The one downside is that I can’t go back to flatscreen … my son thinks I’m a VR snob .. lol

It's not a choice. Once I got into VR, my interest in flat games just died. I was in the middle of playing through one of the Borderlands games, and was enjoying it. And then just... nah... couldn't stay interested enough to finish it anymore. Used to play flat games avidly, now I play VR game avidly.

Yeah, I'm there with you, and I'm pretty sure I look like a VR snob to some of my friends sometimes too. But, most of them get it as I explain it to them. For me, it's the difference between "playing a game," and "living an experience." I'm not really that interested in playing the game. I want to feel like I'm living in that world, to the greatest degree possible. That's what VR has done for me (or to me)... LOL

@@jollyjulian I actually think the biggest thing holding back VR at the most fundamental level is that most people who get into VR are still willing to play flat games. They continue to buy flat games just like before. Those of us who can't go back I would guess only represent 10-20% of VR users. The reason why this is so bad is that it makes it correct for game developers to ignore VR and instead continue making only flat games. Because they can collect literally the same dollars from the same customers for far less effort and risk. There is no financial incentive to make VR games at all no matter how many people get into VR as long as those people remain perfectly willing to buy flat games instead. This is the fundamental driver of why VR content has grown slowly. If everyone that tried VR lost interest in flat gaming like we did, then while we may be a small market at first, making VR games that appeal to us is the only way to get our dollars. If they want those dollars, they have to make VR games!

The aspect of VR that has been life changing for me is spending time "in person" with friends who are far away. VR erases distance. No other technology does this. Not phones. Not video calls. Before VR, we could communicate over long distances, but we couldn't have in person presence over long distances. That's very different. And much more powerful. You can hug someone in VR. I've been able to reconnect with friends who moved away. And I've been able to make many new friends because they're drawn from a pool of _the entire world_ rather than just the people who happen to live within driving distance of me. It has augmented my social life substantially. I spend time with friends in RL and in VR. And sometimes VR friends have become RL friends. VR needs more co-op games! The industry hasn't really figured this out. VR makes co-op with friends a much bigger deal than it ever was for flat games. But instead game devs largely focus on just making the same kinds of games they did in flat. And those games in general do not allow for much VR "in person" interaction with other players. Heck, most of them are single player games. The few really interactive co-op games there are in VR are an absolute blast to play with my friends. It's a next level experience. There's just nothing else like it in flat gaming. The environment is virtual, but the people are real. Fundamentally, it's no different than Disneyland. The environments of Disneyland aren't real either. It's the people you are with who are the real draw. You're experiencing these fantasy environments with them. VR is like that.

I agree so much, and this is one of the things I think "non-VR" people don't believe when I tell them - how "present" you feel with other people. Really is magical. One of my favorite things about playing Walkabout Mini-Golf is that feeling like I'm in an actual space with my friends, even though they look a little cartoony, and the world is not "photo-real." It still feels more real to me than a zoom-call ever could. Great comment!

I am so with you on this. It has changed my life. I have been doing VR since 2017 and it is the only way I can play video games now. I spent from 2006 to 2023 trying to play World of Warcraft and never getting it right. When I finally tried an MMORPG in VR (Zenith) I realized why I love VR so much. Unfortunately, Zenith is now dead but I still can’t go back to flatscreen and I still spend at least six hours a day in virtual reality. I just finished an hour and a half workout where I exercise with trainers, including weight training and boxing, and I got on my elliptical and rode through highly detailed maps that allowed me to go further than I would because of the distraction of being in VR!
@jollyjulian
@jollyjulian 3 ай бұрын
Love it! Yeah, I'm bummed that Zenith is no more. While it wasn't perfect, by any means, it was the closest we've had to MMORPG in Vr, and it was so much more immersive! Hopefully something great will come to replace it someday soon. And love the training you're doing in VR! What are you using for Weight training and eliptical in VR? I use synth riders, thrill of the fight boxing, and swordsmen for a workout, but would love something to use when riding my exercise bike. :)
@AprilPvd
@AprilPvd 3 ай бұрын
@@jollyjulian I use Litesport for boxing! They have a really good mixed reality set up so that I feel like the trainer is in the room with me. And I use Holofit with my elliptical. It also works for bikes very well. Thanks for all you do for VR. I really enjoy your channel tremendously. Oh, and about Zenith, the thing that really worked was the combat. I really felt like I was using a sword or bow and not just clicking buttons.

I agree about the triple A games. People get too caught up in that when there are a lot of good games regardless of that factor. Even some of the simple ones can have some of the best replay value and not all triple A are good. But this year is looking good for games and its starting to catch on and get bigger. So the future is looking bright for VR. Take care

Yes, I totally feel like there's a place for the big AAA games, and the smaller (but unique) games that you can play casually or just for an hour or two, and still get great feelings from them. Love it. The more VR, the merrier! Especially when it's well made, regardless of game length.

I love VR for one main very important reason, I am near 70 and found playing games on a PC or console is a real pain in the ass, literally as finding a decent seat that is comfortable for a few hours playing is so annoying and these days stops me from wanting to play a PC game, now with the Quest 3, I no longer need to sit to play a game, I can play all my games standing and moving around, I worked for 50 years standing all day and nevber sitting down as I couldn't do my job sitting, this means I can stand for 8 hours with no problems, but I can't sit for more than an hour before my seat gets uncomfortable and I have spent thousands on chairs, if I could use a recliner for playing PC games then that would make a difference, but I have tried and it doesn't work. I really enjoy the thrill of being in a game where the NPCs and mobs/bosses, enemies are the same size as me, playing Half Life in 3D is a whole new experience, playing a Zombie game or any scary game, is a totally different experience. I laughed at people on KZbin running into a wall or falling over, until I bought my Quest 3 and found myself running into my printer stand to get away from a creature in Half Life lol, sure I knew I was in a game but when something sneaks up on you or something from the dark suddenly jumps out at you, there is nothing on a PC that comes even close. Even playing a non 3D game is better on the Quest 3, also buy a decent strap with a battery option and set it up correctly, add some foam or cloth if needed to make it something that is made for you, it took me three different straps till I found the one I really like and now, I can play for three hours and forget I am wearing the headset as I will go to scratch my head or nose and realise I have the headset on :) Also shooting things in a VR game is far more fun, swinging a sword ro using a Bow, or even using a Pistol or Rifle, is way better in 3D. Everyone that I know that didn't like the VR experience is that they got Sea sick. I have played for 6 hours plus and not even come close to feeling sea sick or motion sickness, sure getting used to standing and suddenly flying forward or going forward on a ROller Coaster is a weird feeling and takes a while to get used to as I still have to watch my balance on some games, especially the first time of the day. Also being able to walk in a game as well as having to pick things up and I found that I lost 8 kg in only two weeks as well as got a lot more fitness as now I can play Beat Sabre for three hours straight at hard and it took me a couple months to work my way up to hard, I think all more mature people should use the Q3 to keep their eye hand co-ordination and I am thinking that playing games like Beat Sabre would help hold back Dementia and maybe Alzheimer's ? There are many games on the Q3 that require thinking as well as using your hands to move things about as well as working out riddles and similar. One other main thing I really like about VR today is that I can buy VR games on my PC that run in the Headset as well as buy cheap VR games through the Meta shop, Quest 3 VR games are cheaper than new PC games.

this is FANTASTIC! I love the stories you shared here, and they really represent what I feel so many can get from VR. And the fact that a big part of it was WANTING to stand and play, and move around! I love that about VR too (although I do occasionally enjoy playing seated as well, but mostly - standing!). And the running into something thing - I will always remember the first time I leaned on a table that wasn't really there, and fell on my butt! I laughed for an hour about that one. Fortunately, I didn't hurt myself or break anything in the room! It's great you, like I can, are able to play for HOURS without any vr sickness. While I never really had too many issues with VR sickness, when first starting, I did have to play a bit before getting it all out of my system. Now, nothing seems to bother me in VR at all. Great comments as well about the options for games that are out there, on Quest native, and PCVR as well. I'm there with ya! Thanks for the comment!

I go way back to the DK2. The first time I turned that thing on it hit me. It was the moment I realized "Its really here". The scene was a simple desk and a floor that went to infinitium....but it was surreal......That to me is still my hallelujah moment. Equal to watching Dragons Lair hit the arcades, and Mario 64 on N64 - "holy crap, you can move in 3d". Had every device since and can't put it down.

My last eye exam my doctor says my eyes were actually improving, but that was specifically after I retired and stopped having to look at the computer screen at work.So I don’t think there’s any appreciable home from using VR. My only issue, as a newbie, is that frankly, I'm awful at the games/manipulation of the controllers. I understand that it's just a matter of time/learning, but it can be frustrating. I've really enjoyed some of the non game apps..mountain climbing, ISS, travel. I did recently buy the Kiwi H4 headset based upon your review.
@jollyjulian
@jollyjulian 3 ай бұрын
Great point - I do feel that's one of the things that keep a lot of die-hard flat-screen gamers from really giving VR a try. A controller system that has been 4 decades in our consciousness. We know how to do things in a game with mouse and keyboard. But, when done right by developers, VR controls, I feel, are more intuitive to what real human interactions are like than anything else out there. We just have to retrain our brains for a bit to do what comes naturally, instead of thinking of it like "a computer game" that would use mouse and keyboard or xbox / playstation controllers. For me, any game that uses VR controls over the other options, I feel better at now, and I definitely feel more immersed in the "reality," which is my biggest things. Love the comment.

I like the immersion, but VR has lost some of its magic from the days i had the Quest 1. For all its faults, you just cant beat the feeling the Quest 1 gave because it was OLED. Now it's obsolete and i'm stuck with the Quest 3 which is a LCD headset. Can't wait to get back to OLED or micro OLED. I'm trying to get a PSVR2 for PC use because it's OLED, but i have heard setup is a bitch and that's putting me off. I also have to be very careful with what i choose to see in the headset because i suffer from motion sickness. Not enough has been done to mitigate motion sickness. I never developed much "sea legs" over the many years of using VR.
@jollyjulian
@jollyjulian 3 ай бұрын
Yeah, the first headset I owned was OLED - the VIVE PRO. And, when I switched to the Valve Index (NO Oled), I noticed a difference for sure. But, the other positives were worth it. If there's one things (other than increased FOV) I would love to see Meta and others do, it's adopt OLED screens. They cost a lot more, so increase of cost of headset will happen, but having that option would be amazing.

And sorry to hear about the VR-sickness from motion. I know some are MUCH more affected by it than others, and that does suck. Glad you're aware of what you can and can't do in VR, and just keep leaning into those experiences as much as you can. And maybe (maybe), using some of the pointers in the video, you might be able to get to a point where you are able to do more than you thought in VR. Fingers crossed!

With the right games and/or other apps installed its AWESOME! I'm spending at a minimum of 8 hrs. a day on my Quest 3. Just got done finishing all the Episodes and DLC's of both Star Wars (Darth Vader Immortal) and (Tales From The Galaxy's Edge) games. WOW!!!. I really need to give Kudo's to the Galaxy's Edge game. It really is the best Star Wars VR game I've ever played. I just wish there were more DLC's for it, but for the money, this is the SW game that will give you hours of enjoyment, especially if you like blasting the crap out of everything using iconic Star Wars firearms. I'm also 100% for the emersion. Even knowing I've truly enjoyed playing Star Wars Fallen Order and Jedi Outcast (on my PC), neither creates the feeling of being inside the universe. A good VR game truly offers us an escape from reality and places us inside our dream. Just imagine how incredible this will be in the next 5-10 years...💫 BTW... I was one of the 1st to gravitate to 3D TV's during the Tech boom. Still have one of the best Plasma TV's to play this content, but it really can't touch how much more enjoyable it is to wear a good quality VR headset and play top tier content. That is (IMHO) an absolute fact. TC

Love that you're enjoying VR this much as well, and the STAR WARS GAMES specifically! I've adored VADER IMMORTAL, and play it all the way through at least once a year. I really should finish GALAXY'S EDGE, as the two times I started it, I didn't LOVE it, and stopped. There were things I did like, but for some reason, I didn't feel as pulled into the STAR WARS universe in that one as I did in Vader Immortal, even though Vader Immortal is less a game, and more an experience. I should just give G.E. a full playthrough, and see how I feel then. I'm going to do that! Thanks for the great comment, and love how long you've been enjoying 3D content, as well as the full VR treatment!

@ Funny thing about you mentioning not playing through Galaxy’s Edge game during the beginning. I was just the opposite. I had purchased the first release of Vader Immortal back in my Quest 2 days. I started playing it, but didn’t necessary like the limited movement and low lit (dark) the environment was. It might have been a Quest 2 thing for me as I never used it nearly as much as I do the Quest 3. Either way, I would start to play Vader Immortal episode 1 and lose interest. I was skeptical about the Galaxy’s Edge game and didn’t buy it until about 3 weeks ago. It does require a learning curve, but once you become comfortable and proficient with the menus and upgrading your equipment it gets better, especially when you experience C3-P0 and R2-D2. The Icing on the cake is the DLC and that I really enjoyed. After finishing the game and everything thing it offered, I started playing Vader Immortal again. I had a better experience with it using the Quest 3 and actually finished it very quickly. I then purchased and downloaded both episode 2 and 3 and played them, but both were very short in adventure time and game play. To short actually, as I might be able to finish all three episodes in less than 2 hours. For the money, the Galaxy’s Edge game has so much more to offer. Both games are awesome for any Star Wars fan who is enjoying VR. 💥💥💥👍🏻

I agree with @charles here as well - and, I think it's one of those things that will get more common until we have AR glasses that can do what we all want them to do. I wear mine in public without shame now. Took a few times to not feel a little self-conscious, but if you think about smart phones, and bluetooth headphones, and anything like that, people were looked at strangely at first when they were used so much in public, and now they are every-day items.

I am using a quest 3 for a year now. Started standalone and bought a beefy pc for pcvr. Immersion is everything if you ask me. Even playing a flat game on the big screen is worlds better than ten 32inch monitor I have. I never get that much excitement out of a game when playing on the monitor. Like a adrenaline rush or being nervous or loosing my shit when suddenly an enemy appears. The immersion of the gunplay in something like Into the Radius is just not comparable to clicking a mouse to fire. A jammed weapon in the middle of the heat is just so much more scary in vr. I would rather spent 1k on a better headset (better contrast and resolution) than on a oled gaming monitor. Graphics quality and better titles is where things need to improve.

I mainly play Walkabout Mini-Golf and 11 Table Tennis and would buy a VR headset just to play those two games even if no other games were available. I would like to see developers take more chances and not just stick to some tried and true formula that ends up being just another hackneyed first-person-shooter or other well known genre. That seldom results in a blockbuster hollywood movie and the same applies to VR. I would also like to see more educational content, everything from history to VR electronic kits where you could learn to build functioning circuits from parts to actual online educational institutions where you could attend language or photography classes or anything where there is an interest and demand. My personal dream would be a functional VR Japanese Go club attended by thousands of members from around the world or a ham radio club where I could attend classes on morse code or antenna theory. Maybe that is a little niche, but still achievable goals once the numbers of VR users increase a bit more. We are still in the infancy of VR, but when mass adoption happens at some inflection point of even more sophisticated hardware and software all these scenarios are inevitable. I can dream, but in the meantime I use VR just about every day and get a tremendous amount of value and fun from what is already out there.

Love all you said here, and I agree very much. Although, I do need to try Eleven Table Tennis - I've heard the physics are incredibly accurate! And, for me, the last thing I need is more Zombie shooter games, even though one of my favorite experiences of all time is still WALKING DEAD SAINTST AND SINNERS. I do agree we get a bit too much of the "same", but at the same time, there are a lot of unique experiences out there, but they don't tend to get as much notice as the "big games." And wanting more educational stuff - I truly think that is a MAJOR future for VR. Imagine kids in schools going on virtual field trips to the pyramids together in their headsets, with full photogrammetry, and being led by their teacher. So many great opportunities there for sure! Thanks for the comment - love it!

The worst of vr is accesibility, until the Ques Pro I wasn't physically capable of enjoying it, the weight balance, the IPD, lenses, the straps..., for many people vr just hurts, even with good straps. VR has been partially excluyent, as any piece of tech, people that can barely see or that has daltonism, Windows has accesibility srttings, quest OS still hasn't. Other bad aspect is that not all the UI design lessons haven't been implemented.

GREAT points here! Yes, I have always felt that the toughest thing about VR mass-adoption is the fact that it's WEARABLE by default. And no two people have the same shaped heads, same eyes, same comfort, same acceptance of having something on their face, etc.... even getting too warm wearing a headset. I don't know how that ever gets fully fixed. You don't have to wear a monitor. But, the benefits are so overwhelming, I feel the more we do with design and options, the better it may continue to get, but most likely at the cost of FOV and great lenses, at least for a while, due to weight and such. But it's getting better every day. And, the UI - yeah, that's getting better too, but slowly as one company sees what another does, then tries to do.... that. Thanks for the comment!

That ability to connect so well with the character you're playing - that is amazing!

If you want feedback about your videos, I think you have most of the ingredients to become more popular. I love your energy. I think your subjects and thoughts are interesting. But what you need is brevity. I don't think it would be correct to say that you ramble. You really don't. But it takes you an excessive time to make each point, and I think it may be a combination of excessive preamble and/or repeating the point over and over in different ways. It does drive home each point thoroughly, but I think it becomes overkill. For most viewers, the point doesn't need to be pounded in that much. Your point is already successfully made by the time you're only half way done saying it. This video in itself I find interesting. These kinds of philosophical discussions about VR or the state of the industry or whatever is stuff I really like. But this video should have been 14 minutes, not 28 minutes. I think you could cut 50% out of the run time of each point, and the message would still be intact. I hope that's helpful feedback. (And yes, the irony that my own message lacks brevity is not lost on me)

Love the input, and I do see what you're saying! Always open to input like that, and will take that 100% into consideration going forward as well. Appreciate it much, and didn't mind the long comment at all! The detail helped much.... Keep VR-ing, and keep giving suggestions if you watch more of my videos going forward. Thanks much!

I've shown VR to 5 of my friends, and not one of them cared. Console users. So there's that.

I prefer watching KZbin or movies on a real TV. Other than that vr is awesome

I can totally get where you're coming from - and I'd say, I still watch much more on my TV than I do in VR, but I do notice how much I love the experience when I watch in VR, so I find myself doing that more and more.... Thanks for the comment!

Okay, I feel the headsets are abit too big and akward to wear, also the games are simple, a lot of them are stuff that feels like old-school rehash. Space pirate trainer is an example, its a simple game, thats fun in itself, but grows stale quick. I am just concerned it won't be interesting enough gamewise.

I do think the biggest challenge with VR is the WEARABLE aspect of it for sure. No two people's heads are the same, so it's hard to know how it will be for each person. HOWEVER, I can say that, with some relatively inexpensive accessories, the headsets can be much more comfortable for most, I believe, and you do get used to it the more you use it. But, I can understand where you're coming from for sure. As for the games - there are some truly FANTASTIC games that go so far beyond things like Space Pirate Trainer. Recommend giving it a try, if you can!
