Despite looking like a burger exterminator, Tai Tuivasa manages to send UFC heavyweights into oblivion. With no foundational martial arts training he ascended to the top of the most prestigious weight class. Today we take a deep dive into the career of the Australian brawler, who traded bright prospects in rugby for a harsh prizefighter life.

This man is the archetypical brawler: Not too streamlined, not too refined but as sturdy as a bridge and as strong as a bull. If that isn't enough, though, when it's time, he's capable of firing off a barrage of straight accurate haymakers that can simply beat even the big guys to the ground...incredible.

I'm a casual runner. I do half marathons. Sometimes I'll use beer to carb up. Not the day before, but the day before the day before. The day before I'll be slightly hungover but full of carbs. Being hungover makes me a little extra tired, I'll spend the day hurting slightly but relaxed the night before a race I'll sleep like a baby. The next morning I'll be rested, ridiculously carbed up, ready to run 13 miles and still feel like I have gas left by the time I cross the finish line. I'm starting to get too old to drink all the time, I'm not in my early 20's anymore (was a bad idea even then haha), so I just drink strategically :)

A wonderful thing with Tai is that he would be just as happy back in Australia throwing a rugby ball around a park with family and friends and getting by out of the limelight. When you have a free mind and are fighting for the love of it it's all good fun. Evolved hugely as a fighter. Never going to be a submission specialist but with his power and striking skills he only needs reasonable ground defense. Typically modest Aussie lad !😎👍

He honestly shows great restraint. As soon as he sees his opponent is lights out he doesn't hurt them anymore while they're defenseless. Most fighters will feed them another 4 free fists until the ref jumps in. I think he would've beaten peter graham in his first fight if he'd pressed the attack, but i've only seen this much. It's incredible for a guy of his size to be throwing those flying knees so high and hard.

For people watching this and as an Aussie, it’s not rugby, it’s rugby league. There is a massive difference. Although he could have played both games. Still massive differences. I want to add, in rugby league, every single teams training involves boxing and wrestling training. Tai had also excelled. It’s a part of there training to implement tactics for tackling opponents

Why was the other fighter allowed to hammer fist the back of Tai’s head at 18:59? Shouldn’t he have lost a point?
@alessandragonzales8190
@alessandragonzales8190 2 жыл бұрын
The ref didn't call it, and the ref is the one who deducts points, not the judges. Not a great situation for sure - if blows to the back of the head were treated the same way as 12-6 elbows or grounded knees a lot of MMA matches would probably have ended differently. For example in Dustin Poirier's second fight with Eddie Alvarez, Eddie had Dustin in an awful position until he threw a 12-6 elbow. This caused the fight to reset on the feet and Dustin pretty much immediately obliterated Eddie's entire face, winning the fight by KO. Now imagine Ciryl Gane's back-of-the-head blow to Tai Tuivasa had been treated that way - Tai might have (though probably not) won the fight. EDIT: lol I just checked and it was actually the same ref in both fights, Marc Goddard

Love Tuivasa, but he just got exposed once again Saturday night. He's 8-5 in the UFC and the only guy of significance that he's beaten in five years is a Derrick Lewis. The Russians have his number and there is no way in hell he's gonna beat technicians like Gane or Stipe, and even a raw Francis will crush him. And a wrestler like Curtis Blades will have a field day with him. He'll enjoy a nice career, make some money, and I'll root for him all the way, but barring a complete collapse of the heavyweight division, he'll NEVER be champ.
