Ryan Muckenhirn joins Jimmy and Mark to discuss a cartridge that came up in one of our many “Podcasts after the podcast” conversations, the 8mm-06. While the cartridge itself is intriguing, it’s the history behind why it was made and the people who requested its creation that is so awesome. We’d love to know if any of you out there are using or loading for the 8mm-06. If so - let us know in the comments on KZbin or on Instagram!
As always, we want to hear your feedback! Let us know if there are any topics you'd like covered on the Vortex Nation™ podcast by asking us on any one of our social media platforms and using #VortexNationPodcast.

I rechambered my Mauser back in the 60’s to 8mm/06 and made a fine sport rifle out of it. We turned down the barrel and removed the sights then altered the bolt to accept a scope put in an adjustable trigger and had a Myrtlewood stock made for it. Shoots great.

@miketychewicz that sounds alot like my 1938 Persian Mauser. Somebody took great care and surely considerable expense to convert it. 29" barrel shortened to 24 3/4" and recrowned. 2 position safety and turned down bolt. Redfield bases, rechambered and custom made tiger maple with rosewood endcap Monte Carlo stock. Good thing they also installed a good butt pad because it kicks. I took my second deer this fall with it, but my loads are really built for moose and elk. Hopefully next fall I can test it on something bigger. Cheers.

Hey boys, thanks for giving a little respect to the old 8mm 06! I picked one up recently for $375.00 Canadian. It's a beauty. Some old guy sporterized it back in the 50's. Tiger maple stock with rosewood caps, nicely turned down bolt, modified safety, already had a Redfield base mounted. Been working up some loads and I can't wait to get out to the range. 200 grain Nosler Accubonds. Continued: Well I got the old 8mm-06 down to the range, and it shoots great. With 56 grains of 4350 it makes nice patterns at 100 and 200 yards.

👋🏼(SuggesTion Below to Consider) I’m glad to see this caliber discussed today, especially bc I just won bidding on a finely customized Mauser chambered on the 338-06 A-Square, instead of the 8mm-06. I chose this chambering to fit between my goto 270 Win and my only Magnum, the 375 H&H. This caliber fits perfectly in between the capabilities in the my bookend calibers when you consider bullet grain weight that each cartridge is best efficiently at 2850-3000fps. Please consider to touch base on this chambering even if it’s not on it own. 🤔 Such as a topic discussing very efficient and effective NON-Magnum rounds. 🙏

The 8mm-06 was a great game getter, but there was more to making one than running the reamer in. If you did that you would have an inaccurate rifle, you really needed to set the threads back and reface the barrel before reaming. The problem is the 8x57 neck in military rifles is large enough to create an extra shoulder on the 8mm-06. Two big issues have plagued the 8mm for all these years: First, there are two different bullet diameters associated with German rifles .323 and .320 and that's not the end of it, other countries call .329 diameter 8mm. The other problem has been bullet availability. You could find two bullet weights in .323, a 170 round nose and a 175 spitzer. Then, just before the 8mm Rem. mag came out a 123 grain spitzer bullet came out, followed by a 220 grain spitzer and then the Remington round came out and a 180 grain bullet became available. These last two were a little tough for any non-magnum velocities, but if you needed penetration they were the ticket. Great discussion, glad to see the 8mm-06 cartridge mentioned, In some ways it was the most underrated hunting wildcat ever developed.

8mm-06 was a wild cat developed after WWII. Wilhelm Breneke developed the 8x64 in 1912 offered it to the German military they said no thanks and he released it on the commercial market for hunting. I was just looking at the older guns section of our gun store. I saw a gun that had a boyd stock. So it stood out. I started looking closer and I realized that this gun was a CZ but the strangest thing was the action looked just like a Mauser k98. Rifle it said 8mm-06 24 1/2 inch barrel. I started to piece together they had taken the sights off and there was a scope incl with the gun. Camouflage cheap, has a "W" on the cap,and looks nice though. I put it on their layaway program why did some more research. I'm a hand loader I know that it was going to be a hand load caliber and I didn't want this gem at such an affordable price of $299 to get away. I'm looking for a project done and I figured worst case scenario and I could be wrong I've got a check made k98 action to build a play rifle on. Which for 300 bucks is a little steep for just okay 98 action but those are going up in value as less and less around and they are solid so I can build a pretty heavy duty long range gun on it. I don't know the twist. It looks like it could be the original barrel but the barrel was turned down in two different spots and there are plugged holes where it looks like there was sights attached to that barrel so I'm guessing it's original. Everything was all reblued very nicely I don't understand the multiple turning down of the barrel broadcast like every when is 8 inches is turn down so you have three sections of barrel that are different diameters on the outside

8mm 06, great hog spanker for the swamps here in the south. Brass is easy to get, neck up that prolific 06 stuff and get the poor man's magnum. One thing about a mauser action, it is controlled feed, huge claw extractor makes it rum in any position in lncuding upside down! Strong and reliable. .323 cones in a few different projectiles and weights, one could even do hard cast I am guessing getting a mold made at a machine shop not too crazy expensive. Love some of the not so vouge cartridges like .300 Savage which almost became a military use but due to the steroer shoulder angle, complicated reloading reliability. It's loadable to .308 all day, with the .39 cal. Bullet offerings and new powders. My 2¢ worth, OG's rule like OC's (old cartridges)

In the mid sixties, on a hunt in the Upper Peninsula, my dad had a sporterized M98 and his friend Dick had a sporterized '03 Springfield. Both rifles had the same type aftermarket stock. In the pre-dawn darkness they got their rifles mixed up. After a few minutes Dick found me and said that he was having difficulty loading his '06 cartridge in the chamber. I knew that we immediately had to find Dad who had an 8 mm Mauser cartridge in the chamber of the '03 rifle. Firing it would have been a disaster. Later I had the Williams Gunsight Co. re-chamber the Mauser rifle to 8 mm/06 and I loaded ammo for it. Today it's a much better cartridge due to a wider selection of better bullets.

I was around gun shops for the "hot stove league" of cartridge discussions in the 1970's as my grandfather was an avid player. The 8mm was really held back by the American confusion with anything metric, and also the .318 vs .323 mess. The Germans switched the bore diameter (way before the World Wars in 1905) but that didn't stop people saying there were two 8mm calibers floating around and if you ID'ed your bore wrong you would kill yourself with an 8mm. It cursed the 8mm in America!

Can you do a segment on the French 7.5x54. A cartridge that was way ahead of its time and totally applicable today for hunting and self protection. Just not much brass....

Ryan, Jimmy and Mark great show. The 8x57 or the 8-06 are not getting attention in US just because nobody has paid to be done so. As all European calibres are downloaded at the factory, the publish data also downloaded and even SAAMI specs have special downed the allowed the max pressures. In US the hype and paid campaigns make things look good and desired. The 6x62mm Freres, 9,3x64mm Brenneke, 9,3x66mm Sako, 8,5x63 REB just to name a few, are almost unknown of the public just because nobody makes it great on the shows and the publication do not talk about it, just because they do not get paid to do so. The 8x68S is much older and powerful than a lot of US magnums, yet unknown and underrated. The hype of the short actions is a joke, talking about 0.025 of a second faster? Half an inch shorter? Keep up with your good show. Cheers

What about a wildcat like 22 cheetah, which if I'm remembering correctly off the top of my head is a necked down .308. Or a talk on parent cartridges, their commercial offspring (308 going into 243 and 7mm-08) plus the wildcat cartridges.

My Dad showed up one day with an 8mm Mauser that he bought in Nevada. It was made in about 1938 by the Czecholslovakian company that makes the modern CZ firearms made today. I thought about rechambering to 8mm06 but the gun has so much sentimental value because it was given to me by my Dad. I need to buy some modern 8mm Mauser ammo with none mercury primers so I can shoot it. .

You all missed out on the best part. Mr. Ackley wildcatted this wildcat, That 200 grain Acubond will do close to 3100 fps and higher BC than the 338. On the 7mm Mauser case head and 200 grain bullet, the 8mm AI (or somebody else's improvement, thank you Mr. Rocky) is the one to beat.

Do you know why the 8mm Mouser is more powerful than the 8-06? I seriously considered getting the 8-06 once but found out that is wasn't as powerful as the 8mm Mauser? Which is strange for me since the -06 case is larger.. Please also consider talking about the 10.3x68

You have bad information. 8mm-06 isn't loaded by any ammo manufacturer so it's handload only. You can load as hot as you like and it has a larger case volume than 8x57. Choose your powder carefully and work up a load to your liking. I'm getting 2840 fps with a 200 grainer. I don't think an 8x57 will top that.

It's funny how they describe the happy accident that .30-06 has the same rim diameter as the Mauser cartridge and nobody really mentions that the US adopted a Mauser rifle after discovering the Spanish Mausers were better than their Krag rifles in the Spanish-American war. And since the Spanish Mausers that Springfield copied (and paid licensing fees to Mauser) already used the 12mm rim diameter in their 7mm Mauser cartridge, there wasn't a huge reason to change it. Thus, the .30-06 shares a rim diameter with the Mauser cartridge because it was born from tinkering with a Mauser action. In a roundabout way, the 7mm or 8mm Mauser is the parent of the .30-03 and .30-06 cartridges.

…you seem to refer to the 8mm Mauser , presume you talking about the 8x57JS!? Hear in Europe this caliber is very popular still….probably behind the 30-06, 9,3x62 if we talk about European Moose hunting. It would be cool if you could do a comparison between the 8mm06, 8x57JS and maybe the 8x68s!! 👍

Nothing at all wrong with the 8mm(323cal) caliber. It just hasn't seen the love from the bullet manufacturers the .308cal and 338cal have seen. Before the 325WSM came out, I developed an 8mm Wildcat based on my Improved 7mm Dakota case. I named it "8mm Elkhamr" . Loaded using 200gr Nosler Accubonds at 3120fps, It's an Incredible round matching the 300Win mag ballistically, with the thump of a 338Win Mag using 225gr bullets!
