The title is a little misleading, there is not 'hysterical' pregnancy at all. Its a psychological one!
@banjoman448 жыл бұрын
+Krijn van Alten False pregnancy, phantom pregnancy, or hysterical pregnancy- officially called pseudocyesis in humans and pseudopregnancy in other mammals-is the appearance of clinical or subclinical signs and symptoms associated with pregnancy when the organism is not actually pregnant.
@KAvanAlten8 жыл бұрын
banjoman44 But why is it called hysterical then? I mean, with such a pseudocyesis there is not actually something in the uterus, right?
@banjoman448 жыл бұрын
The word 'hysteria' is based on a Greek word for ''uterus'' It was once thought that many diseases and ailments that affected women were due problems with the uterus. The word has now changed meaning, although we still speak of women undergoing a hyster-ectomy. ie removal of the uterus.The word hysterical is now concerned with emotional excess - something that someone with a pseudocyesis will likely experience.
@KAvanAlten8 жыл бұрын
banjoman44 I know that, but I thought that in the medical word these days 'hysteria' in the meaning of the emotional condition is avoided. So if you see it used now in medical terminology (like hysterical pregnancy or the hysterectomy) it refers only to the meaning of uterus. But, I have to honest: this is (I think) the case in the Dutch medical word, I can't speak of the situation outside the Netherlands. Also: on the Dutch Wikipedia, the synonym hysterical pregnancy is not used, but pseudocyesis is named instead. I know this is not hard proof for anything, but it might be a sign that the word 'hysterical pregnancy' is not that common used (anymore) here.
@banjoman448 жыл бұрын
You are right Krijn, the term 'hysterical pregnancy' is certainly a term of antiquity.

Unbelievable as it might be I can vouch for the truth of this situation….as a childcare SW I met a young woman who not only lied about her pregnancy to her parents….they bought all the gear…cot, pram, clothes..bedding, bottles etc…she went up to her room one night and came down telling her parents that she had had the babe and it was sleeping in the cot…and she was going up the pub. They investigated and found that the baby in the cot was a doll….long before the days of these lifelike ones…she told other whoppers too….and people believed her.
