Sometimes flight recorders are the only way the victims' families will know what happened to the plane.
Subscribe to our channel! goo.gl/0bsAjO
Immediately following an airplane crash anywhere in US territory, the National Transportation Safety Board dispatches a team of investigators to survey the wreckage, gather information from the airline and from air traffic control, and retrieve the plane's so-called "black boxes."
These flight recorders - one stores cockpit audio recordings, the other stores airplane instrument data - are sent to NTSB's lab in Washington, DC, for analysis. There, officials listen to what are sometimes the pilots' final, panicked moments of life. They interpret not only what the pilots were saying before the crash but also any snaps, bangs, and alarms captured by the cockpit area microphone.
By combining those audio clues with data from the plane's instruments and sensors, as well as evidence from the scene, investigators can usually determine the cause of the crash, even in cases with no surviving witnesses.

yup and when a crash happens NTSB and NCIS are dispatched to the scene. Their goal find out why the plane crashed and recover all flight data to close the case. 900 crashes have been solved thanks to the Black Box.

Why not do both? Have the planes transmit data to a satellite and keep a flight recorder onboard in case the plane ceases transmitting data to the satellite. That way the onboard flight recorder continues recording data after data transmission has ceased.

idk if you realize how many flights there are per day, it's barely worth it to be partaking in this degree of transmission (that anyone technical could tap into and potentially mess with) because of the couple plan crashes that happen every year.. they can usually find the black boxes and it's likely better to invest in the technology to make them more easily locatable in the worst case scenario

@@matamorosa Alright armchair engineer, anyone on the planet can live stream VIDEO from their phone, you make it seem like this is some alien technology when we're talking about mb's of data. Outside the aviation industry, a black box usually means "a unit in which an unknown process takes place". With black boxes, you only know what you put in and what came out, not what happened in there. It's often used in software and sometimes in engineering.
@SaschaWagner
@SaschaWagner 8 жыл бұрын
It's exactly this. Wikipedia: "A black box is a device, object, or system whose inner workings are unknown; only the "stimuli inputs" and "output reactions" are known characteristics." In this case, maybe becaus you can't look into it without destroying it.

4:45 "black box" in engineering and science refers to a subsystem whose internal components are either unknown or irrelevant to the current application. Only the subsystem's behavior (i.e. its input/output response) is considered. That's why it's called a "black box", you don't have knowledge of the inside of the box, only the inputs and outputs.

Blackbox, that I learned at a technology university in the Netherlands, means that it is dark black that you don't know what processes are happening inside the box to process inputs and to give outputs. You give inputs to the blackbox and you get outputs coming out from the box. Now since it is black or a box that contains a mystery or unknown processes you need to find out what's happening inside the box that can explain the relationships between the inputs and the outputs. In reality, the box colour is orange because it needs to be easy to find after an accident.

To do that, the material the black box is made out of would have to be very light as well as very durable, and steel and titanium aren't exactly buoyant. There are very few light and strong materials out there able to withstand extreme force and heat, and even if such a material exists, it probably wouldn't be cost-effective to put one on every plane everywhere. And there's still the matter of the computer components storing information. We don't yet have the technology to make those lightweight yet.

You're still not considering the fact that these things are INSIDE the plane, not on the outer shell ready to be detached once they're in the water. When a plane crashes, there are usually large chunks of plane instead of a million tiny pieces. These planes are stable, not made of glass. The box couldn't just magically float out of rubble, it has to be attached well.

Also if the data is streamed in realtime, AI servers can detect if the pilot has done something unusual (like setting one of the engines to idle in case of a possible engine failure) and report it back to someone below and communicate to the pilots when a pan / mayday or critical flights are detected. That can solve probably most of human caused crashes.

obviously you don't know what your talking about, let me explain. A GPS, by definition is used to position the plane by triangulate the position using satellites. This requires a transponder in the aircraft, which by the way exists. This means when the plane crashes the GPS stops working. Before you say it, no the tower can not always see the plane. There is a lot of airspace that is only towered by center or radar services.

The modern Black Boxes were invented by David Warren. He came up with the idea shortly after investigating the Commet crash of 1953. Without this brilliant man’s ingenuity many aviation accidents would have gone unsolved. Because of his invention many tragedies involving commercial aviation have been solved and have drastically made air travel one of the safest forms of transportation in the world. We owe a great debt to this man for his work. ❤️

What's really cool is that for MH17, they were able to use the different locations of the 4 cockpit mics to triangulate the location of detonation of the missile relative to the cockpit. Essentially, the sound waves would hit each mic at a measurable different time.

here's the full NTSB report www.ntsb.gov/investigations/AccidentReports/Reports/AAR0404.pdf They address the design issue -- not a deficiency or flaw exactly, but a mismatch between the sensitivity of the rudder system and the training pilots received about that system.

That's incredibly dumb. That adds weight and cost. Airplanes need to stay as light as possible and adding a way to make power isn't necessary except in very rare instances.

You wouldn't be able to generate it indefinitely, as you would need two types of metal for the anode and the cathode. One of these would almost certainly corrode. But it would generate power for a certain amount of time, which may help in some cases.

Are you kidding me, Space-X can broadcast video feed from their rockets flying in space and we can't feed data in real time from aircraft on Earth. What century is the civil aviation flying in?
@AnmlPeeweeIsHere
@AnmlPeeweeIsHere 5 жыл бұрын
sent4dc Well there are a lot of aircraft flying globally. We'd need more stations and or we can use more satellites to monitor these planes real time. Im not sure how it would work but im certain its because of the amount of data that would have to be monitored just by one plane alone would be a lot, imagine over 5000.
@AnmlPeeweeIsHere
@AnmlPeeweeIsHere 5 жыл бұрын
sent4dc We'd have to have more people and more computers monitoring the data. Maybe we can devise a computer system that interprets data amd alerts personnel of any abnormality. A very basic idea but it can be a start to build upon.
@sent4dc
@sent4dc 5 жыл бұрын
@@AnmlPeeweeIsHere Well, so what that we have a lot of aircraft? It will obviously be a paid option that commercial airline companies will have to cough up some dough for. The government will probably have to launch a satellite or two to provide the data coverage over some distant areas in the Pacific and Indian oceans, but it's all doable. I'm really shocked that it hasn't been done already. As for the amount of data, then you would be surprised how much information one can put into just a few kilo-bytes of binary data. (Stuff like plane's unique ID, UTC timestamp of transmission, X-Y-Z: GPS coordinates of the plane + altitude, amount of fuel, other vital plane telemetry, last speech-to-text transcription from within the cockpit, etc.) So the on-board telemetry computer will record all this data and continuously transmit it, say once every minute or so. (Over time the frequency can be increased.) Such telemetry computer should have its own independent power supply and have a tamper-protection, and ideally be totally isolated from reach from within the plane itself. (Ideally located in such a place so that it was physically impossible to get to it while plane is in the air -- say, in the vertical stabilizer or underneath the fuselage. Such measure may be needed to prevent deliberate tampering with that transmitter by someone from the plane crew.) Also obviously such transmission should be properly encrypted and authenticated so that some rogue nation or terrorists weren't able to abuse it. Also keep the bulk of this data in the flight recorder. That's fine. It can be quickly retrieved once the last known plane location is obtained from the last data transmission. As for not having enough people to monitor it -- they don't have to monitor anything. All they need to do is store it. NSA style. (And storage is very cheap these days.) And only if the problem arises later on, they can retrieve the needed data and analyze it for a specific plane, for certain date and time. IDK, all this sounds like a no-brainer in 2019.
