Since they presumably had no temporal shielding, they and their occupants were instantly returned to Voyager when the timeship erased itself from history.

If there was a major change that should have reverted Voyager back into an intact state at any point between leaving and the end of Part 2, they may have been entirely erased because the point they would be reverted back to a spot that was temporally immutable! Just imagine how much more unstable Janeway could be if she realized that!

I'm almost certain it was executives that demanded that they reset things completely. The ability to explore Voyager's concept to its fullest would be a dream for writers, and I'm sure the actors appreciated getting to portray new dimensions to their characters. 'Year of Hell' sounds like a great creative endeavor, but one tainted by meddling.

The weirdest part about Captain Red's obsession with bringing that one colony back is that...his wife would still be dead even if he did. It's been 200 years. With no evidence to the contrary, we assume they have a roughly human lifespan, so she still would have died of old age ~100 years ago.

I'm sure I won't be the only one to point it out, but this was originally conceived as an entire season. "Year of Hell" meaning the entire year of stories. Unfortunately, serialized stories were too crazy at this point and they didn't have the fight that DS9 did. While I love Voyager, there are many examples of this. Plenty of missed opportunities. There is another 2 part episode coming up later that's pretty much a "See, this is what we could have given you!" moment. I very much look forward to seeing your thoughts when that one arrives.

I gotta say, there would be more interesting bits to drag out a whole year. I usually skip these two episodes as they're so long and suffer from bad pacing. I'd rather see them set down on a planet someplace, something like that human colony where the '37:s were found. A whole year of misery would be a little much methinks.
@windgraceproject
@windgraceproject Жыл бұрын
@@nisselarson3227 That would have been interesting. Maybe they could have split the story into a few different parts. The Paris and Chakotay being captured on the ship, most of the crew on a planet trying to survive, and a few core people on Voyager trying to find allies and repair the ship?

Something I already said about Season 4 of Enterprise that also could've worked for Voyager are short story arcs. Basically a handful episodes that tell a connected, overarching story. Gives more room to move the plot and allows for cliffhangers, but doesn't run into the risk of a continuous story that missing one episode leaves holes in the entire season. Sort of that middle ground between standalone episodes and a big overarching story. Put multiple of them into a season, with the option of having one be referenced by a later one. Like turning each season into 3-4 miniseries.

I think Year of Hell is fascinating for historical reasons. It almost feels like a failed study for Battlestar Galactica. The genocide, the relentless opponent, the desperate attempt to retain the old values in the face of growing catastrophe, the beauty shots of a messed up hero ship. Almost like it's saying "Here. This is what you could have if you didn't try and cram everything into episodic storytelling." It runs alongside the final seasons of DS9. And three year after Voyager ends, Ronald Moore is free, and Galactica bursts onto the scene.

Year of Hell has the mother of all rest buttons I think in the whole of the Trek cannon but it does have some of the best Janeway moments in Voyager’s series run. If ever there was a captain that would go down with their ship it would be Janeway. I think one of the concepts for the series finale was Janeway going down with Voyager in order to send the crew home which I also think was Kate Mulgrew’s preferred end for the character.

So the final attack on the sonic screwdriver took place on Day 226… so why isn’t this episode called “Eight Months of Hell” or “Two Thirds of a Year of Hell”!? I’d have loved to have seen how Janeway convinced those two aliens species to join her little fleet… she turns up at their planets in a ship with more holes in it than a colander with a skeleton crew that includes a hologram, a Borg, a blind guy and a hedgehog, telling some batshit insane story about a guy on a giant ship who’s altering time such that none of them remember any of it. Seems legit… 10:52 Nice that even with all the damage Voyager has taken, the mood lighting is still fully functional.

I think one large misinterpretation of the episodes end is the warning that history will repeat its self. No it won't. A big point Time Adolf made was he neglected his family for his work. But at the end we see him put his work aside to spend it with his family. So the implication is in the new timeline he neglects his work to spend time with his family.

Hey! I'm a named ensign! Don't eliminate me, I'm ... wait ... get away from me with that plot device ... no ... please ... [gaaak] [THUD] (Crap, I forgot to leave instructions to turn off Patreon contributions in my will.) Seriously, thanks for banging the "consequences" drum, though I don't expect it will make any difference. One of the reasons that DS9 is so loved is that very thing. Something that happens in one episode can have consequences through the rest of the series. And watching Captain Pike deal with the knowledge of what's to come helps humanize him. Yet in both cases we can miss some episodes and still continue with no problems. Not that it matters now. It might have been a concern when everything was on broadcast TV. Now we can watch missed episodes whenever we want. Which is exactly what I'll do with Picard season 2. Eventually. Probably.
@Unlimited_Lives
@Unlimited_Lives Жыл бұрын
I think I'll probably end up making a video about this eventually. The fact we keep touching on it in the comments probably means it'd be a good topic. I think it might be interesting to explore how viewing habits have changed due to the advent of on-demand services, and the fragmentation of target demographics now that everybody has a portable screen. I think if Voyager were made today, without the constraints of live TV and being told it must appeal to all ages, it would be a very different show. Whether it would have been better is questionable, as I'm not convinced Discovery or Picard benefitted from Klingon nipples and swearing, but that's another argument.

How does the time not passing on the time ship thing even work? Time clearly still passes outside the time ship. And since they've been on the time ship for 200 years, even if they restore the Krenim Empire back to 100%, their families would be dead of old age. And is the ending with Annorax with his wife taking place in the present or 200 years ago?
@alexv1129
@alexv1129 Жыл бұрын
I think the implication with the Timeship is that it itself essentially exists outside of time while it is active. Pedant had a great point, about how digestion would work in a place where time was "frozen" as such. So they've spent 200 years trying to set time the way they want it to be - although, there does not seem to be much implication as to what/when his original timeline was. It feels to me like they've "spent 200 years" trying to fix roughly *this* point in time, and so I think the ending is essentially, the present.
@Unlimited_Lives
@Unlimited_Lives Жыл бұрын
They exist isolated from time, but still moving forward in it. There's no aging so no entropy, except they're using energy so must need fuel. They're restoring a timeline, but there's no hint that they can go back, so a 100% restoration would still mean all their families, and anybody they've ever known outside of the crew, are dead. The whole thing falls apart under scrutiny, which is one of the reasons why I don't care for time travel stories. I've said before that the only show which really does them right is Doctor Who, and that works precisely because it doesn't give a fuck.

The final scene of the computations on the padd, suggest the writers were unwilling to just reset. They had to suggest the events were still a possibility, and there may have been a loop. Regarding the year aspect, there was no way this could have been an entire season. Audiences would not have tuned into a show so grim and full of despair. "Only essential staff..." I was expecting a Neelix joke. But no, poor Harry. I'll take one crack at trying to understand the inner working of the Krenim time weapon... Everything it hits gets erased from time, it never existed. Like the entire Garenor species it wiped out from the timeline last episode. And the reason that temporal incursion failed to restore the Krenim Imperium was... Voyager developing temporal shieldng only a few hours before the incursion? How would that even affect the history of that sector of space? Also: if everyone aboard the Krenim screwdriver ship is protected from space-time, why does Annorax need to keep the lock of his wife's hair in a temporal stasis field? And why does he even have a lock of her hair anyway? And does he send his chef down to planets he plans to wipe out to collect some local delicacies first?
@mb2000

I think Voyager having temporal shields when it shouldn’t have as far as Annorax is concerned means that either it wasn’t factored into his calculations or those shields made Voyager be like a rock in the river that is time, time had to flow around Voyager instead of the ship being swept along with everything else. Maybe? I don’t know 😂
@Norvo82
@Norvo82 Жыл бұрын
@@mb2000 Maybe, but Voyager is not native to this quadrant, it had zero influence on or involvement with the development of the species in Krenim space until only a few months ago. Sure, I knew it would get reset to the status quo at the end, but it was nice seeing actual development in the situation and characters, even if it was later erased. They do it again in a later episode with a different plot (probably more than once, now I think about it). I get the feeling some of the writers wanted to have more development but were required to keep everything stupidly status quo. I wonder if it would be done differently now, with our season-long storylines?

It was a shame that Year of Hell turned out to be so inconsequential. One poignant highlight of that episode for me was the goodbye moment between Janeway and Tuvok. The filming, performances, tone and music of that scene were genuinely heartrending - and then it all went away at the end of the episode. Interesting how TV show structures have moved on: 1997 - Paramount TV producers: "Don't have consequences! We need to ensure viewers aren't shocked or upset by the story if they miss a week." 2013 - HBO Producers: "So this week's episode is called "The Rains of Castamere"."

In Battlestar Galactica, he achieved his dream of defiling the ship permanently over time lol. he only got to beat up Voyager for this special occasion before it was reset.

The sideburn wigs are just triangular tribbles. They could do the same for moustaches, but everybody would look like Mario.

Your reaction was basically the same as everyone else's at the time. This *could* have been an impactful story with consequences for the characters but everyone knew it was just going to be reset button time so, at the end no one cared. This story was screaming for more time to unfold. Apart from more satisfying endings, perhaps have Chakotay and the other time ship crew finally get through to Clarence, convincing him to let his obsession go, and reset the timeline back to something better. Have Voyager and the other ships that were shielded, survive to tell their story. Voyager going back to pick up its crew, the ones that survived at any rate. ANYTHING would probably have been better. The people I was with all noticed the same thing, the time ship had a lot of B5 assets in it, this was due to the CGI company (Foundation Imaging?) being fired from B5 and getting the CGI gig at Voyager. The number species were retreads of the Shadows, their ships were altered Vorlon craft etc.

Oooh! I wasn't aware that there were actual CGI shenannigans going on in the background of the show's production. That's fascinating data!

His not wrong. Had complexed me also I enjoyed this story but the ending was so unfortunately bad. They had so much to apply yet hit the reset. Even so we don't see space dog. Nor the ship. What time we live in 😔

I had time constraints on this one I'm afraid (busy week so it had to be done early) but Space Dog will return soon.

This was supposed to be a full season but corpo interference and budget almost completely nuked it. This would have made an insanely great arc. We never got a good arc since the Dominion War until the Xindi arc in Enterprise. Truly bloody sad, mate.

I’m one of those folx that’s still waiting for JJ’s bulls**t Kelvin timeline to be repaired & for Vulcan to get unblowed up, so I’ll have to dispute your opinion o these two eps. And frankly, we got what you wanted by way of ENTERPRISE. They did the year of hell.

Blame Rick Berman and the execs at Paramount for the reset. Rick didn't even want a two parter. This is an incredible two parter and is what Voyager should have been from the start, but nope. Reset button it is

I never cared much for the Year of Hell. I don’t mind Voyager undergoing some trials, but with all the buildup, so much feels rushed and pointless. I’m usually more a fan of time shenanigans episodes, but this one? Probably my personal least favorite. Still hate every Mirror Universe episode and 99% of all holodeck episodes more though.

Pretty much 100% Rick Bermans fault it was a two parter with a reset. They tried to do a season arc without a reset button but he's all "nope"

Meh; more to do with how the series was required to adhere to what the exec's at UPN wanted; a lot of good series were curtailed or ruined by that failing network. Berman was in a less than ideal situation with crooks like Les Moonves to deal with, yet still managed to give us plenty of great TV before a poor timeslot for Ent', X doing poorly at the box office & Moonves's meddling killed the franchise in 2005.

I don't understand your gripe against time travel stories. A story is made by characters, not plot. These characters did experience those things and we saw it, sure, the characters forgot it all but we didn't. Time travel stories, like any other, are about the characters, not the results. The fact we didn't have any follow up is a shame but that doesn't erase what we saw these characters do in these scenarios.
@Wixiban1980

It’s the consistent use of the reset button, one of the reasons many characters experienced barely any development from Caretaker to Endgame.
@Unlimited_Lives
@Unlimited_Lives Жыл бұрын
Precisely this. Time travel all you want as long as it matters. You say it doesn't erase anything, but that's literally what it's doing. The experiences and growth from that year are gone. I agree that these stories are about the characters, and the characters at the end of this two parter have grown in zero ways. That's just wasteful. It could have been a trigger for Paris learning the importance of duty above personal attachment, but now it won't because it didn't happen. It could have been an opening for Janeway to discuss why she was willing to martyr herself, but now it won't because it didn't happen. A reset isn't an ending; it's the absence of one. Any time travel episode that ends in a reset is essentially the novelty "alternate reality" episode that sitcoms trot out when they can't think of a original idea. It's one rung above a clip show.

You’re wrong. You misunderstood the meaning of the end. The whole point is that it DID matter. Everything mattered. Destroying the Time Ship didn’t JUST reset everything. It CHANGED history. The Captain got a second chance. The panning into his research wasn’t meant to imply it was starting again. It was meant to imply he left it on the table, literally and figuratively This is important because if means he never started his crusade in the first place, never tried to tinker with time, never ends up killing his wife and basically eliminated the Crinim time science as a whole. It mattered because it REMOVED the whole time manipulating that was done.
