Hello Mr. Hellinga! I´m from Luxembourg and every year i go to the Balaton lake and of course I visit Mr. Vrabel in Hungary. I´m very satisfied with all of his instruments! Some types of the hungarian hurdy-gurdys are rough, but they are beautiful in the sound... it depends what you like to do! I can observe a very positive evolution in the construction of his hurdy gurdys. Mr. Vrabel is a honest, nice and good instrument maker! What are you expecting, you can NOT have a cheap instrument and having "Stradivarius-Clean Sound"; you need time to know how to play this folk instrument; you need time to reflect your musical action! Visit the Pannonian Basin, visit Mr. Vrabel, you´ll discover a typical gentle hungarian master craftsmen!! Please do not delete my comment ... I think the Vrabel hurdy gurdy for such a price is really correct!!

There are cheap instruments that don't sound like broken kazoos. If he improved his craftsmanship recently, then that's good to hear, but you shouldn't have to jump through twenty hoops just to get an instrument functioning.

The 'Stradivarius' argument makes no sense. In the hurdy gurdy player scene we know that a good instrument does not need to be a Stradivarius in order to be playable. The tested instrument was simply not good, and as a gurdy player I am able to assess the quality of an instrument quite well. The maker can be a nice person but that does not mean the instruments are good. Either way, Mr Vrabel has sent me a newer instrument which definitely is a more appropriate reflection of the price and the new review will be online very soon.

I think this maker needs to up his game a lot. this kind of poor sounding machine wasnt acceptable back at the time in the early eighties when ignorance was abundant let alone now, jeez. well done Jimi for giving it a fair test, it certainly is a fair test despite what some might say. it's really terrible

i am from Galicia and play the hurdy gurdy. i can absolutely say that this gurdy has nothing to do with a galician style hurdy gurdy (well, maybe a bit of the style of the headstock, nothing more). i don't know where the galician model name comes from but it is completely off from our reality

Yes, I agree with that. This is the model name given by the maker. It could be due to the guitar body, just like the old zanfonas have but the name does not really make sense, just like the 'barokk' model, which has nothing to do with actual baroque instruments.

Hello! I was thinking of buying, do you mean the builder Mihály Vrábel? They are the only ones that make a cheap one, if you don't recommend it, what other builder do you recommend? Where can I find good models? and if it can be affordable. thank you.

If you want to learn to play, Look for something else. A cheap gurdy is not worth its money when the quality is bad and it does not work. Buy something that works. I bought a barok model, I had dozen modifications to do, to make it works, but that is not yet what I expected, it is my first , it is not expensive but to tell the true it can't more than that, this is almost a exhibition model ....

​@@pcdeh851 Yes of course , every hurdy gurdies request permanent tuning and a climatic attention, that is normal for any wood crafted acoustic instrument, the point in this case is that , it is NOT going to work out of the box as it should, now mine works good enough and is playing, but I can do much by my hand and most of keys was to readjust, as well as the bridges and wheel, the pegs are not even tighten in the holes, that was a hell, but now it works for I would say, very cheap in comparison with other famous instruments factors.

At last a person who agrees with me thst vrabel hurdy gurdys are essentially rubbish! I too have had the same experience ,it took me hours of work ,refurbishment,to put my vrabel gurdy right,including employing a luthiers to make my vrabrl gurdy play properly ! I ended up spending as much money putting it right as I'd spent on buying it in the first place !
