what if someone was in a coma for 30 years and then wakes up and hears the word iphone and thinks cool virtual reality is now mainstream .but then gets disappointed when its just a small rectangular screen

That is very interesting thought :)

40 years from the founding of VPL research and the release of the 1st Macintosh in 1984 to the release of Apple Vision Pro today.. seems strangely... lethargic

It does only before you realize the incredible amount of progress in hardware. When VPL was around, their devices were running at VGA resolution (around 300,000 pixels) and often below 10 frames per second, displaying very primitive graphics. Modern headsets often display 10 million pixels per eye, often at 100 frames per second. That's not only 600 times more data being transferred in terms of pixel per second, but also overwhelmingly more computing power required to render the graphics. The displays back then also had incredibly dull colors and limited color palette and very low brightness compared to what's now possible with OLEDs. Modern headsets also use much more advanced lens, some rely on inside out tracking and there are so many more innovations that were simply not possible back then due to the lack of sufficient display or computing technology. It's pretty common in the history of mankind that some devices are theorized or dreamt of long before they actually become possible to build. Such was the case with rockets and airplanes, robots, steam machine and many other things.

Great video and the soundtrack. Apple went far to invent these goggles, just to arrange Windows across the space around user. And that's just because they don't want to improve their Window Manager in the MacOS. Haha, at least my friend is still complaining about Window Manager (I'm used to it after decades of macos usage)

Glad you enjoyed the video! Yeah Window Manager needs some improving on the MacOS :)

because it cost $250.000,- back in the day and VPL wasn’t the first that honour goes to Ivan Sutherland and Bob sproull who made the sword of Damocles in 1968 Nealy 2 Decades prior to VPL did
