It's amazing to see how far VR tech is still going on outside of mainstream attention. This is pretty exciting.

Well this is a huge advancement. If they can get haptic feedback here, and find a way to have models actually have some level of kinetic force feedback through haptic, we may start to see the metaverse concept become real properly through vrchat

@nikushim666515 сағат бұрын
Its not a advancement at all, these things have been around forever in mocap. They wont take off on the consumer level because Flex or elastic resistors are expensive and unless they can get the price WAY down you wont see them much. Typical gloves cost around 500 and don't include position tracking (so tack on another 300 bucks for trackers), they also typically dont include control sticks. Which are sold separately so tack on another 100 bucks. Now your looking at around 900 bucks for some gloves.
@ZarathustraDK2 ай бұрын
Tbh, they should totally sell the index-finger controller/buttons as a standalone thing without the glove. We already have hand-recognition via hmd-camera or other external tracking-sources that allows to be hands-free, what we don't have is a hands-free solution to lateral movement (well, without strange poses that is), something that index-finger joystick seems ideal for.
@Sedokun2 ай бұрын
They have to replace the ribbon cable to magsafe/pogo array. This is definitely not a consumer grade product.
@CptJistuce2 ай бұрын
Pogo arrays don't actually handle high movement very well, since the pins only connect through spring tension. When you move in the direction of the pins, they retract due to momentum. I would like to see a more robust solution than the flimsy ribbon they're using, though. Something durable and rated for a lot of cycles. I know ye olde 9v connector is inappropriate for the task, but it is durable and latches reliably. Traditional ribbon cables with a pin header are sadly way too large for the size constraints.

An excellent start, but a very simple to implement change that would massively improve them is put button emulators in the finger tips that are triggered when you touch a finger tip to the same hands thumb tip to "complete a circuit" without having to depress an analogue button; that would give you 8 virtual buttons with zero need for external immersion breaking analogue buttons or controllers to use, just you own hands! Do that and I will buy some! :)

May i say one thing?: Its not that we need gloves, theres already hand tracking. This gap will be bridged via software. What do I mean? Those modules that are on the index finger? Just make that the controller, and use handtracking simultaneously. You dont need the glove at all, the modules can just vibrate, your brain will fill in the gaps.

For example, can you curl your fingers without making a fist? Or, for example, make a right angle with your fingers (as if you're climbing a ledge)?

It uses SteamVR’s skeletal hand input. Yes you can curl individual fingers, but I don’t think it’s precise enough for the right angle you are describing.
