When I was a kid I was the biggest fan of this show. Eventually my folks gave me a model of the Seaview submarine for Christmas one year; I think I was about nine years old. I remember my father helping me with much of the gluing and painting. Kept that old model around for years, until…, while I was away overseas in my third or fourth year on active duty in the navy, when my sister’s young dog, Mr. Peabody, got into my stuff and really managed to chew the heck out of the front end of it. Really mangled the hell out of the bow and whatever those really cool wing-things are called on either side of the bow. My sister felt absolutely terrible about it. I told her forget about it cause it now looked like it just got done battling one of the sea monsters or giant heads of lettuce creatures the crew seemed to find themselves confronting every other week or so on the show !

I was an addict of this series in the first few years but the quality did fade over time. That seems to happen with Irwin Allen productions. It's like he loses interest. He did the same thing with Lost in Space and then the Time Tunnel. Great starts and then after a while, silly and sometimes ridiculous. This was one of the last episodes, so...not as good, but it's true that the actors knew their roles so well they could play along and make it work even though it wasn't very convincing on any level.

A....flying sub..? What the...? I mean how is that possible? It could never happen - how ridiculous! But when this was my favourite TV programme, when this was the absolute highlight of the week that I'd waited another seven days to see the next episode, a flying sub was the most natural invention in the world. Ok, I was 5 and then 6 years old at the time, and I counted down the days of each week until the next 7.15 on a Sunday evening in 1967 and '68 to see what was in store for the crew of the Seaview. This was wonderful stuff, and all those monsters and aliens really existed of course! Still brilliant. I watched these while in Canada - coming back to GB to find Sci-Fi programmes made with puppets made me feel that I'd landed in a country of Luddites! Admiral Nelson and Captain Kirk...I mean Crane...You'd trust your life in their hands!
