80% of the Razor for 50% of the price...My Illumination is tight, none of that wobble..overall I'm very happy with mine. On 1x there is slight magnification at objects close,under 3yards or less but not really noticeable. Only other downside is weight. But its built like a tank, definitely "duty grade" and will stand up to abuse (plus vortex warranty if something does happen). Throw lever is a must, but you can find decent plastic ones for $20ish (I have an Anarchy Outdoors one that's solid) For the price it can't be beat and I agree. If you are looking at Strike Eagle/Primary Arms and can hold off and save a little more this definitely worth the extra price

Vortex just did an update of the strike eagle to include a bdc reticle similar to the acss. I asked vortex when they were going to include the new reticle in the viper and the response was “not anytime in the near future” after seeing how positive this scope was in tracking, I will just make my own custom turret cap tuned to my chosen load. This really does look to be 70-80% as good as the razor for half the price.

@paulyp9853 Жыл бұрын
First thing is that I want to thank CDoes for all of the great content. He is my first stop when it comes to reviews on optics. I guess the natural comparison is between the Viper and Razor - both Gen 2 1-6x. I have both and the Razor is a better optic. The Viper is very good and will serve you well, but the Razor is a better optic. Eye relief, eye box, and its clearer at the high magnifications. Again not bashing the Viper it’s a great optic, but its not the Razor - no shame in that. It punches above its weight class ---very true, but not the far up. Now if you throw in term “for the money”. That is adding the theory of diminishing returns. We can apply that to anything cant we? When using diminishing returns the cheaper item usually seems the better move. Someone from Vortex said that the Viper is 85% of the Razor for 50% of the money. Brilliant strategy. Why? People who can and want to will pay the premium for that extra 15%, and people who don’t want to or cant feel they are not missing much and spending less. Brilliant. Do you really think someone that gets paid upon company sales is going say anything publicly to hurt either line? Cmon. I have both a T2 and a Romeo 5. The T2 with a mount is between $8-900. The Romeo 5 is $100. Now is the T2 9x better than the Romeo. No its not. Is the Romeo 50% of the T2 for 12% of the cost? Maybe. The Romeo 5 is the better buy by this math. We can do this all day with anything…cars, appliances,….anything.
@weekendwarrior83344 жыл бұрын
Really appreciate all the hard work that goes into these reviews! Vortex is pretty vocal about the fact that the jump from the Viper Gen 2 to the Razor is very small compared to the big jump from the Strike Eagle to the Viper Gen 2. One question I do have? Do you find that the center crosshair is thinner on the Viper Gen 2 compared to the Steiner for a more precise aiming point?
@CDOES4 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate! Vortex is a very honest company. They certainly lead by example. To answer your question. The PST II has a thinner crosshair. It makes it great for precise shots. The P4Xi is thicker, but stands out really well. Its quicker to pick up on. Steiner inside 200 on larger targets. Vortex for a more DMR style setup. Both have there rolls to play.
@weekendwarrior83344 жыл бұрын
C_DOES I found the quote a Vortex employee said about the Viper 1-6 compared to the Razor 1-6: “It is 80% of the optic for 50% of the price.” Vortex is truly one of the best companies out there, not just in the optics industry, but any industry. I probably sound like a fanboy and that’s fine by me. I am big fan of any company that provides great products, for good value, with the best customer service.

I have had a gen 1 Strike Eagle 1-8, a gen 2 Strike Eagle 1-8, and I am waiting on my PST 1-6 to arrive . Vortex is really great at taking the innovations from their top tier optics and scaling it to their lower end. The difference between the gen 1 and 2 SE is pretty crazy. I bet next year at some point they will have a gen 3 PST 1-8 or 1-10 FFP.
@shane200993 жыл бұрын
Do you like your Viper better then your strike eagle?
@betternameneeded64753 жыл бұрын
@@shane20099 I do like it better. The fisheye around the edge is less but still there. The illumination in it really does act like a red dot. The downside of the viper is that its heavy. With my standard vortex mount it is 32oz. The strike eagle with mount weigh an oz less than just the viper itself. If it's just target shooting and having fun the SE is great though. If you can stand the weight I would just get the viper. I found mine with a promo code for $550 and my SE was $400 with a mount. Way bigger than a $150 quality difference
@jokov99034 жыл бұрын
I had a Strike Eagle 1x8. I was chuck hunting the first time wit it.I thought the optics were pretty good. Then I spotted a groundhog with my cabelas Alaskan Guide 10x42 binoculars, they were $500 binos from the bargain cave that I bought for $214. Now I know they were 10 power but, I’m talking glass quality now. When I picked up my rifle to shoot the groundhog and looked through the Stike Eagle...man! Was I bummed, it sucked compared to the binos a lot. I lost interest in them pretty quickly. I now have the Gen11 Viper 1x6. I haven’t used it yet but the glass is night and day difference with the SE.

@sethrich59984 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t say the Strike Eagles are junk, I have a gen1 and used it for a while. It does well at its price point. But that’s what it is, a budget optic. If you can afford it I’d definitely say go up to the Viper but if not the Strike Eagles will work just fine. I have a Kahles K16i I run now. I’ll probably get a Viper as a backup, for a quarter of the price it really isn’t that far behind. I think the illumination is actually brighter than the Kahles.

I think you just sold me on buying this scope. I have a SWFA 1-4 and it's a good scope but I'm just not feeling it for my personal use. I realized I don't like exposed turrets for an AR because I keep getting misses from bumping the turrets by accident, and I want a plain MRAD reticle like this Vortex scope has. I guess you live and you learn.
@Ir0nF1st9243 жыл бұрын
I do believe you have just sold me on this. The brightness of the dot is amazing (at least through the camera). A simple, uncluttered reticle is king for a CQB to mid range rifle. Edit: The scope just got delivered to me and I am super impressed with it. Turrets are solid, diopter and magnification rings are tight, glass is super clear, and the dot is impressively bright. Just waiting on the MK Machining throw lever and LaRue mount.

Ive got an 11.5 that im trying to settle on an optic for. I like this a lot but im concerned that it might be just a little too chunky and I wish the reticle had a little bit of a "cqb" application. The dot is great overall but im not sure about close quick target acquisition
@bryy20533 жыл бұрын
@Jugg Jugg yeah and the glass seems very clear. Im not a weight fanatic but i am trying to keep the platform light, and since I have astigmatism, each red dot ive looked through is kind of annoying, although I haven't tried an aimpoint or the higher end ones. Its a centurion arms and its amazingly light for what it is, so I just don't what to throw a bunch of weight on it if I can avoid it. I may just have to deal with it because everything is a tradeoff. I also have to figure out a light situation because the rail has QD points up front at the 3 and 9 o'clock, which is where I usually mount lights, so rail space is a slight issue.

I was 660 all in for everything. This was roughly January of this year too. When this demo scope arrived I couldn't tell it had ever been opened. They repackaged it that well or didn't open anything but the scope plastic itself. Infact the battery was still in its sealed baggy. I have 2 razor gen II E in 1x6, that said this optic is awesome for someone that doesn't want/need to plop a razor on multiple Ar15s. I wanted one more LPVO mixed in with the rest of my RDS Ar's

@CDOES4 жыл бұрын
5oz is noticeable for sure. Easily carry a few more of your favorite caliber on you without notice. However, for the price that the PST goes for. It really makes the deal that much sweeter. As good as the P4xi is. If its more then $600 or so I think you could better spend your money elsewhere. Like with a PST. 2x more magnification (which is flawless) and similarly bright illumination. Trying to decide between this and the Delta Stryker 1-6. I like this reticle better, and I trust Vortex as a company more than a European company mostly unknown to me like Delta. But the Stryker is much lighter and is supposed to have better glass. I'm unsure which one would be more durable.
Great Review. Would love to hear your impressions of the SLX 1-8 FFP ACSS from primary arms if you come across one. I have one and mostly love it. The eye box is a bit finicky though esp at higher magnification.
@CDOES4 жыл бұрын

@1unkn0wn4 жыл бұрын
@@CDOES I wonder if it has more to do with the FFP vs SFP design honestly. Even at 5/6x its decently tight. Not bad, just a bit finicky. Both vortex options are known for having forgiving eye boxes from my understanding. Have you found that to be the case?
@CDOES4 жыл бұрын
@@1unkn0wn that would be very interesting to test. 2 identical scopes, one ffp one sfp and put them head to head. I would imagine that sfp scopes might be better at higher magnification. But the honest answer is that there are so many variables that determine how well a scope functions.
@1unkn0wn3 жыл бұрын
@@CDOES So many variables indeed. Mrgunsngear compared the primary arms sfp and ffp and found the FFP had better glass. I originally had the strike eagle and then ordered this one and after one look through the glass I immediately sold the strike eagle on ebay the same day. @PurpleMusicProductions4 жыл бұрын
@@CDOES I completely agree with you on that. I definitely cannot justify the razor even though I am sure it's superb but man that price point is phenomenal. I love the videos and subscribed a few weeks ago and I trust your opinion above many of larger (sponsored) channels, because you actually let us SEE the optics. Besides a certain amount of bias kicks in when companies are paying/donating to you vs you spending your own dime. I honestly cant speak for the PA Gen III offerings. I would Love to get my hands on some for review. There are some optics that have changeable reticles. I just cant imagine them being to sturdy.

@@CDOES I agree that a changeable reticle that would be decent is a long way off. More likely to have entirely digital setups for something like that... halo style! I didn't realize that your review was with gen ii primary arms; maybe they've improved.

Do you think the price difference is worth if over the newer strike eagle? I’ve been debating on which one to get which one do you recommend?

From all I have heard about the Gen ii strike eagles. The glass is basically the same as the Gen i's. I would certainly say that Yes. The PST ii is definitely worth the price difference.

Can you review, or discuss the pst 1-4 and it’s quality and comparison to the 1-6? Does anyone have any experience with the 1-4 ? I’m concerned about it’s really low price point, Does it’s low price point compared to the 1-6 indicated a shift in quality? Especially because I see it has a different scope body and design

The Gen I pst's are regarded to having very good overall quality and feel. The glass is very good for the price point. I have a review on it.

Have you looked at the upgraded strike eagles and if so would you still recommend this over the new strike eagles?

how does it compare with the sig whiskey5? dot brightness in particular

This is brighter, with less distortion at lower mag. It's a bit heavier tho, but nothing to write home about.
