I have a question about this unit: how does it fare if, instead of headphones, it's plugged straight into a PA mixer for live use?

@@1man1guitarletsgo Experience, but not from a live performance perspective. I have the Amplug 2 Bass model that I will use to practice while I'm on my breaks at work, and I've plugged things up a few different ways just to see what it's capable of. I've used it with active and passive basses, with over ear and earbud headphones ranging from $15 to $150, a few Bluetooth speakers that have an aux input, and I've even run it at the end of my pedal board for when I've wanted to practice with my effects while still at work. At the end of the day, it is absolutely perfect for what it is designed for, but it still has limitations. The 3.5mm aux connection does not carry the signal at a high enough quality to do anything that I would want to consider live or production quality. That being said, I don't have a direct box for myself yet as I haven't quite had a need for one. If I do any recording, the XLR Out from the back of my amp head into my interface sounds way better than the Amplug 2, as it should. I tried a 3.5mm to 1/4 adapter from the Amplug to the interface just for the fun of it, and it's definitely not up to snuff. Now, the Amplug 3 line looks like it might be a bit more powerful, and my experience is still an opinion and anecdotal at best. Do a bit of your own research on direct boxes to see if one does fit your needs. Plus, if you are already getting an Amplug 3 for headphone practice and want to see what it can do on a PA, I'd say give it a try. Just make sure you have a backup plan, just in case it doesn't work the way you want it to.

@@The_Metal_Mechanic Thanks, that's a very comprehensive answer. I always gig with a proper amp, but in the search for ever-lighter gear, or as a backup if the amp fails, it would be great to plug into one device that sounds like an amp, and then from that into the PA. I did own a Behringer GDI-21, but it didn't do it for me. Maybe I should just get a a Tech 21 fly rig.

@@1man1guitarletsgo Yeah, as a bassist, the quest for lighter gear is an endless adventure that I definitely understand. I am mostly a bedroom/living room player, but when I jam with my brother I have a 2x10 cab with neodymium speakers that I have to haul over. It's not too heavy, but I will need more than that if I ever start gigging. Thankfully, the band that I jam with for fun every once in a while has a 4x10 cab with a pretty nice tube amp already at their jam room, so I only have to bring my basses and my pedal board. Makes things a lot easier.
