 point seatbelt.... I just wish ford would of done the same with the heated windscreen....

Ya And way Ford does it too is terrible.. makes for a very uneven melt pattern and if your glass is damaged it could crack further. Not only that but heater lines are distracting! Like if your the company makes the patent and trolls for $ for other car makers to have access you should do it best.. not the other way around Ford does it the worst! Clearly patent trolls

Great video! Only thing I can’t understand with the WHIPS system is what if you have rear passengers? Surely it would crush their legs?
@universalassociates6857

I have the same question. I think the correct answer would include the fact that the design allows the seatbacks to go back just so far, and not all the way back. Please see my comment above that mentions the injuries caused by seatback failures in other makes and models. Those most vulnerable to injuries are children. Typically we are instructed to place them securely in car seats strapped in the back. Most manufactures know of the danger and Government safety agencies often ignore this hidden danger. The manufacturers need to be required to design and test the front seatbacks to protect both the front and backseat passengers.
@universalassociates6857
@universalassociates6857 3 жыл бұрын
Another thing to keep in mind is if the seatbacks would go back all the way, not only would the backseat passengers be badly injured, but the driver and the front seat passenger would slip out of the restraints and be propelled into the back of the vehicle. Tragically this happens more often than most realize. Just google 'seat back failure injury lawsuit' to see. Sadly, injured people, law firms, and even the manufacturers know about this - but the public is largely unaware.

The seat will only go back so far as to absorb the force of the impact, it will not crush any legs. It is very important not to put anything on the floor in the backseat, behind the frontseat, that will prevent the frontseat to move backwards, e.g. a hard suitcase.

Boron steel is the element that makes volvo a solid car. Also,your driver seatbelt should not look like that after the recall. The recall stated that the plastic bit and the rubber part must be removed.That was they have done to my car

I used to think exactly the same, and whilst it's half true that the gap has become far less significant, Volvo individual models still keep winning 'safest car in the world' as the latest model scores the highest ratings in all sorts of regards. So they are still the safest as they do put more budget into it but I agree that you are still in very safe hands in other manufacturers
