I have played with Alvin Queen on 2 tours and a bunch of other gigs. He don't drag, period. He is the groove, period. Either the other cats are not in his pocket, or the sound is bouncing all over the room. His groove would eat you alive. It ate me. Also - what the hell is it with people, when jazz musicians concentrate, they are not pissed. How does anyone know Grossman felt this or that - unless he told you? You have no idea what any of them are thinking.

You are right on the money. Concentrating is not anger and getting back into your body after being in the zone takes a few seconds so your not pissed off just coming back.

Alvin dead on the money-wide beat. Tempo locked baby. Drummer is the band. Joe hooks with the drummer. It´s a jam -just dig it and drop all the negative vibes. Bright Moments!

I've played this a couple of times and I just don't hear the drummer dragging. "The drummer" is Alvin Queen, he's played with plenty of big names, he's not exactly some chump bush league local they picked up for this gig, so you'd think he knows how to keep time. If I'm wrong, then I guess I flunk the "you're rushing/you're dragging" Whiplash class. Who knows what Grossman was doing playing his solo at the drummer. On one of his other videos he's playing sitting on a chair sideways to the audience in front of the drumset, playing his solo away from mic. And I certainly don't see anything to lead me to think the bass player (whose playing I like) was disenchanted with Queen's playing.

Jude F. the drummer is keeping the tempo it's that Lovano is playing way behind the beat in a lazy style similar to Dexter Gordon .most inexperienced drummers would have slowed down

Alvin Queen is swinging his ass on here, not sure what some of you all are hearing lol. Alvin was the drummer of choice for no less than Dexter Gordon, Horace Silver and countless other greats. Steve wouldn’t be playing with him if he didn’t love his playing.

he was engaging with the drummer. If he had gotten closer, the drum mikes would have picked up more

What happened here is the rhythm section as a whole mistakenly slowed down for Joe Lovano. What makes his playing unique is he slightly drags and plays behind in a perfect sweet spot, always has. If the rest of the group starts slowing down with him it just defeats the purpose, which is what happened here. His entire solo sounded like a jumbled mess because they were trying too hard to match him.

When I started listening I immediately noticed mic was too low ! Kudos to Lovano who played politically correct great solo using what he had available at his disposal and came out like a pro ! Oh well he is a pro other 2 cats need to learn a lot more sax and being and dealing with stage !
@denniswong73556 жыл бұрын
Hard to evaluate Grossman's sound since he's off the mike and I couldn't hear him, the Italian player is okay but Lovano smokes. Alvin Queen most have had a bad hangover since he's dragging.
@adamrafferty4 жыл бұрын
WTF are you talking about. Queen doesn't drag. Ever. If you are hearing a discrepancy - that means they are ahead of him. Or - more likely, when the sound is less than optimal, bouncing all over the room - glitches are easy.
@bobblues11584 жыл бұрын
Alvin Queen is COMPLETELY STRAIGHT!!! I know him and have played and toured with him. His time is the right time.
