Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
Season 3 Episode 19
"The Mermaid"
First aired 29 January, 1967
Guest star: Diane Webber
Captain Crane discovers mermaid and brings her aboard Seaview. But her Merman is mad as hell and comes looking for his missing mate.
This episode uses footage from the movie "The Mermaids of Tiburon," a low-budget 1962 feature starring Ms. Webber. The episode marks the first appearance of a female (of any species) in season three, and possibly the last such appearance for the remainder of the series.
Observant Voyage fans will experience "Deja Voyage" when the Manfish - I mean, the Merman - crashes through a bulkhead.
This episode is a recording from a recent HDTV broadcast of a newly transferred and restored film. The episode has been shortened by the rights holder to the current standard length for one-hour episodes through the use of cuts and increased frame rate. Additional audio and video augmentation by TooleMan TV, 2023.

Hi Darlene, I have mermaid pictures and figurines around my flat, the Pre-Raphaelite artist Waterhouse mermaid is in my bathroom, so for 2 pins I too would have 'jumped ship' along with Captain Lee Crane. Loved mermaids ever since I was a child.

Oh and Darlene, Diane Webber portrayed the mermaid in this episode, her tail is exactly the same as that Ann Blyth had worn in "Mr. Peabody & The Mermaid."

It always gets me that when someone not least the Captain says they saw something they always get laughed at, as if they haven't seen some weird stuff already.🤔
@gorillaau
@gorillaau 10 ай бұрын
Everyone has their memories reset between episodes. This must be a painful experience as we never see it and they never talk about it. Not remembering the weird stuff is convenient from a syndication perspective, the series can go in any order and it still works. Skip an episode or even half a dozen and you haven't missed any character progression, because there isn't any. It's like a a sci-fi based sit-com.

@@gorillaau That's just how TV was done in those days. You'd have an occasional two-part episode, and even, rarely, a three-parter, but story arcs didn't really become a thing until the '80s, and weren't commonplace until the '90s.
@gorillaau

@johnbgood52 I was being facetious. I think it may have been Doctor Who that first had recurring characters, and recalled the last encounter. The Deleks and cybermen were always recognised on sight by the Doctor and companions, on subsequent encounters.

There were a couple more that I can't think of. It all began with a movie from 8-10 hosted by Svengoolie. Lol. As much out of this world stuff these characters have encountered, they don't believe there could be a mermaid. Lol.

FOOTNOTE : some, if not most of captain crane's mermaid chase scenes were lifed from another completely different movie called THE MERMAIDS OF TIBURON ( didn't anyone notice she's toppless during the chase, but suddenly sporting plastic seaweeds coverings when she's captured ) FOOTNOTE 2 : if anyone's interested the MERMAIDS OF TIBURON was re -released a few years later under the title AQUA SEX with new footage of more nearly naked mermaids except the new mermaids had legs !! The back story was the movie producer had only a few fish tails leftover from the first film and so made do without them ! This movie is out on DVD ,but i don't know about the re release is . Happy mermaid watching 😊😊😊

@AdmiralNelson1000
@AdmiralNelson1000 5 ай бұрын
Yes, they had the usual "TV budget," the SF shows of the day had to spend the same amount as regular TV shows despite need for more. And budget might get trimmed if ratings weren't high. Season 3 here is now confined to the sub, guest casts down to a minimum. Voyage's biggest budget was issued the previous year. They couldn't spend like that again. However, the Monsters -- I'll support their tailors-- looked wonderful. Probably the best in prime time for a long time. Pre CGI, there were few rivals even through the 70s.

As farfetcged as mermaids might be, the topic takes on some reality. The nuclear missile at the bottom of the Pacifice Ociean has some historical truth and the U.S.s destruction or defusing of it little know to the U.S.S.R. There is a faire degree in the interactions of the crew with their superiors (we're on break) the banter between Baseheart and Hedison, and even Dowdell, rolling his eyes, you could read his thoughts. More than a few chuckles in this episode. Miss those days and those times. Merci

The only episode in the 3rd season that features a woman, even though some scenes of her were stock footage. There is a rumour that Irwin Allen was asked why women are no longer cast in the series. He answered the budget would not allow for women to be featured. He was asked to explain and Allen's reply was "make up, hair , and wardrope. That costs time and money".

Indeed, the show was under a lot of pressure that year -- costs, ratings, production pace. A major move to snare a Junior Demographic and their Fathers I'm guessing. Hence the move to keep things hopping and for providing lots of pyrotechnics.
@AdmiralNelson1000
@AdmiralNelson1000 5 ай бұрын
Oh yes, "PS". I'm wondering about that long held report that the issue over women on the show was just about money. Only clue I have to additional matters came from interviews with Ray Didsbury ("Crewman Ray") and Del "Kowalski" Monroe. They claimed that the "demographic" audience being courted in season 3 "didn't want 'em" (women), seemingly preferring being underwater with no "romance", just on going combat, mostly with creatures. [Filmfax, Starlog interviews].

I love this show but yes, that's true. David Hedison claimed to have been exasperated with the kids show approach too, as did "the Chief". "Kowalski" didn't mind either course. David Hedison and Terry Becker later "reconciled" with the show, acknowledging how much it did mean to us "easy to please" kiddies back in the day.

other Irwin Allen shows started out serious, with high aspirations. Lost In Space had a really great pilot episode, but eventually it devolved to giant talking vegetables, which are kind of entertaining in it's own way. The Allen got into disaster movies in the 70s.

When I was a kid I loved this show. My parents weren't quite as enthusiastic as me. I couldn't understand why they didn't love this show. Watching it again all these years later I realize that perhaps my parents were right. This is a really stupid television program, and it just didn't age well over the decades.

Perhaps a harsh assessment. Look at it this way --- a space age update on the old Saturday Matinee serials. A lively art form in its own way. Not for everybody of course. But more colorful, more toys, great model work and overall SFX and fine music. One can take this two ways, but "they'll never make 'em like this again."
