As an Infiniti tech I can tell you he’s not lying. The VQ37 is a damn good engine. Super reliable, makes awesome power and requires very little maintenance other than routine oils changes. Higher mileage engines sometimes see valve cover leaks but that’s pretty much it.

Like many modern engines, the VQ37 is very very complicated with a lot of moving parts that operate under rather high stresses producing a lot of horsepower. The fact that these engines have been called "reliable as a hammer" is a real testament to the Nissan organization. The designers engineers and planners, the toolmakers and machinists, the assembly staff and the Q/A people all need to be honored. It is no small thing to make something like this on an industrial scale at a price that many people can afford. High performance PLUS top reliability is truly a marvel of our modern age. Just change the oil regularly and these things run and run.

This video made me buy a g37. Best video by far when considering one. I came from a Audi s4 and a Volkswagen CC and while I did every possible service on them and I still had issues. The VQ engine is just so refined and feels way better build than any German car I’ve driven. Love em but they are too much of a hassle. Never thought I’d go Japanese but you can’t beat the reliability of them. Thanks my man 🙏🏻

With 2,000 miles on it. 2 weeks after driving off the lot the fuel pump burned up leaving me stranded. Infact that car left me stranded another 3 times with operational failures. @billywheaton9952 5 жыл бұрын
He makes a good point about changing the auto trans fluid. Changing it every 30~40,000 miles will make the complex transmission last longer. ALSO- if you have the AWD version, change those "driveline fluids" - the transfer case/ clutch fluids and the fluids in the front and rear differentials at the same time. The AWD system is a complex drive train and it will last longer with regular fluid changes.

In my case, I am so happy that God gave me one of those VQ37VHR. The engine sounds is amazing, also it is reliable, durable, well known and fast. And the car itself has a great sound system and excellent quality materials and style for the price. All my cars have been from japan, and I like the fact that they share parts (Infiniti/Nissan) and as my previous car, they are also easy to mantain. They are easy to sell, the next buyer knows he is buying a durable car. Everytime I drive this car with this engine VQ37, I enjoy it so much. 😍

Thank you for posting something for the majority that own a Q50 3.7 or 3.0, mature adults. No swipe intended at the younger generations but of your car is back firing and popping, it's not "cool" and straight pipes actually hurt your performance. This is my second 3.7 and I'll move to a 3.0 S on my 3rd. Also, if you beat any car, they'll fall apart, but these cars are founded on a platform intended to run with a Corvette. They'll handle anything reasonable that we'll throw its way, short of constant donuts and hole shots. I sound angry, I'm not. Just happy to finally find someone that talks sense about a damn fine automobile. Thanks again for shooting from the hip on "common problems". Change the oil, don't bang the rev limiter, especially on a cold start and perform scheduled maintenance. The car will last a long time but it's not a cheap car so its not cheap to fix. appreciate your content and insights!

I bought a 2008 G35x new, and when my wife's 2012 Impreza went up in flames just before it was 5 years old, we decided to buy a CPO 2013 G37x because of my excellent experience with the 08. I compared prices of used Subarus and other cars, and it became a no brainer if you look at the cost and super reliable G-series. Great value as a CPO (only slightly more than a used Subaru, but the build quality of the Infiniti is far superior to the Subaru). I find the G35 to be quicker than the G37 and quieter with the smaller diameter pipes. But, the G37 gets about 2-3 mpg better mileage with the larger pipes and 7-speed transmission. I also prefer the sportier heavy steering feel of the 2008 over the later G37 models. Also, after my wife moved up to a car with many more ponies, I don't think she would ever go back to an econobox. Acceleration at highway speeds is effortless. It is a highly rated reliable car in many reviews like Consumer Reports. Only thing I've had to change in my 2008 was the alternator so far that was unscheduled maintenance. Just put a good set of tires on the car. Running Pilot Sport A/S on mine and Comp T/A 2 on the other.

I think you mean to say that the only things that break are easily serviceable wear-and-tear items that need to be replaced on most all cars periodically. This is opposed to vehicles with inherent design flaws that cause them to fail enexpectedly and catastrophically/spectacularly. For example M3 engines that eject connecting rods out the block when the rod bearings fail; not a serviceable issue. Great content btw

I’ve had G50/G37/ and now the QX50 I wish I would have went w/ the Q50 but I moved from desert climates to mountains so I went with the small SUV. The one thing I will say is on both my cars I had bearings and bushing replaced. At lower than expected mileage, dealer said it happens in desert climates.

So glad i searched and came across this video. Im like a week away from getting a used 2011 370z and was trying to find just an honest owner of either an infinity or Nissan with the VQ37 for there opinion. See now ive heard about this galley gasket and it bugs me but what can you really do but wait and see if it happens. I can do the work if it goes so that'll be ok. But thanks for the rest of the review 👍 ive heard other people that reviewed the z say the motors very sound but its better to hear from an owner who has some time in one. I also cant believe how these car dealers do tell people they never have to service the tranny. Lol like you said if you keep up with routine maintenance you can easily get over 200,000 miles out of these newer engines. And still have excellent cylinder pressures at that mileage. Definitely subbed and turned on notifications man, great honest channel 👍

this engine does have a common problem, the valve gasket will leak prematurely and oil will get into the sparkplug tubes causing misfires. also, the timing chain tensioner is controlled by oil pressure and this engine may burn up to a quart of oil every 2000 miles and low oil can cause your engine to go boom.

I bought a 2010 G37 sedan about 2 years ago that had 124,000 (now has 136,000) for $8,000 cash. I knew it needed rotors before I bought it so immediately put all new rotors and pads, plus tires. I pretty much baby the car aside from finding myself on an empty road from time to time here in Houston. About 8 months afterwards I had my AC stop cooling at idle. Blows cold all the time at night and immediately taking off from a light it will start cooling. Drive thrus in Houston heat sucks though. Was told it's the expansion valve that's only about $40. But to get to it you have to remove the whole dash and the cheapest I've been quoted to do it is $1,800. Watched the videos of what to do and I don't trust myself to get all that back together 😂 Transmission is starting to slip in 2nd randomly. Sometimes it's barely noticeable, sometimes it slips completely and after a second or two slams into gear. Now I'm having an exhaust leak that's fairly noticable and cold start but smooths out within 10 seconds of running but still has a noticable (to me anyway) exhaust leak. Work offshore so I'm only home for 13 days every 2 months and where I live it's hard to work on my car so coordinating the time and place to fix my issues is becoming my issue.
@DoomFinger511

Cleaning the throttle body literally takes 5 minutes. You just pull the hose that connects the air box to the intake. You'll see the butterfly flaps (aka the throttle body) and can use some carb cleaner and toothbrush to wipe off any gunk. Then there is computer reset you do by pushing a series of buttons inside the car. There are YT vids showing how to do it. Most of the people who say their g37 won't start is because they never clean the throttle body. Also a lot of people put aftermarket short pipe open air filters. It looks cool but all it does is suck in the hot air by the engine. Either leave it alone or get the long tube ones that actually get cold air from below the engine. The gally gasket is a real issue. That's why I bought a 2012 since it was fixed by that year. The TPS in each tire can go bad, but it doesn't effect the car. It's just a light that pops on in the dash, it can be ignored until fixed.

2011 g37 problems 108,000 miles, 2 years ownership. 1- Sunroof leaks and was fixed 4 times until payed a body shop to make a solid roof. Water fills under rug and car smells. 2- gally gasket and this is almost assured to happen I was told 3- water pump and thermostat which overheated car quick and sent car into limp mode 4- entire screen goes black and you have no radio or backup cam or anything 5- some line for air conditioner which would be cheap on most cars but for some reason is metal on this car and costs 600 bucks. Yes some things are luck, some things are quality of unknown previous owners upkeep, but some of these things seem like bad design that could have been prevented.

I had an 07 maxima that had 187,000 miles on before I traded it in for my truck. Ran like new up to the day I traded it in. Only work I had to do was spark plugs, one abs sensor, one wheel bearing, and I had to replace the tires and brakes every year or two but that's because I drove 112 miles a day in traffic for work. I had a 2010 G37x and I got rid of it with 170,000 miles and experienced no problems. I tried to get an Infiniti dealer to change the 7 speed automatic trans fluid and they wouldn't. They said if I wasn't having problems then don't touch it. They told me it is NOT serviceable. If you drain the trans there is no actual fill plug and you have to know how to fill and check it when it gets to the specific temperature. I did change the spark plugs with OEM plugs, cleaned the MAS air sensors, the throttle bodies, and then changed the fluid in the front/rear differential and transfer case. I used all OEM Nissan fluids and there's some good videos here that show how to do all. Oh, yeah. The one thing that wasn't great was when I would go through a touch-less car wash the door windows would leak just a bit in the front corner. There's a few tips out there to try to fix them but nothing really worked 100%.

So I have a 2011, this may not be applicable to newer years but there are a TON of threads on this issue. My G37 has a sunroof leak. This is common in G35's as well. The issue is with a cheap plastic drain plug under the dash that gets clogged. This could drip on your mats and damage computer components. Furthermore, the wiring harness grommet on the firewall could cause a water leak if the seal is bad. EDIT: what makes this a pain to fix is that its so far under the dash you need a pair of long needle nose pliers. Even then, its difficult.

My only real complain with the G37 is how over engineered it is. Doing repairs on simple things takes longer then usual. For instance I wanted to change the air cabin filter and glove box light. 2 parts that cost $30 together. In every car (including the g37) access to these are right behind the glove box and removing it is usually something you can do without any tools. However in a g37 taking out the glove box requires removing 8 screws (2 which require an extension rod), along with two side panels. So it was like a 90 minute job. Same with changing the headlights. Just to access them requires removing the front tires or pulling out the air boxes to get access. Beside that, the parts are pretty cheap (with a large 3rd party market) and because it such a popular tuning car there are tons of how-to vids online. The myg37.com forum is also really helpful!

It really really depends on the tires, cheap or old compared to new nicer ones makes it feel like a different car and obviously if you get sport tires it's gonna be a harsher ride compared to the Sport A/S 3+'s because I live in Seattle so I need A/S and with the wider tires it definitely helps me with traction off a dig or low speeds from just spinning tires. I would fish tail on the freeway goin like 60-70 with OEM summer tires in wet winter weather. It was a sign.

2014 QX50, bought new, currently 49k, I had the dealer do transmission fluid change at 19k. Don’t think they changed all the fluid - only what was in the pan. Then at 41k I did changed it myself, (dealer fee was criminal for such a no brainer task) the fluid that I drained out was dark, didn’t look terrible but did not resemble the nice pink color of fresh ATF. And This was done only 21k after the dealers service. Moral of the story is: Do not follow the manufacturers recommendations on Transmission servicing. I think they recommend 60k or 70k. Wayyy too long - IMHO.

generally, automatic transmissions in rwd are built to handle up to 1.5X the stock engine power, or 1.3X if fwd (to an extent, and varies by brand, meaning a 370z transmission will last more than a sentra cheaper model's automatic transmission if stock power is doubled, or toyota vs chrysler, one is just build better) a downside to increasing power is they're now more sensitive to fluid cleanliness and heat. also, the galley gasket failing is due to prolonged oil changes; oil gets acidic and will eat that material very quickly, compared to other rubbery/silicone type materials that are more forgiving. lastly, did someone really complain about their TPMS going bad? they're most likely also outraged when their wall clock needs a battery change too. I was fascinated about the nissan VQ engines in school; the VQ35HR is still the best imo. it is literally the second best consumer "car"engine after the 2JZ. as for "truck" engines, all toyota V6 takes the cake there. some older m52 & m54 bmw inline 6 were also tanks. sorry for rant hehehe. cheers
