If anyone is watching these now, a week before the exam, it is important to note that despite having lone pairs, square planar molecules are NON-polar!

Absolutely!

Can someone please elaborate what that means? I'm very confused with molecular geometry and how to answer these type of AP question.

@@thewhat2 a square planar molecule has 4 sigma bonds and two lone pairs. The two lone pairs are located directly opposite to each other, and therefore they cancel each other out, making the molecule nonpolar overall.

You know, I have been searching on KZbin for like a week to understand this concept rather than just catching it without any sense, but now I fully get and understand everything behind it. Thank you so much, sir!

12:38 - isn’t T-Shaped two lone pairs and three bonded atoms?
@JeremyKrug
@JeremyKrug 24 күн бұрын
No, that would be trigonal planar (the 'other' trigonal planar). T-shaped is 3 bonded atoms & 3 unshared pairs.

@@JeremyKrug My teacher also said that T-shaped is two longe pairs and three bonded atoms. 5 electron groups

Hi Mr Krug. Thanks so much for these amazing video!! your lessons are very helpful. I had one question about the angle for 3 sigma bonds and 2 lone pairs.. is it actually 120 ? or should it less than 90? Thank you
@JeremyKrug
@JeremyKrug 5 күн бұрын
Thank you for your kind words and for your question! You are correct; there was a mistake on that slide, which I'll be correcting in an upcoming video. The structure for 3 sigma bonds and 2 lone pairs is actually T-shaped, with bond angles of 87° and 172°.

what happens if there are 2 or more unshared pairs of electrons on the central molecule? how does that affect the polarity
@JeremyKrug
@JeremyKrug 4 ай бұрын
If the shared pairs are on completely opposite sides (such as in square planar), they can cancel each other out and be nonpolar. Much of the time though, multiple unshared pairs of electrons are centered on one side of the molecule, such as in a bent structure, and makes the molecule polar.

Do you have any suggestions to memorizing this?
@JeremyKrug
@JeremyKrug 2 ай бұрын
I recommend to students that they try to visualize the shapes; I really think that helps. For example, "trigonal planar" is literally a flat triangle. Most of the names of shapes are very closely related to the shapes themselves. The main bond angles are 109.5, 120, 90, and 180.

When drawing a Lewis diagram do we need to account for the molecular geometry??? If we don’t do we lose points on exams 😢
@JeremyKrug
@JeremyKrug 3 ай бұрын
If the question asks for the molecular geometry, then you do need to say it. If it just asks for the Lewis diagram, or electron-dot diagram, then you don't have to say the molecular geometry.
