True, but when Michael talks about "what is consciousness/intelligence/sentience" it's always in terms of "if a tree doesn't make a sound, has it really fallen?" which feels like a middle finger to science to me. We use science to find out what we can't deduce with our senses, to understand reality beyond our random guesses, and faith in other people's untested guesses. We now know that lightning, thunder, eclipses, and earthquakes are not one or more gods letting us know they're pissed off. To say "if you don't have language, are you really conscious?" is, I think, backsliding into our old ways of thinking from caveman days. I love Stevens, I love Mindfield and Vsauce, but this part of his logic really pisses me off. In fact, I'm gonna earthquake his house right now!

I don't know man. I think you've got thoughts and experiences mixed up. To have thoughts about something we have to have context. We have to have a language to frame those thoughts and give it context. There are two types of feelings, one of feeling cold or hungry (physical) and one of feeling happy or sad (emotional). We can experience the physical feelings without language/context but we need language/context to feel happy or sad. We need a language to frame our thoughts and give context but not to experience physical things. That's my theory anyway.

For anyone wondering, when Vsauce was talking about the different levels of the multiverse... A level 1 multiverse is the idea that if you travel in one direction long enough you will eventually leave our universe and enter a new one. Essentially all universes exist in the same 3 dimensions. A level 2 multiverse is the idea that there is a sort of higher dimension omniversal membrane that exists throughout spacetime where bubbles containing universes with different laws of physics form, combine and die over time. A level 3 multiverse is the typical multiverse shown in media where there exist copies of the same universe but where one thing is slightly different or you made a slightly different choice. Like Rick and Morty. A level 4 multiverse, or "mathematical multiverse" is like a level 3 but to the extent that every possible mathematical model is real and physical. I feel like life has no meaning without death. It's what makes life exciting and makes us ambitious. There's always gotta be a balance for meaning. No good without evil, no light without dark, no hapiness without sadness. That's why ive always thought heaven would be boring, for an ETERNITY ur always immensley happy, you have no comparison so it means nothing to you. Ur just a robot programmed to always be in a state of bliss, same thing with hell, always programmed to be in agony. It has no purpose and that emotion/feeling becomes baseline. Everything about reality requires a balance.
