Three different approaches to hand painting with under glazes. Using paper stencils to make colours pop and how to use a paint brush shape to make painting simpler and easy to do.

The other day I was looking up some rutile and blue glazes I've logged but not yet tried. I located them in the May 86 CM and to my great pleasure I saw the article which describes using stencils by you and Jackie. Given my sensibilities back then I never registered it but now I'm so pleased to be able to read and enjoy it in full. My only complaint: Pity color was so expensive to print back then. Always enjoying your videos, so please carry on. Thanks!

So relaxing to watch Vaughan. With a few years under your belt you make it look so easy and flowing. Do you prefer the results using the underglaze on greenware? Today I will be putting a stencil over a walnut underglaze that was painted on a biscuit fired pot. I will be putting a glaze over the stencil and will probably put a transparent clear over the creatures once the stencil has been peeled off. Cheers and be well...Freddie
@Vsmithpots3 жыл бұрын
Hi Freddie, I prefer to stencil over greenware just softer than leather hard. The soft clay helps stick the paper down. I have seen people use self adhesive labels on bisque ware. Stay safe.

This is such a GREAT technique!! I absolutely love everything you do!! I was wondering if you by chance know what brand of brushes you used for this? I have bought several kinds and they are all very poor quality no matter how much I pay for them. The bristles come out as well. I’d love to know how you like the fundamental underglazes as well. I also used to use Duncan.
@Vsmithpots3 жыл бұрын
I have the same problems with brushes. I bought one from a craftsperson at a show in Syracuse NY, years ago. It was my favourite brush for over a decade but it wore out. The lady was from Vancouver , I wish I could find her again, she made great brushes. I think it is luck when you find one that works well, I have lots that just get too bulky without a good point. The Fundamental underglazes are just as good as Duncan. Thanks for watching.

First I would like to thank you because you help me realize that I overthink way too much when it comes to decorating pottery the second thing I would like to ask you is do you put a glaze over the top of your pots or do you just fire them with underglaze I am confused about this your help would be greatly appreciated

After you attached the paper stencil did you just go over each one with water in your paint brush? Are you working on green ware or bisque ware? Enjoying your video’s….just wished you didn’t time lapse as I enjoy every aspect of the process. Keep them coming!

I use water to hold the paper down on softish clay, not quite leather hard.

Thank you, Vaughan. So helpful. Were the large planters bone dry when you decorated them? Having to keep them leather hard while working would seem very awkward. Your work is inspiring to this 70 year old potter! I'm firing red earthenware with a cream slip over top at Cone 03.
@Vsmithpots3 жыл бұрын
The pots were just under leather hard and quite soft at the bottom. By the time I finished the tops were dry. Thanks.

@@Vsmithpots Thanks so much for that, Vaughan. I am planning to slip a couple of plates today, brush on some coloured slips, apply some paper stencils and brush on more colour. Your calm, reassuring manner is such a delight. And thanks again for responding. I think your work is terrific.
@Vsmithpots3 жыл бұрын
@@jsdhornby Thanks, just make sure the slips are not applied too thickly.
@jsdhornby3 жыл бұрын
@@Vsmithpots Thanks. I will. My coloured slips are 30 frit, 40 ball, and 30 stain, so the colour should be strong enough for a thinnish coat. Hopefully. Thanks, again. I really appreciate it.
