VP at Major News Outlet Loses Job After Walmart 'Skip-Scanning' Scandal

The Rio Rancho Police Department responded to a Walmart in New Mexico after an alleged shoplifting incident involving a news executive. According to police, two boys were seen knocking over store displays and consuming unpaid Monster Energy drinks, which they then hid on a shelf. When officers arrived and approached the boys, they were directed to their father, Patrick Ethridge, 47, who was at the self-checkout registers. Ethridge, who served as Executive Editor and Vice President of The Albuquerque Journal, was allegedly "skip-scanning" items, bypassing payment for some goods. The family was escorted to the store's loss prevention area, where all three received shoplifting citations. Following the incident, Ethridge reportedly left his position at the newspaper.

The kids knocking over merchandise and drinking energy drinks is what got the dad caught. the scanners in Walmart use AI but it's easy to circumvent it as the dad showed with his scanning technique (which is why Walmart is considering going back to having cashiers). If it weren't for the kids getting the family scrutiny the employees probably would not have cared or noticed. So that's karma for you, raise bad kids, lose 6 figure job.

To be honest, Asset Protection at Walmart/Sam's Club is a joke. Worked security at a Sam's Club. I stopped a lady from pushing out a cart I knew contained unpaid merchandise. The following day, the Asset Protection regional supervisor of Sam's Club told the security company I was not to work at that store going forward. During my time working there, I prevented thousands of dollars of unpaid products from going out the door. True story!!
