I entered a Dogfighting Tournament to fight planes using the complex Flight Sims that the Black Aces VRChat community has created. Going from 0 plane knowledge (I didn’t even know how to fly) to competing against EXPERTS who’ve been practicing for years… in only 10 days. I’ve NEVER put this much work into a video before ever, and definitely my wildest VR adventure yet :)

In a weird way, VRChat is starting to remind me of the early flash days. I used to play Restaurant City, flash games, and a lot more. Now, we're seeing the explosion of home-grown games and social experiences that are catered to very specific niche groups. And the best part? Indie devs care a LOT about replicating detail, while adding a layer of VR creativity. ​@@Justsomerandomdude101 Not sure about the vrchat game but if you want a nice vr flight sim check out VtolVR. If you want a really realistic experience go with DCS but that requires a lot of computing power and hundreds of hours of studying as it's almost one to one the exact same thing with real life VtolVR is still realistic and provides an opportunity to easily get into military aviation which is great so I'd 100% recommend it. It's a great experience with a great community

There are so many buttons with DCs if you skip the tutorial people be stuck on the runway pushing buttons hoping one of them is turning the engine on very tough game to learn but after you learned it it's a good game

Flight sim worlds are the only reason why I kept playing VRChat in the first place. Specifically, it was Test Pilots that got me hooked in 2021. Now I'm approaching 1000 hours of playtime and met some awesome people. I still fly from time to time but I don't dogfight.

You should try VTOL VR then. It's probably more difficult to learn, but closer to real experience from what real pilots say, and total newbie (like me before I started playing) can learn it using in-game tutorials.

Ah this is just awesome to see, I met sacchan (the creator of the flight system behind all of this) through a mutual friend, just so glad to see aviation covered, I havent been with the community for a while, but back in the early days I remember coming along to watch a friend of mine compete in the dog fight tourneys, the memories are all flooding back to me, I go to vrc to fly every once in a while still.

As a DCS user, im really impressed by this platform. I only knew vtol vr for entry-level players. But this proveed to be an even better way to get someone interested in simflight. If you feel like going deeper into it, i really recomend dcs. It can be threatning at first, but just like you experienced in this case, having a buddy that can teach you through the basics it's almost everything you need Nice video, im really happy that people are starting to notice how cool air combat really is

The system that these planes use does simplify some of the crunchy bits that tend to turn folks away from flight sims. So if it's the pile of 'switchology' you didn't like, but did like the turn-and-burn side of things, than you likely would enjoy it.

A very interesting video, and also pretty good flying. I'd not heard about flight sims in VR chat before, even though I'm into DCS and that sort of stuff. At 16:30 when you got shot down, the situation you were in wasn't a good one. Reversing the turn horizontally was the worst thing to do because your opponent would be in a good position to get a shot, you had too much separation. I know its tempting to reverse the turn in a situation like that because I used to do that a lot, and it usually ended with me getting shot down. The smartest thing to have done would probably have been to stick to the rate fight at that time, as you're in similar states for speed and altitude and you're in the same aircraft. Maybe trying to tighten down the circle a bit, dropping the nose to get some more airspeed, but still fundamentally sticking to the rate right and trying to out rate the opponent. What I would've tried (and this is probably, almost certainly, not smart but I somehow make it work when I'm in DCS and IL2 quite a lot) would've been to have dropped the nose and try cut across the circle. The idea is to try to get him in a downward rolling scissors where I can cheekily pull the airbrakes out or pull some high AoA to slow down and get him out in front, but for that I need him to follow me down. The problem is that it puts me at an altitude disadvantage when I try to cut across the circle, and he could use that to kill me. If he follows me down, great, if not then I can keep pulling up into a vertical turn to cut across the circle. On my way up, I can use flaps to try to get a bit of better turn rate, see if I can get my nose on him. Again, it wasn't a good position, a lot of things you could've done could've still ended badly, any way out fundamentally relied on your opponent making a mistake somehow.

@@Model1928 the way I see it, we're in a bit of a dark age with flight sims, there's not enough variety. DCS, IL2 and War Thunder have monopolies on their chosen markets, and VTOL VR is in a niche all on its own. We need variety to spice things up a bit and get ED, Gaijin and 1C back on their toes. What I see here is a bunch of aviation enthusiasts getting creative and making their own fun because there's not that much out there that fits into this niche. The community is open and friendly. The barriers to entry are small (for those who already have a VR set) compared to DCS or IL2. And it seems to have that balance between being real enough to be a sim, but without being punishing, so it's still fun to the novice. DCS has a lot of barriers to getting into it. The modules are expensive and you've got to have a decent HOTAS and VR or head tracking. And then there's actually learning how to fly these planes, searching for tutorials on the Hornet and you'll find the Grim Reapers' tutorial play list is 100+ videos; Wags is at least 30+, and Spud does videos getting on for an hour long. It's intimidating. I'm still learning new things with the Hornet about 8 months after first flying it. Flying the Tomcat, I know how to fly it but I have much to learn, again even after a good couple of months of my friends teaching me. With IL2, again it's expensive to get into with the modules and the HOTAS. War Thunder is just cursed. I think the reason I still play it is insanity. The cost with War Thunder is either your dignity by buying premium or your time (and sanity) by grinding it out without premium (I did the latter because... Well I had nothing better to do during Covid lockdown XD). The guys I fly with now, we started flying on FSX when covid first started. We already knew each other as we were all in the same Air Cadets squadron, but we spent our evenings on FSX doing circuits, formation flying and some BFM with the Hornets (rule was we had to keep the HUD whisky mark over the target for 3 seconds). Yeah, we eventually went to War Thunder and then DCS when we had computers capable of running it, but what started it all was the fact that FSX Steam Edition was cheap as chips and our computers back then could run it. Does it really matter what Sim we use? No. What matters is the experience of coming together to have fun with others.

You should try and go for a discovery flight and consider getting your private pilots license! If you enjoyed learning about flying in game, flying in real life is cool and fun as well!

That was what I was thinking. I imagine that at some point VR-based flight sim lessons could be common, maybe FAA certified for certain aspects in the way in-person flight sim use is currently. Being able to hop into Xplane with a headset on, and an instructor sitting in the right seat virtually, talking through the flight and pointing things out where you can see their hands moving and they can gesture, use a knee board, etc, just as you do in normal instruction time, that'd be great! Getting a PPL is very expensive. Even if you have someone lending their instruction time and airplane for free, and you just have to cover gas, you're talking approx $50 per hour for 40 hours. So any sim time is win time in my book.

This is actually so cool! Many games try to be multi-game like (Minecraft, Roblox, Fortnite, and I dunno... other games?), that try to make games in the mini-games itself, by the community of the players. But this being one of the most realistic ones, with the great and open community of VRChat, might be my favourite one!
