As I remember it, Tsar Bomba was not detonated high to reduce damage at ground level...it was to ENHANCE it. You detonate nukes at higher altitudes because the closer to the ground, the more of the energy just gets reflected upward and is wasted. When exploded high you get a much larger lateral component of the shock wave and thermal pulse and a lot more widespread ground damage. Tsar Bomba's reflected shock wave actually prevented the fireball from touching the ground, that speaks to the power of that aspect of that explosion. When you get to nukes that size, the overpressure created is a much more useful destructive element than the fireball.

Incredibly, the Tsar Bomba was also weakened near to its detonation. It was originally going to be double the power that was eventually detonated, but there were questions about its impact on the entire Soviet Union. At reactions that size, there was no telling the kind of detrimental effects it could have on the atmosphere. It is crazy that we reached a point where we can effectively blow up Earth itself, and we've had to pull ourselves back 😅

Ground explosions also produce much more radiation pollution as everything around becomes ionized, so it's better to explode higher

According to this wikipedia article [1] it took ~700 years to transfer from Broze Swords to Iron Swords, I found this thread [2] which claims that the last organized use of iron swords were in 1939, which means that the transition took ~6 years. Of course, this is ignoring the fact that this isn't really a good comparison, as nuclear weapons by no way "replaced" swords, rather guns were likely the culprit for swords falling out of fashion, like with pretty much all medieval weaponry. Nuclear weapons really more serve as a tool of diplomacy rather than a weapon, as the threat of mutually assured destruction tend to keep the world leaders at bay. Hence why for example countries like Pakistan and India, despite hating eachother's guts, have managed to refrain from going to all out war at eachother (barring the Kashmir conflict, but that's more of a proxy war than anything).
