Hi! I have always trimmed a mug, then added the handle. Why do you add the handle first?
@VsmithpotsКүн бұрын
I do not have to score and scratch, then add slip. I also throw thin so I don't have to trim the wall, just the foot. Thanks for asking.

Random question for you- how do you know pieces are still food safe if you combine different glazes (even if each glaze individually is food safe?) I've always wondered!
@Vsmithpots3 күн бұрын
I have also wondered that but that is why I use Mastering Cone 6 Glaze book and other published glaze books, I doubt they would run the risk of publishing glazes that are dangerous. They also cover them selves by adding all potters should test their glazes to ensure safety. With so many glaze combos out there the only thing you can do is test every piece you make by placing a lemon slice on a piece for 24 hours and see if there is an etched marker. Also never under fire pieces, a fully mature glaze is safest. It is a huge extra expense to have glazes tested by a lab for every variation. One caution is never leave lemon, tea or orange juice in a pottery container in the fridge, for long periods. I also wonder about lead crystal decanters with all that brandy stored for weeks or months. There is a reason they say Lead crystal. At 70 in January and using my pottery since 1973 I think my own glazes have proven pretty benign.

Do the layers of slip significantly increase the thickness of the piece, or is the slip mixture quite thin? Those stencil pieces are always so amazing.
@Vsmithpots3 күн бұрын
It does add depth but minimal. the last layer is usually the heaviest.

Thank you for showing a bit of how you use the scroll saw. Could you maybe do a more in depth tutorial on how to do it? What type of blade, how to get a clean cut, intricate designs and so on. It would also be nice to see how you do the spraying. Lovely video and piece. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year 🎄🎆🇨🇦🇩🇰

I did one of these. It was a 17th century thing found in a French farm house. I chose to throw two bowls joined to create a closed form ( because I can't yet throw a closed form). Then threw two funnels and the handle and joined them first before I pierced two holes at the top of my closed form to join the funnels. It was a great project and I will do this again with all kinds of variation. The original had crystal glaze and was quite beautiful, I soda fired mine so it had a more rustic look.

Thanks for noticing, I am pretty naive and continue to believe in people and there better angels, but alas you are right to think otherwise. Who knows what people are able to do with personal information these days. I clicked on a link to a site and the next day I had 5o+ emails from them. It appears KZbin was able to edit out the info with a blur, I learned something new today.
