Thanks for this demonstration, Gary! It's amazing how a few simple processing steps can make such a difference in the sound of a recording. I hadn't every thought about compression actually helping to give more substance to a thin sound. I've been practicing exercises to increase my vocal resonance, and perhaps I can now also use a bit of compression for a more full-bodied sound! 😄

What I didn’t mention was that compression should be used sparingly and sometimes not at all. It all depends on how your voice is sounding and what you are reading; commercials benefit from a compressor, but audiobooks need a wider dynamic range and so should be free of processing.

Thanks for the additional info! I'm recording mostly commercials and promos, and will be extra careful if tempted to use compression with audiobooks - and, perhaps, in-show narration. @@GaryTerzza
