If you listen closely enough to Radiohead and Hans Zimmer’s rework of “Bloom” for Blue Planet II, you can hear a really fascinating orchestral trick at work. They call it the “tidal orchestra” - it’s a musical effect created by instructing each player to play their notes only if the person next to them isn’t playing. The result is a randomly swelling and fading musical bed for the entire series that captures the feeling of ocean waves. It’s a captivating way to score a soundtrack for the ocean - but it also fits in with a long history of capturing randomness in music composition.

I feel like many of the viewers think that Hans Zimmer is the one that completely changed the song, it is different to the 2011 version, but if you watch the video of Thom playing it live in 2016 it's much more similar. I listen to this on repeat and cry. I cannot express how much I love the beauty of the ocean, how powerful it is yet so fragile, and this complete perfect expression of everything the water on our planet is, is astonishing. Thom and Johnny's musical genius combined with hanz zimmer is simply the greatest thing to happen to humanity. An angelic voice with the crashing of the waves, the chaotic rise and fall of the music is gorgeous and I refuse to listen to anything else.

I'm here for Radiohead but I got to give huge praise to BBC, they produce amazing nature series, I just finished Human Planet last week and it was superb.

I feel like Thom Yorke and Hans Zimmer didn't get a long very well. He never once looked at Hans. When speaking, Thom felt more comfortable looking at Jonny, which is someone he feels probably more comfortable with since they are in the same band together. He even interrupted Hans in the intro during the pointillism discussion. I don't think Thom was trying to be rude, but I can tell Hans was trying to be cool with it. At 2:15, right before the scene transitions, as Hans is talking, Thom glances up toward Johnny, like "Give me a break, dude". The main difference between the two can be seen at 3:37 when, again, Thom interrupts Hans to talk about the ocean. If you notice when Hans is talking about the ocean and it's shape, Thom quickly smiles and it goes away as soon as Hans stops talking about the ocean, but the more Hans keeps talking about the ocean, Thom's face lights up, which is when we go into the discussion of Thom describing his take on the ocean, which is more poetic than Hans' version of the ocean. Finally, during the final discussion, Thom is only looking at Jonny. If you look over at Hans, I think he's wondering why he isn't included in that conversation. It's like Hans isn't ever there. At the end, Hans gives an awkward smile and nods in agreement. He laughs only because Thom and Jonny are laughing. You can see him playing with his thumb and rubbing his ankle at the end. Kind of awkward all around.

Let's be honest: what Zimmer did with this was take the chords, rhythm and speed of Thom's live piano+loop version and give the piano parts to a string orchestra. Nothing much 'new' brought either melodically or rhythmically, just a generic 'lush strings' texture.

I just love when the orchestra starts playing one note at the beginning of the show for them to tune their instruments. I sometimes wish they can just keep doing it the entire show, I would be completely happy with it.

That original "Bloom" radiohead music was pretty crappy imo, the rework is like, 1 billion times better. It actually caused chills when the comparison clip entered.
