You would be able to draw more air thru the coals if the top of your contraption is smaller in diameter. The reason being the hot air has to move faster to exit the contraption, thereby drawing more air into the combustion chamber allowing for a hotter fire.

After watching your video I went to the local superstore and bought a bowl for £1.99 (England) and cut the bottom off. That was about 6 months ago, I must have used it 50 times. Awesome tip. Thanks

Out of interest, which shop did you get one from? And any idea what size it was? (UK buddy over here)

I have a large vertical cabinet LP smoker. I use the burner to light the charcoal in a stainless steel veggie steamer made for grills. Once the charcoal is lite I turn the gas off. Wood chunks and chips for smoke. I am playing with a smoke tub and pellets also! Great idea you had!

I did the same thing but the bowl I used was much thicker. I had to use a grinder took about 5 minutes to cut out and 5 minutes to clean and smooth out. Nice looking wings.
@smokehousebbq73505 жыл бұрын
Yea, much thicker, I would or broke the grinder out too, with a cut off wheel, thanks for watching.

Might actually try this. I get pretty good results just using the standard baskets in the middle of the grill. Just have to keep a closer watch on it cause the food gets more direct heat that way. After I seen the price of those stupid things I figured I'd just settle for what came with the grill lol. Nice video man.

Yeah I had an old chimney starter cut about 1.5 inches from the top and hacked off the arms. Worked just like a vortex
@kennydykes11454 жыл бұрын
I had an old Walmart chimney starter, I thought of cutting up, but it was still functional, so I took it to the deer lease. Charcoal fluid is a cherished comodity there in the sticks, since we're all a little Pyro there to get a fire stared quick. Thanks for watching.

Great way to save money! Does the vortex make a difference compared to direct cooking? I have had great crispy wings using direct heat with no flareups since you can control the air intake. My thermometer shows 350 degrees by the way.
@smokehousebbq73502 жыл бұрын
I usually only use it now when cooking wings, but I prefer wings on my stick burner, no flair ups and a consistent cook, with no flipping. But I do love to save a buck or two. Thanks for watching.

Hey Cap'n Kenny. You made it happen with that $ 1.21 bowl. I like that. That is equivalent to the sayin "A Country Boy can survive". I also like that last line..that's ok about any thumbs down..I can take it. LOL. By the way, nice job on the wings.

Appreciate it Phil, your one of the four that motivated me to start filming my cooks, T-roy, Babyback Maniac, SDSBBQ and you. Thanks for the motivation to get started. Cooking is a breeze, but throw filming it in there, now I realize, it's defiantly a talent/skill. Having a newer camera was my best upgrade that made it a lot easier, my first camera was a mini DVD camera, now my new camera which uses SD cards, is the way to go. Keep filming, I'll try and catch up.

What kind of metal is that bowl ? I bought one and did this vortex hack and it worked perfect , thanks for this.. My question is if the bowl is not 100% stainless steel will there be some kind of toxins coming out of that bowl?

Yes, it's a stainless bowl. Thanks for watching.

No to sound bad, it seems like the fire is a bit low to the rack, I wonder if you used 2 bowls and bolted them together, one on top of the other. So you would have more fire in the pot. And a bigger space to fill with charcole. It would be closer to the grill great and I bet get much hotter.... I wonder how this would work in a Smokey Joe grill?... The large Weber grill takes so much cole. And I wonder if the Weber chimney would hold more cole, and get the grill too.? I hope you can see my point... I think this would be great for a smaller Smokey Joe, or Jr. grill

I got my Vortex for $25, and my grill gets over 500 degrees on a nice summer day. This is deff a good option if you're wanting to save some cash though.
