Regardless of whether the source is trustworthy, torrents rely on a peer-to-peer network of everyone trying to download the file and share it at the same time this means that everyone's IP address is being seen in the pool. All the copyright holder has to do is download the torrent(which can be automated by bots) and see everyone who's downloading, uploading, AND HOW MUCH they're sharing providing them with a wealth of information which can be forwarded to your ISP. This is where a VPN comes into play. By funneling your traffic from your Internet service provider to the VPN service provider and then out of their servers, you mask your IP address with one of many VPN public IP addresses encrypting all traffic in such a way that even your ISP do not know where, when, OR WHAT you're downloading and uploading but rather how much data is traveling Which is why you pick a VPN with an "Audited" No Log Policy making it harder to track since there is no record of where the IP address originated from. I've been torrenting for almost 20 years and have never used a VPN. Not received any form of penalty by the authorities or my ISP whatsoever (in the UK). I'm pretty sure the only reason why people DO get prosecuted is if they continuously SEED as that is a means of unlawful redistribution of property. But if you download and immediately stop the torrent from downloading/uploading, you should be completely fine as it is for most likely personal 'consumption'/use.

Some people here are writing comments like "you don't need VPNs unless you are in ~ insert country with authoritarian regime ~." That is completely untrue. ​There's several country's ISPs - from all over the world - that will throttle your connection if they detect you are downloading large files from your torrent client. And you may get a fine in the mail a few days later too if their laws are strict - particularly in developed countries with updated piracy laws. If you are torrenting, use a VPN, an anti-virus, maybe even a more private browser than the usual chrome etc, and ideally trusted sources. It's too risky not to be smart about this. And don't take this information at face value from random youtube commenters, myself included. Research it carefully on your own before you start doing it.

Commercial vpns are worst than anything you can possibly imagine, worst then viruses worst then malawares, wors then facebook even.... Learn how to create private vpns your self with multiple levels of sub nets in your own network using basic routers that dont collect data. When you subnet your networks properly the only thing they can collect is a user and pc name, macs and local ip address. If you do multi levels of subnets properly then they can only see the name of the router and the first level subneted network. Its not as hard as you may think, its worth the hassle if privacy is important

I'm skeptical bout qbitorrent because it's free but I'll go ahead n download it will it also not track what I'm doing and not give me a virus?

@@questionasker8384 well it's open source. Mean you can check the code. No bitcoin miner, ads and less likely to get malware. Utorrent is fine but you have to be more careful

Can somebody help me? I've been downloading torrent files since I'd learned about it. I still don't know about the bad stuff it causes or what. I try to use a vpn when downloading the actual torrent files, but when I try to use utorrent, the torrents would not download so I always end up downloading the torrent without vpns. I thought vpns are supposed to make it easier to download them? Please helpppp.

it should be fine if youre doing it in the phone and are not distributing it just delete it from utorrent once you are done
