Voyagers of the Pacific Luau at the Royal Kona | Kailua-Kona

We rang in our first day on the Big Island with a luau in Kailua-Kona. What a show! The Voyagers of the Pacific Luau is held at the Royal Kona Resort in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. It was an incredible show with delicious food, and getting to experience a bit of the culture we were stepping into was amazing. Welcome to Hawaii!

We went at the end of October into early November. We had some rain but not enough to stop us exploring.

Those sounds were so ridiculously funny that I had to look up what a Coqui Frog was... turned out they were not even from Hawaii, but are a native species of Puerto Rico, another US tropical paradise These frogs were introduced to Hawaii by accident in the 1980s (Think sewer gator type situation), but because they have no natural predators in Hawaii, they were able to spread through the island so fast so wide that their population density is now more than twice as high as they are in their native Puerto Rico, and are considered to be pests in Hawaii that threaten the local ecosystem... which they never could have done on their own considering that the two islands are literally an ocean and a continent apart. As opposed to their newly colonized Hawaii, the Coqui are not in anyway a negative figure in Puerto Rico, in fact since the pre-Columbian times the native Taino people of Puerto Rico had been using the Coqui as a good luck charm to represent longevity, and even today the Coqui remains one of the cultural symbols of Puerto Rico (Like the bald eagle of America, or turkey, per Ben Franklin) ... yet ironically, compared to their prosperous Hawaiian cousins, in Puerto Rico scientists are concerned that their population is in decline due to habitat loss caused by urbanization Man, what havoc human activities can wreak sometimes LOL
