Great video Carl! 100% agree here. To go even one further I often see coaches/instructors giving "fitness classes" instead of aiming to improve on Martial Art skills and learning.

I used to do Shotokan Karate 20 years back, then had a huge break, abandoned my body completely (playing video games, then working at the desk day and night...). A few years ago, I decided to do something about it and went to a gym for a year... My cardio and the body in general had improved, but I absolutely HATED what I was doing, something was missing, the mindless sweating was just not my cuppa... So I stopped again. Now, after all these years, I've taken up ITF Taekwon-DO and I know EXACTLY what that missing component was. And this video of yours has just confirmed that. Thanks for your time and dedication to create this channel, I hope you'll maintain it and update it in the future (looking forward to some stretching routines for high kicks, opening your hips, for instance!). Cheers!

I was supecting that you would say smt like that. 😊It totally resonates with me. Unfortunately, I found my way to martial arts only a year ago at 47. But it hit me like a dump truck. I was never keen on "working out", I still am not. But training?! YAAAASSS! I am hooked on it. To monitor potential 🤭 progress, I tape the personal training sessions so I can recap what I need to work on. There is a whole lot of work ahead of me, and I am going to LOVE every single second of it - once my doc gives me the good news that my achilles tendon is not ruptured. 🤞🤞🤞

Hello Van Roon, I think ur an amazing teacher and martial artist. I am aware that you have been involved in training some MMA/ufc fighters and thats quite amazing seeing TKD transfer over to other sports etc. It would be nice to see some more content on youtube... I notice ur shorts/tik tok clips on my facebook which i dont have regular access to. Could you maybe post some shorts or here or something to keep the channel fresh...

I’m older. I have to work out, so that I can’t train efficiently and effectively. My work outs employ, weight lifting, coordination drills, boxing speed, agility and flexibility work outs, particularly with my legs. Now, I absolutely agree that you require focus when you train, but for me, I need to work out to be able to train.
@VanRoonMartialArts5 жыл бұрын
I still call that training :D I don't just mean Martial Arts training. I've been doing supplementary strength and conditioning, flexibility, mindset training etc. for 20 years. I don't mean these aren't effective or important. But it's how you lift the weights, how you stretch and how you adapt that to your ultimate goals - in my case, to be the best martial artist I can be. Peace!

Great comment/explanation Carl. Thanks. I take the opportunity to ask you: Im 57 years old, started Karate 7 years ago and after discipline and continuous training recently obtained my Shodan level. Have you seen older students able to really master kicks? Kicks are my weakness so your input/advice is highly regarded. Thanks for your amazing tutorials, they inspire me to train.Regards. Javier

Great advice. A clear intention. I also find that a mental training session say working on the spinning back kick for example. So i will be sat or laid down and i will practice getting the technique correct in my mind. This sort of mental practice has been proven to work for example on actually building muscle size by upto 10%. I know it works or at least i know this works for me. This comes from the biology of belief. Thanks for another great video.

So true- I have my own training plan for sparring and find when I want to focus on a particular element, it does not always align with what is done in class. So just turning up to a general TKD class can be frustrating. Can you do a video on training plans? Awesome video sir as always.

Dear sensei, Firstly, your mindset of training is inspiring. Would you be able to make a video or perhaps include in a video, some advice of how to avoid groin pain and hip pain during training? I work my leg flexibility 1-2 times a week for a full hour, but on days that I work the heavy bag with my kicks I do a 10-min workout but after a little while of kicking when I extend my legs I start to feel sharp pain in my groin whenever I proceed the reps. Has it got something to do with my warmup? Overall flexibility? Are you familiar with this condition? Arigato
@VanRoonMartialArts5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your message. My advice would be to look into strengthening those muscles that complain or tense up with sharp pain the most. Something that seems to be a common misconception is that tight muscles are strong but inflexible. Actually very often the tightest muscles are the weakest muscles. On a neural level (the nervous system) they are fighting to maintain tension as 'they' are unsure if they are strong enough to maintain stability if you move through a greater range of motion. So if you can strengthen your adductors (groin) and hamstrings etc rather than simply stretching, this may help. Cheers CvR
@Stylo45 жыл бұрын
@@VanRoonMartialArts Wow I appreciate your quick and focused response. When I come to think of it I do no strength / resistance training to my groin or the inner thigh muscles which hurts the most when kicking. Definitely going to add some training to those and see if this helps. Thanks alot!!

I guess im in the categories of workout then. Cause I do weights to be in shape 3days a wk and 2 days kickboxing for cardio. Im not a fighter im just someone trying to be active.
@VanRoonMartialArts5 жыл бұрын
Weights are great. Running is too. I think you're missing my point. It's how you do the weights and running etc. If you run just for the sake of it, that is different than running intervals that are the duration of rounds, or specifically doing sprints to be more explosive as a martial artist (even if you're not a fighter) or using weight training in a way that is specific or supports your goals as a martial artist rather than simply lifting like a recreational body builder let's say
