VProm used on new The Weeknd song. Just a little update to inform VProm users that the artist, Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, who goes by the name, The Weeknd, has recently used AJ's VProm Linn LM-1 plugin on his song "Is There Someone Else?" from his latest album, Dawn FM, released January 2022. This has been confirmed by one of his producers.

@@jaredm815 That I don't know, you could reach out to Aly via his site and ask him. Though I don't think the producer wants this information out there publicly, but I trust Aly and he has no reason to make it up. All of Prince's band members own this software and they use it on their records. Many studios also have this plug in so it is definitely out there and being used and is on various records.

@@clintshelton3976 If you absolutely have to calibrate monitors Sonarworks is the way to go to get a flat EQ. But, I'd always aim for a perfect room size and shape with perfect acoustic treatment first, then the best monitors and audio interface you can afford and if after all this they are still coloured in some way, then Sonarworks - but I'd always use Sonarworks as an absolute last resort. I think the Sonarworks mic to do this cost about £95 and it takes about 20 minutes of moving it around, that and the software to stick on your computer. Are you able to add flanger and delay to the rim shot sound only or will those effects go globally to the entire output only? And can each drum be EQed on its own in the recording app? I own a Roland TR909 and love the fact that each sound has its own output jack; I was able to flange the rim shot and it sounded very Prince-like, but it was not the holy grail doorknock sound. Also does this have that “pop” sound which I think is the hand clap (?) that Prince used on albums 1999, Purple Rain, Around the World in a Day, Parade, and Sign ☮️the Times? Some say it’s a hand clap pitched and EQed but I’m not sure. Great tutorial by the way.
@tecraven
@tecraven 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael. Without opening up the app and looking into this I'm not sure if you can delay rim shot on it's own within VProm, could be that you can. But, what you definitely can do is create two tracks in your DAW and have VProm on each and have just the rimshot on one track with a flanger effect in the DAW and on the other track don't have the rim shot and have everything else. Sorted. Again, not sure if it can be done within VProm, I'll get AJ to answer that one for me. You can definitely EQ each drum on it's own by splitting the drum parts onto different tracks, again, within VProm, I'll get AJ to answer. Door knock on VProm is the holy grail ;) Yes, VProm has the classic hand clip on one of the buttons, clearly marked, which can be pitched and EQd.

Not sure how to do it in Logic but In Ableton, you can create a new Audio Track, select the VProm as the "audio from" and then select any instrument you want (like snare, rimshot, kick etc.). This way you program your patterns within just 1 VProm instance but have the flexibility of routing the instruments to individual audio tracks and apply effects on them. Finally, you set the output routing on the VProm to MULTI. Hope this helps!

How do you actually create the midi beats that the plug-in then plays?
@tecraven
@tecraven Ай бұрын
Creating midi regions is super easy, depending on your DAW. In Logic you simply create a midi track and right click and choose 'create midi region' and then using the piano roll you drop the beats in with the Linn VST assigned to that track. This is how all midi-based plugins work be it a drum machine plugin, a synth, piano, guitar, whatever...
@guitardave
@guitardave Ай бұрын
@ I’m in Reaper and can make a midi track. - it was how to actually create the beats within that. Do you hit record and then “play” the VST live using the mouse on the buttons? Or do you have to manually draw in the dots on the midi roll? I know this is “noob” stuff but we all have to start somewhere!
@tecraven
@tecraven Ай бұрын
@@guitardave Not familiar with Reaper, but no, you definitely would not play the VST using the mouse buttons. You either programme in the midi beats by clicking them onto the appropriate bar/beat/count on the piano roll or if you wanted to play the drums in live using the record method you would need to buy either a hardware midi keyboard controller, such as the Arturia Keylab Essential 49 MK3 or a midi drum/finger pad like the AKAI Professional MPD218 for example, with the latter you tap the beats in with your fingers, this is known as 'finger drumming'. Using a keyboard midi keyboard controller simply means you hit certain black and white piano keys to trigger certain drum sounds, which is another standard way of doing it.

Ok. So you click ‘LOAD’ in VProm and then click ‘Load Bank…’ and then select the ‘VLinn_LEGENDARY_BANK01.fbx file and after that on the VProm interface at the top left where it has the name of the drum kit underneath that are a back and forward arrow just to the left of where it says ‘Compare’ so click the forward or back arrows to scroll through the new kits that are listed. When you then click the. Buttons or programme a new beat that new kit will sound. There is a slight gremlins here that Aly needs to fix because if you click on the dropdown menu where the drum kit is listed at the top left near the on/off button and you go down to ‘Factory Presets’ under there it does not show the new name for the new kits, instead, it shows the old factory preset names from 0 to 7 with LM-1 INIT listed as the first and MINNEAPOLIS 1 as the second and so on and so forth. Another slight glitch is this. Even after you’ve used the right and left arrows to select say the OBERHEIM DX kit, next to where it says PROGRAMME NAME: just under where it says Compare, Copy, Paste, Undo, Redo, the old LINNDRUM (for example) will still show there. To change it to OBERHEIM DX, simply click the mouse in that area and it instantly updates to reflect the new kit, then click outside the box for the full update of it. Hope that makes sense. I’m using this as a plugin in Logic Pro X and Ally is aware of this issue, but I don’t know when he’s going to get around to writing a few new lines of code to fix them. In the meantime, this is how I use it and it does not really bother me now, now that I know this is how it works. Come on, Aly, sort it ;)

@@tecraven thanks a million...could have saved myself a few quid I already purchased Audiolounge DX VST plugin
@tecraven
@tecraven 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrJpbmusic2005 If I'm not mistaken I think Audiolounge just uses samples grabbed off the web and is nothing like how Aly James did it with proper EPROM computer programming so the Audiolounge sounds will change (for the worse) if you tune them. Also, and this if if it does use samples, I would not be totally convinced they were sourced from an LM-1 and even if they were they would have gone through unwanted EQ and converters that are of what quality, who knows... This is why I love Aly's VProm so much as it took they guy a hell of a long time to get the code and algorithms right. Aly once told me that if he simply wanted to recreate an LM-1 by using samples grabbed off the web he probably could have done that overnight.

@Alyjameslab
@Alyjameslab 3 жыл бұрын
@@_Vassilios_ you should save any custom kit you make for the song via the LOAD/SAVE menu, any custom EPROM(s) will be saved within the preset file so it is easy to load back. The VST (VST2) format of VProm is the one with the more stable behavior regarding presets, AU can have some minor issues with preset names display or like you experienced reset of the state when loading back, VST3 should be avoided on Windows with Ableton Live. In short use VProm (VST2 format) when possible. My current AU and VST3 plug-ins are more stable in that regard now and I will update VProm in the future including some of those changes.

Has anyone emulated the internal timing feel of the Lm1? So now we have the best sound but what about the groove feel of the sequencer of the real one? Daw quantize in a monolithic way, not sure that that is how the lm1 was.. or maybe it was and its those other variances that this plugin recreates, that account for the groove? I would love it if someone could illuminate on this subject of the microtiming nuance of the original lm-1 sequencer and quantization... how steady is the clock yes, but more so how does it micro time? Is it mono lithic? or are there separate timing subtles to each sound... just like a real drummer would have???!!!
@Alyjameslab
@Alyjameslab 3 жыл бұрын
Let me answer this one :) short version "the groove feel is overrated", it mostly come from the sound themselves. Details: - Those machines were using crystal as the main clock from which all other timing are derived, this can vary with temperature but overall we are talking about 1% variation in BPM. - The sequencer resolution was down to 48 PPQN (pulse per quarter note) nowadays it is way higher than that, it is enough variation to slightly change quantized positions when using swing ( still it is minimum, you can export a MIDI file choosing the PPQN resolution in Cubase and other DAW to try, then import back ) - The main "feel" mainly comes from the fact that some samples have a bit of "air or silence" in front of them, the recording back then was raw and they do not all start at the first zero crossing transient. When you change the tuning you are also giving more or less air to the sound which in turn impact the feel, noticeably on the snare always a bit behind the bit, which can also give the feel of a rushing kick drum.. so these things move with the tuning. - last but not least the hihat is never the same as the hihat "burst" is looped constantly internally, when you trigger the hihat you actually trigger an envelope>VCA combo. To sum up when you add all of the above you have the "feel", funnily some popular LM-1 tracks were recording without using the sequencer, just played live on the pad... :) If you really want to go down this route you could set up an LFO modulating the tempo by 1% at max and exporting the MIDI sequence at 48 PPQN.

@@Alyjameslab So the pitch (tuning) is the reason raw samples would sound rushed in a daw sequencer? I want to purchase this badly but the rushing causes my rhythm to be sterile meaning the sample starts directly at zero crossing ( wildly annoying) please send help, lol.
@Alyjameslab
@Alyjameslab 3 жыл бұрын
@@kensmechanicalaffair No not at all :) if you are talking about samples in general in a "modern" sequencer there are many way to process pitch changing, not always changing "speed", VProm is doing it in it's own desirable fashion which would at max produce a laid back feel at extreme tuning, not the opposite, no your issue seems to be DAW quantize settings, if you are using quantize your rhythm will be close or at 100% on the grid, aka "perfectly on time" if your samples start at the very beginning even more so. While stiff or robotic rhythms have there place depending on the context, if you want "feel" just turn quantize off and record the rhythm playing it live from a MIDI keyboard or pad, check for latency to be as low as your sound card allow and your good. Another option is to displace the beats on the piano roll by hand until it feels "right" to you

Sounds amazing with no EQ though. I guess what I was saying regarding 'dodgy' samples is that we don't know what EQ, compression etc has been applied to those, at least in this case we know what is being applied as we are doing the applying. will check that out for sure! and digging up samples online can be both a curse and blessing. the pitching algorithms in VPROM are what made me curious the most, especially since most DAWs/Samplers introduce more or less noticable artifacts when changing their tune. cant wait to try it out

@@tecraven With your Arturia MK2, do you think could be possible to set most of the parameters of the VProm to all the knobs, sliders and pads in it? If so, it could be a good idea for a tutorial video where you can guide us how to unite both of them.

I can't get the multi-output to work at all with the latest version Logic Pro and OSX Ventura. Tried also the stock drum machine designer plugin for comparison and the multi-output works fine. Anyone have a solution for this?
@tecraven
@tecraven Жыл бұрын
I guess it's the typical Mac OS updating = 90% chance of screwing Logic X cash data.. This has happened in the past causing an issue with notably 3rd party multi-outputs plug Ins such as VProm. It got solved then with a Logic update a few years back. Usually it happens after an OS upgrade. First you should try to uninstall and reinstall the plugin and before that clear any cache on your Mac. Folk often use "Clean My Mac" which would kinda make everything fine. Can you let me know if this fixes your issue or if you are a first time VProm user that just isn't sure how to activate Multi-out on the plugin?

@patsalty

@@tecraven Figured it out! For anyone else having this issue in Logic, here's what solved it for me: 1. Setup a new track with VPROM as multi-output 2. In the VPROM UI, click "SETS" at the bottom left 3. Under "Output Routing", if you see "SINGLE", click it which will then toggle it to "MULTI" 4. Pop your mixer open, and you'll see a - and + at the bottom of the channel strip for the VPROM track 5. Click + which adds a new sub / virtual track that's mapped to a single voice of VPROM...keep adding as many as you need. Note, the original VPROM track will now just be mapped to the kick (1-2), at least for me. 6. In your mixer, select all the newly added sub-tracks, then right click on a blank area and select "Create Track"...this will add them to the main view 7. In your main view, select all VPROM tracks, right click and select create track stack...make it summing. Now you can add effects and processing to each individual track as well as the full kit Honestly this may be in the manual but I didn't read it yet.

The original Linn LM-1physical machine had a 'laid back' feel due to the algorithms and how it worked. Aly has replicated that to perfection. Maybe this is what you're hearing, just a laid back feel? Or. is there a possibility of some latency in your system? I find it to be spot on, just as the original hardware version.

@@ZJohnnyBGood Haha, guess so. Not sure Declan Rice will set the Emirates alight if we sign him. Personally, I agree with Roy Keane, Rice is worth 60 million, not 120, not when you look at what Harland was bought for and other top players. That would make Rice one of the most expensive players ever. I watched him in the England match the there day away to Malta and it took me 20 minutes to realise he was even on the pitch and for most of the game he was no more than a few yards from the centre spot. Gundogan and Caicedo would be good though. Will be sad to see Xhaka go as he's been decent of late, but won't miss his red cards or him starting fights that end up losing us games.
@ZJohnnyBGood
@ZJohnnyBGood Жыл бұрын
@@tecraven I agree on the most part. I think that Caicedo can do on the right side what Zinchenko does on the left, being somewhere between a full back and a midfielder. We should sign him and keep Tierney so we can mirror our game plan when needed. I think we need a forward who will give a flavour that Jesus lacks. We need another center back because when Holding came in for Saliba, he wasn't so bad defensively but we did have a lot less ball possession. And I can't believe I'm saying this but I am quite sad to see Xhaka go. He was very good as a leader this season. He even stayed down in a few instances after tackles so Mikel can do a quick brief to the team.
@tecraven
@tecraven Жыл бұрын
@@ZJohnnyBGood Yup, agreed with this. Arsenal have not had a 'natural striker' since Ian Wright. Sure, Henry was decent, but I agree with Lee Dixon when he said if he had to pick between Wright and Henry, Henry would be on the bench ;) Arsenal need a natural striker who will stick in 25 goals per season. Jesus brings a dynamic to the side, for sure, but he fluffs his lines so often and misses easy chances that even Ramsdale would not miss. Not sure about Tierney though, it's too easy to get around him and when he does run down the wing he just lobs it in without looking, unlike Martinelli or Trossard, who are way more creative. I guess we need a stand in for Sake, two decent holding midfielders if Shaka and Partey go, the latter, happy to see him go as he can't shoot for sh•t. Yup, I know, he had a couple of good goals, but he reminds me of Ramsey, (ex Arse Welsh player) who would have four crap games and then once in about every five games he'd score a goal of the season contender. Rob Holding is average, at best, he's too keen to play it back to keeper or sideways and infield, whereas Saliba does more creative things like drive forward and push through the guy in front of him to pass it through to Saka, then all hell breaks lose.
