Whats sadder is that Midna implies that she loves link. “Link I- see you later” She also says see you later when her and link both know, that’s a complete lie. She destroyed tue mirror to stop any incidents like that from ever happening again. At the cost of breaking the connection of the Twilight Realm and Hyrule. So we never got to see Lidna. The mirror is also a great representation of our hearts. Showing the bond and love between link and midna. But when midna leaves forever, the mirror fittingly shatter because of her tear. Just like our hearts

The secret ending for botw is more emotional in the Japanese version. In the Japanese version of botw links adventure log is more of a journal or diary showing more emotion from him. Once you finish the main quest of collecting links memories, in his adventure logs he states "I want to see the princesses smile again, with these eyes of my own." Which Link sees at the secret ending.

Midna’s farewell is impactful but I also think the ending of Twilight Princess is elevated even further by getting to see where everyone is at in the credits scenes, particularly the fact that the Ordon kids are finally returned home to their parents, escorted by our boy Colin who’s geared up with a sword and shield showing how he really learned the meaning of courage from Link. Chef’s kiss.

I have long believed that Twilight Princess is the most cinematic Zelda game. Other titles may have more cutscenes or prettier graphics, but only Twilight Princess was able to combine the dialogue, the music, and even the editing at times to make Midna a fully-fleshed out character that you come to care about. And of course that is also what makes the ending so emotional. I don't think you can go wrong with Twilight Princess or Link's Awakening at number 1, but Twilight Princess is my personal choice.

Something I love about Zelda games as I get older is how so many of them have bittersweet endings. The stories always end on the right side and are happy ones, but it never lets you forget the world has changed as a result, as have you, and that means you will often have lost something in the process. I find this very relatable as I go through life.

When Light Dragon comes to aid Link in the final battle, I’d asked myself a question during the 3rd phase: “Did she come back and maybe Draconification hasn’t removed everything that is Zelda?” I would strongly believed it is her love for her knight is what drove her dragon instinct/consciousness in saving Link from falling and aiding him against the Demon Dragoon. And we all seen that when her powers is activated when the one she loves is threaten in Breath of the Wild’s final memory.

It’s odd because as I watched your list unfold I couldn’t remember what games were left after TP, but LA was the most impactful for me not only for its ending but as a whole. The music and harmonies, the weird eccentric gameplay, the mini games and anime looking selfies, the Nintendo cameos. It all culminated in an ending that made me mourn for these little pixels. I cried both over my DX version and the Switch one haha I hope they do more wacky and impactful stuff like that in the future

i feel like if totk ended with zelda still a dragon, it could have set up an interesting sequel in a world far in the future, where link reincarnates, but there is no new zelda since the old one is technically still alive (so theres like a lacking element of wisdom to aid the protags, they have no idea what to do or something). maybe she dies at some point or in the end to set up a new incarnation

Zelda is never a reincarnation if we're following Demise's Curse from SS (common misconception tho). He calls out 'the blood of the goddess and the spirit of the hero' specifically. That means that there could be a future Zelda post-TotK if the one in-game was still a dragon, they would just need to be someone of royal blood (who would, by pure coincidence, be called Zelda).

Link's Awakening for me is the most rogue and just pure "art" Zelda has ever tried to be. In the way that it is just pure passion and emotion fueling the gameplay and story. It probably has something to do with the development of it starting out as a passion project and experiment by Koizumi and the Link to the Past team. Koizumi wanted to be a film director initially, Tezuka cites Twin Peaks as an influence in the game, that is not the kind of story you usually see in a Nintendo game, or a video game, period.

@@d3va383 How was it not undercut? What parts were good? You're entitled to your opinion but you should be able to coherently express (at least) a reason for it or forfeit any pretense that it has any bearing on reality. They undercut Zelda's sacrifice because despite setting up the cost of the turning into a dragon (which to be fair: was interesting, dramatic, and said a lot about her character) no such mechanism was ever even hinted at to turn her back- quiet the contrary in fact, it is explicitly stated that there is no way back, that's what made it so dramatic! To simply undo that, let alone without explanation in such a way as to erase any consequences is baffling. It means that there was no cost, the sacrifice didn't actually mean anything beyond what Zelda assumed it meant with her incorrect information. Sure, Zelda would have done it even if there really wasn't a way back but there is, so Mineru was just wrong and we thought about it for no reason. And what for? Why make Mineru a liar on top of the worst sage in the game? So we can get the screen cap of Zelda smiling for the ending! Why worry about the consequences of our actions or suffer a moment in sacrifice to a greater cause? These things don't matter! A furry ghost will magic you back to your old self and you will not have aged so much as a day or suffered a single ill effect (except for link repeatedly hitting you with a sword for scales). It's cheap, it's just like Ganondorf, all surface level with nothing deeper or even coherent going on under the surface. Sure it feels nice but is it actually? Do you like it for a meaningful reason or do you like it because it's a pretty scene and Zelda looks nice in the scene?

1 thing important to note about Skyward Swords ending. Link and Zelda survey the surface from atop the giant Goddess statue, the completed Triforce floating behind them...and they contemplate staying together on the surface. This will lead into 3 major events happening. 1. The surface will be repopulated with humans directly from Zelda and Links genes 2. The Royal family will be created from this union. 3. People will go after the Triforce which is out in the open and the light spirits will banish them to the twilight realm. The backstory of Twilight Princess! For these reasons, even beyond Fi's(PHAI in japanese) farewell, SS's ending is my favorite. It sets up so much.

I feel like the main thing missing from both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom's endings is that bittersweet feeling. In all the great ones: Wind Waker, A Link Between Worlds, Twilight Princess, Link's Awakening, you have to say goodbye to something meaningful at the end and part ways with it. And you never feel ready for it. There's the ghosts (the champions and Mineru) in Botw and Totk, but they were already dead lol. The lack of a strong story focus means Link is alone most of the time, which makes the endings feel less impactful imo

To me, the world disappearing in LA is very similar to waking up from a dream you really don’t want to wake up from. Link and the Wind fish were dream sharing after Link fell into a coma and the only way he could wake up from his coma was to wake up the wind fish, which caused the dream and everything in it to vanish like a literal dream does….except he was also dream sharing with a seagull who became Marin in his dreams. A whole society doesn’t disappear when Link wakes up, it is the dream world where none of the characters are real he wakes up from.

Every Zelda game with memorable characters can land the tearful goodbye, showing all the people Link saved, maybe setting Link up for the next adventure/a date. It would deserve some points for that (setting up memorable NPC for example), but it's rather common. Only two games from the high ranked list try for more: Wind Waker and a Link between Worlds. Both have a lot common in the ending: active non-Hero characters, a twist or two, an unexpected wish, a 'sympathetic' villain, and a general theme. WW has a more universal theme, but loses points for a more arbitrary execution (ah, see Ganon, he came out of nowhere and touched the Triforce first. Also Ganon's speech is bunk, maybe that's intended). So I'd go 1. ALBW. 2. WW. (long distance) 3. Link's awakening (places below are all rather close).

And in all that time what did he do for the Gerudo? Move them to Hyrule Castle? Give them more resources (food, shelter, etc) to help with the deadly winds of the desert? No. He did nothing for them because he didn’t give a damn about them. The “coveted winds of Hyrule” bit is a poor attempt to justify his horrible actions.

Link's Awakening isn't actually that sad when you look at it from a mature standpoint. In a dream, if a character is not an avatar of the dreamer, then they are simply the dreamer's mind's representation of a real person, or an amalgamation of people and personality traits they have previously encountered. Either way, they don't have a point of view or free will. I'm convinced that Koholint Island was only a concept to begin with, a concept experienced by the Windfish and others who were pulled into it's dream(Link and Marin), and the invader(Nightmare). Nightmare is the only canon death in the game(assuming he's sentient), as both Link and Marin(the seagull) woke up. In my mind, the ending isn't about an island full of sentient characters ceasing to exist. It's about three unlikely friends sharing a fictional adventure together and Link having the courage to help the other two awaken to reality once more instead of perpetually living in that fantasy to their own detriment. In my opinion, the latter is what Nightmare represents. But despite only being a dream, Koholint Island was not meaningless. It helped them all explore real concepts, some of them real to the Zelda canon, and others as real as me and those reading this. Maybe they even learned some things about themselves. And because the dream is over, Link, The Windfish, and Marin the Seagull can continue with their life, making new and real(to the zelda canon) experiences. Just like Link, Marin, and the Windfish had to move on from the dream, we too have to move on from our playthrough of Four Swords Adventures(or maybe a campaign of Dungeons and Dragons) with our friends. But the memories can still have meaning, just like Koholint island.
