Thank You for this Ep. LOVE IT. ANYTHING long range from Vortex and I will watch. 1 hour and 23 minutes of FUN talk. AWESOME!!! If not mistaken, was Jason also on another Vortex program? I seem to remember his background story. Jason is not the only ex-mil professional that cringes at the word "sniper". Last I checked the world record for ELR now sits at 7744 yards. It was set with something that barely looks similar to a rifle and scope. Still very impressive. I think the Team consisted of about 10 people. Thx again for another awesome Vortex Nation watch. Happy Shooting.

Would sub-quater mil be the next step beyond sub-MOA? Quater mil would be a slightly smaller spread, and quarter-mil does have a bit or a ring to it.

Still a ton of modern big brand scopes or red dots that come with “1 click = 1/4” at 100yds” or something similar, just due to limited space to write under the cap or on the turret. The scope uses minute of angle, it’s just written that way for brevity.

As a former USMC JTAC, and any military pilots can correct me if I'm wrong and they actually do something different in the cockpit itself, but when positioning aircraft in the sky we use ft MSL for fixed wing and ft AGL for rotary wing. Unless maybe he is talking about how they get their own altitude in the sky, which I THOUGHT was barometer. I could be wrong. I'm not a pilot, I just control them in the sky and use them for close air support (CAS). Any pilots out there? Now I'm curious if I'm wrong.

Something I want to know. If I wanted to build a “Short Barrel” 13.9”/14.5” P&W bolt action rifle for long range, what cartridge would be the best option for hitting out to distance and still packing a deer killing punch. Most ballistic charts for short action, full size and magnum loads get their data with 24-28” barrels, but short of 223 or smaller, almost none of them have data for P&W lengths

@jarredlkling 4 күн бұрын
300 WSM. It's short action so more lightweight for hunting and it's capable of killing anything in North America. It's a proven long range cartridge, the F class guys use it all the time. With the right powder you can get full powder burn in 16 inch I would imagine, you will lose a lot of velocity but that is just the name of the game going to 16"

Why even bother with Density Altitude when you can use Station Pressure?
@trevorkolmatycki4042
@trevorkolmatycki4042 4 күн бұрын
Why only use one or the other?… I use both… for different situations. If you hunt in a range of conditions it is much easier to relate to density altitude and temperature instead of station pressure, humidity, and temperature for planning and evaluation and discussion and estimation. For example: The conditions when/where I hunt Moose/Elk has variable altitude and ranges between: -10 ℃ / +1000ft DA Min. +10 ℃ / +3500ft DA Avg. +20 ℃ / +5000ft DA Max. And the conditions when/where I hunt deer has fixed altitude and ranges between: -15 ℃ / -1000ft DA Min. 0 ℃ / +1000ft DA Avg. +10 ℃ / +2000ft DA Max. When I’m actually in the field I use a Kestrel D3 to read actual temp/humidity/station pressure and blue tooth that into the solver on my iphone to get my actual ballistic solution which dumps a drop chart onto my apple watch for easy viewing. If/when conditions change I just update the chart with current kestrel measurements. I have gotten familiar enough with the location and conditions that I can estimate the density altitude and temperature with useable accuracy if the electronics fail. Plus I keep a drop chart based on the average conditions inside my scope cap. The devices use and measure station pressure. But without that if I’m going manual I can estimate density altitude and temperature. Station pressure is hard to relate to and estimate manually… that is what gadgets are for. After 2 years of monitoring actuals I have learned that for hunting range

If life is a simulation, and it probably is. We are spending our time doing something similar to a bodgy video game. I thought about this as I upgraded my telescope. Selling my old 3-grand scope, buying a 10-grand scope to get a better-simulated image of space, and spending my night setting it all up. Then I shoot cans with my 22 watching everything in space on a computer screen. I could just have a photo of Saturn while sitting in my lounge playing COD.

Who on earth decided on 1,000 yards as the distance to aspire to ? It does not make any sense ! I mean 1,000 m is a kilometre, which might mean something to those unfortunates who use that as a measure of distance. But for the rest of us it is just plain weird ! For us, 880 yds is a half mile, 1760 yds makes an aspirational distance, perhaps too far for most. Perhaps we should be looking at 880 yards,half a mile, to concentrate on. But 1,000, a meaningless part of a mile. Yards, a meaningless part of a kilometre. Who thunk up this, must have been a committee !!
@casman9635
@casman9635 4 күн бұрын
I think because most people shoot in yards. In that same point you could ask, "Why do people zero at 100yds, an insignificant place in a mile." We don't base everything off a mile. Most people shoot in yards and 1000 is just a nice round number. Most people don't shoot in miles.
@casman9635
@casman9635 4 күн бұрын
For example, we don't say, "My zero is at 0.0568 miles." We just say 100 yds.
