Great video. Really well explained. I had the 1.5 vtec-e engine in an EK3 civic. What an engine that was! 70mph in second gear. Really long gear ratios. Had it 5 years and only spent money on service items. Bullet proof. But the rear arches were prone to bad corrosion.

Because there are three possible states that I could be possibly in: a living state, a dead state, and the combination of both being dead and alive. Thus, I am not one of the dead states. This is due because of the linear combinations of all solutions to my equation, The Schrodinger Equation (a partial differential equation). Even thou quantum mechanics dictates all solutions may exists, some solutions are very highly unlikely, in some cases, the probability is virtually 0 (like me being still alive)... however, it can not be 0. In other words, according to quantum mechanics, there are things that are impossible happening in the universe all the time. This is observed all the time at the molecular level, like bonds, spontaneously occurring within molecules, that aren't suppose to exists. Furthermore, I have swag.

I love i-Vtec on my 2007 tsx stock K24a2 205hp. Fast 4 cylinder car for 2007. It keeps up with my brothers 13 Vw Gti which is 6 years newer, more aerodynamic an has a stock turbo.

I just bought my first Honda. A 2008 Honda Fit with a 1.5L V-TEC engine. That thing has good power for being such a little engine and still gets 36.5 mpg running down interstate with the windows rolled down at 75 mph! Love this car.

I've had 5 Hondas. B series, F series, D series, J series and H series. The VTEC kick in the H22 is the only one that feels like a slight kick in the ass. Sounds brutal too, much more pronounced than my B series sounded. Loud induction noise and it sounds like you took earplugs out when it hits. AEM intake and Magnaflow exhaust.

That was a pretty good explanation and something I've always wanted to know. I'm on my 3rd consecutive V-TEC engine and overall, my 5th consecutive OHC engine, starting with the previously owned vehicle: 1991 Honda Prelude Si, previously owned 1996 Acura Integra LS SE (5MT), my currently owned 2003 Acura CL-Type S 6MT, my previously owned 2010 Acura TL Tech SH-AWD 6MT (totaled in a collision), and my 2019 Acura TLX A-SPEC SH-AWD. My wife also owns a 2005 Hyandai Sonata V-6 that has a DOHC layout. Update: In 2022, I purchased Her a new Acura ILX A-SPEC, which is equipped with a 2.4 liter DOHC naturally aspirated DFI I-4 engine; however, I’m not sure if whether it is a V-TECH or I V TECH configuration.

@@The_Touring_Jedi That’s what I’m trying to do. It’s at the dealer right now for sudden onset, over-the-night lack of acceleration problems. Diagnosis: sudden failure of the catalytic converter. It been replaced twice before at the dealership but with recommended aftermarket ones. Cheaper but sometimes wonder if I should have went with the factory one. It was back in 2015, over $2000.00 without labor and additional parts. I believe it would have been a re-manufactured one too. Right now the dealer has me in a loaner 2024 blue Acura TLX A-SPEC with the SH-AWD package until my CL-Type S is repaired. I’m considering buying one so this a great way to evaluate it to help with that decision.

K20a3 only have cam phasing. K20a2 have both cam phasing and variable valve timing. Same with the K24a4 2003 Accord have cam phasing only and the K24a2 2006 TSX have both cam phasing and variable valve timing.

Just to share more technical knowledge about Honda's i-VTEC because I've got nothing better to do. To further explain the misconception at 4:06, Honda made many versions of their "i-VTEC" systems. The performance oriented i-VTEC incorporated valve lift and timing on both the intake and exhaust side. Engines like the K20A, K20A2, K20Z1, K24A2, and K24A3 have the performance version of i-VTEC. Some engines like the K20A3 and K24A8 only had "i-VTEC-E." Those engines don't incorporate variable valve lift, only a 12 to 16 valve switch over and variable valve timing. These engines usually produce more low-end torque and have better fuel efficiency as mentioned in the video. However, they don't rev as high and make less top-end power. In addition, their switch over is extremely early in the rev range and barely noticeable. There is another version of i-VTEC that incorporates variable valve lift, but only on the intake cam. Engines like the K24Z3 have this version of i-VTEC where VVL only occurs on the intake side. Both intake and exhaust sides still have VTC, so this systems sets itself in the middle of performance and fuel economy. You can generally tell the different K-Series engines apart by the intake manifold cover. If the lettering is red, then the engine has real "i-VTEC." If the manifold cover has black lettering or no lettering at all, it's most likely the "economy i-VTEC." I'd love to hear more facts from fellow Honda fans and enthusiasts. Thanks!

Great video bud, well said. I bought a used 2015 Honda cr-v LX 2wd back in March of this year with only 35,000 miles. My question is that I feel this vibration coming from the engine compartment and you'll see the passenger seat shake a little and me personally, I don't have a problem with it but I've heard stories that what's causing this is coming from the crank or something to do with the connecting rods not being balanced. Now that worried me because I built engines and that is not good. Have you heard about this with these engines? If you know anything about this or if ya could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. Thank you for your video and take care sir.

So i just wanted to comment this to see if i'm wrong or not. If any of you can correct me, thanks! Honda also has I-VTEC in their R-Series engines and the J-Series engines, which also operate differently. The first one operates in a reverse fashion, using a modified SOHC VTEC that has 1 small cam and 2 big ones. The small one activates with VTEC, which is also activates from low to mid RPMs. The J-Series uses VCM (variable cylinder management) to make an engine run on more or less cylinders depending on it's needs.

No worries, the DAF-X on the manifold are build to withstand 28 tons of torque pr square inch at 120mph. And the hypercoolers in the block, if connected properly to the ricers, can easily withstand the revving on vtec via a passive mechanic called "hyperflation". The piston rings however, just need to be tightened properly to the pumpshaft on the turbo.

I have this saved so I don't have to keep typing to explain. Let's use the K series for example. It has performance i-VTEC engines that feature VTEC on both camshafts, economy i-VTEC engines that feature VTEC only on the intake side, and the other economy i-VTEC engines that feature integrated exhaust manifolds. With economy i-VTEC, it doesn't "kick in" like traditional VTEC, its for fuel economy lol. Basically the economy i-VTEC only "kicks in" when driving like a grandma with a steady throttle and not the lead foot like her grandchild lol. It is not like the iconic SI with performance cams that kick in around 5k RPM. And yes I know VTEC kicks in at different RPM then 5k on the SI, but is it performance or economy? VTEC is meant to have high performance at high RPM and low fueI consumption at low RPM period, i-VTEC just made that more intelligent and confusing with its three types of i-VTEC lol. R18 engine for example is a version of an economy oriented i-VTEC that is different (even different then VTEC-e, 3-stage i-VTEC). Under the right engine load and engine speed conditions the eco i-VTEC system switches to a cam that delays the intake cam closure by extending the duration so that the piston pushes out fuel-air mixture back through the intake causing the engine to operate in an Atkinson-Cycle mode. The loss in power from going into the Atkinson cycle is compensated for automatically by the ECU opening up the throttle more (without you having to adjust with your foot on the accelerator). So it improves fuel economy two-fold by (1) reducing pumping loss by opening of the throttle body plate to give less restriction to the intake path and (2) going into the Atkinson-Cycle which uses fuel more efficiently by having a longer combustion stroke than effective intake stroke giving more time for the fuel-air mixture to combust. This also decreases emissions but who cares about that lol. There is no VTEC characteristic torque bump either. VTEC is a tricksy hobbit. All kinds of conditions. Engine RPM, vehicle speed, engine load, throttle position, coolant temperature, oil pressure etc. Can't just think RPM with VTEC kids, so many variables in this equation. Okay Economy i-VTEC explained: Although similar in many ways, the economy i-VTEC version of Honda's variable valve timing is different enough to command its own nickname. Much like Honda's emissions-conscious VTEC-E of the mid-1990s, impressive power figures were not the primary concern when developing these engines. Most notably, their exhaust camshafts are stripped of VTEC and their intake camshafts feature only two lobes and two rocker arms per cylinder instead of three. Prior to VTEC engagement, economy i-VTEC engines make use of only a single intake valve per cylinder, even though they do indeed feature 16-valve cylinder heads. The remaining intake valve cracks open slightly-just enough to prevent unburned fuel from pooling up behind itself. Also known as valve idling, the process allows the engine to operate using a conservative amount of fuel at low engine speeds with improved power at higher engine speeds when both valves open and close normally. Even VTEC is tuned differently, with low emissions paramount. As a result, a unique swirl develops inside of the combustion chambers as well as an extremely lean air/fuel mixture, resulting in impressive combustion and fuel efficiency, but not a whole lot of power. At a predetermined engine speed, the secondary intake valve opens, at which time the valvetrain operates, as you'd expect. Unfortunately, overall lift and duration don't increase like with traditional VTEC engines. Unlike performance i-VTEC cylinder heads, economy i-VTEC top-ends also exhibit an awkward groove cut into the walls between each intake valve, which plays a role in their single-valve VTEC operation, but costs in terms of airflow and performance. To the disappointment of Honda fans everywhere, as of the 2012 model year, only economy i-VTEC engines are offered. Underneath, economy i-VTEC engines share some of the same characteristics as the performance-oriented K-series. The blocks are essentially the same, the crankshafts are similar but not as thoroughly counter-weighted, and their connecting rods share similar geometry albeit a generally thinner and weaker design. Their pistons are where most of the differences lie, though. To help with emissions, many economy i-VTEC pistons feature a rounded dish on top that, together with their curious intake valve operation, help further promote the swirling effect. Economy i-VTEC engines are also missing under-piston oil squirters (although provisions for them are still there), which help promote lower temperatures but aren't necessarily needed when upgrading to forged pistons. VVT will give more torque from 1000rpm to 3000rpm, and then a drop off until VTEC kicks in around 6000rpm giving another torque boost to near redline.

Reeally weird question. My dad owns a 14 civic si with the 24 with Ivtec. He's owned Honda's exclusively since the 70s. And he really misses the aggressive snap of the older vtecs. It makes it even worse because I own a modified S2000 which has an exceptionally loud and agressive vtec snap. He wants to know if there's anyway to tune the snap back in? Even if he loses a bit of med range from it. It's more about the fun for him.

I’m a bit late but the K24 only have vtec on the intake and not exhaust like the s2000. He could swap a k20 head onto it relatively easily and get vtec in intake and exhaust
5k even is where vtec engages on my b18c5. i should note it is running a custom tune.

I'm pretty sure you had a f22 sohc normal lift changeover vtec. One of the only vtec-e engine that is marketed as a vtec-e that i know of in north america is the civic vx's d15. The other engine is the vfr v4 engine that's kind of a vtec-e.

Hopefully I don't have any mix ups, have proof read it a few times and added corrections to auto corrects that mixed up VTEC, VTC, i-VTEC and VTEC-E. Let me know if there is anything incorrect. I have this saved so I don't have to keep typing to explain. Let's use the K series for example. It has performance i-VTEC engines that feature VTEC on both camshafts, economy i-VTEC engines that feature VTEC only on the intake side, and the other economy i-VTEC engines that feature integrated exhaust manifolds. With economy i-VTEC, it doesn't "kick in" like traditional VTEC, its for fuel economy lol. Basically the economy i-VTEC only "kicks in" when driving like a grandma with a steady throttle and not the lead foot like her grandchild lol. It is not like the iconic SI with performance cams that kick in around 5k RPM. And yes I know VTEC kicks in at different RPM then 5k on the SI, but is it performance or economy? VTEC is meant to have high performance at high RPM and low fueI consumption at low RPM period, i-VTEC just made that more intelligent and confusing with its three types of i-VTEC lol. R18 engine for example is a version of an economy oriented i-VTEC that is different (even different then VTEC-e, 3-stage i-VTEC). Under the right engine load and engine speed conditions the eco i-VTEC system switches to a cam that delays the intake cam closure by extending the duration so that the piston pushes out fuel-air mixture back through the intake causing the engine to operate in an Atkinson-Cycle mode. The loss in power from going into the Atkinson cycle is compensated for automatically by the ECU opening up the throttle more (without you having to adjust with your foot on the accelerator). So it improves fuel economy two-fold by (1) reducing pumping loss by opening of the throttle body plate to give less restriction to the intake path and (2) going into the Atkinson-Cycle which uses fuel more efficiently by having a longer combustion stroke than effective intake stroke giving more time for the fuel-air mixture to combust. This also decreases emissions but who cares about that lol. There is no VTEC characteristic torque bump either. VTEC is a tricksy hobbit. All kinds of conditions. Engine RPM, vehicle speed, engine load, throttle position, coolant temperature, oil pressure etc. Can't just think RPM with VTEC kids, so many variables in this equation. Okay Economy i-VTEC explained: Although similar in many ways, the economy i-VTEC version of Honda's variable valve timing is different enough to command its own nickname. Much like Honda's emissions-conscious VTEC-E of the mid-1990s, impressive power figures were not the primary concern when developing these engines. Most notably, their exhaust camshafts are stripped of VTEC and their intake camshafts feature only two lobes and two rocker arms per cylinder instead of three. Prior to VTEC engagement, economy i-VTEC engines make use of only a single intake valve per cylinder, even though they do indeed feature 16-valve cylinder heads. The remaining intake valve cracks open slightly-just enough to prevent unburned fuel from pooling up behind itself. Also known as valve idling, the process allows the engine to operate using a conservative amount of fuel at low engine speeds with improved power at higher engine speeds when both valves open and close normally. Even VTC is tuned differently, with low emissions paramount. As a result, a unique swirl develops inside of the combustion chambers as well as an extremely lean air/fuel mixture, resulting in impressive combustion and fuel efficiency, but not a whole lot of power. At a predetermined engine speed, the secondary intake valve opens, at which time the valvetrain operates, as you'd expect. Unfortunately, overall lift and duration don't increase like with traditional VTEC engines. Unlike performance i-VTEC cylinder heads, economy i-VTEC top-ends also exhibit an awkward groove cut into the walls between each intake valve, which plays a role in their single-valve VTEC operation, but costs in terms of airflow and performance. To the disappointment of Honda fans everywhere, as of the 2012 model year, only economy i-VTEC engines are offered. Underneath, economy i-VTEC engines share some of the same characteristics as the performance-oriented K-series. The blocks are essentially the same, the crankshafts are similar but not as thoroughly counter-weighted, and their connecting rods share similar geometry albeit a generally thinner and weaker design. Their pistons are where most of the differences lie, though. To help with emissions, many economy i-VTEC pistons feature a rounded dish on top that, together with their curious intake valve operation, help further promote the swirling effect. Economy i-VTEC engines are also missing under-piston oil squirters (although provisions for them are still there), which help promote lower temperatures but aren't necessarily needed when upgrading to forged pistons. NOW Performance i-VTEC explained: Unofficially known as performance i-VTEC, such engines feature Honda's most impressive valvetrain to date. At the heart is something you've heard of: VTEC. Like its predecessors, inside the cylinder head lies Honda's hydraulically operated variable valve timing system. Simple and elegant, VTEC allows the engine to alternate between two different camshaft profiles depending on various conditions. In terms of i-VTEC engines, though, there's more, and it's called Variable Timing Control (VTC). Here, a specialized camshaft gear allows for continuously variable intake camshaft phasing throughout the RPM range. Based upon all sorts of things that the driver needn't worry about, like camshaft position, ignition timing, exhaust oxygen content, and throttle position, a 50-degree range of camshaft phasing can occur (25-degree range on K24A2). Much like VTEC, the camshaft gear is electronically controlled and hydraulically driven, resulting in reduced timing at idle and advanced timing at higher engine speeds, which increases valve overlap and power. Fittingly, the "i" in i-VTEC stands for intelligent and, together, VTEC and VTC offer an unprecedented balance between performance and emissions. The advantages up top span beyond the valvetrain. In terms of airflow, performance i-VTEC cylinder heads shame even the best of B-series top ends. This is, in part, due to oversized valves-2 mm larger than B-series VTEC engines. Performance i-VTEC engines also feature more optimally shaped intake and exhaust ports when compared to the B-series and larger ports when compared to other K-series engines. On the intake side, they form a nearly straight path. On the exhaust side, they're free of the humps typically found within B-series ports. K-series engines also benefit from sophisticated roller rocker arms, which reduce valvetrain friction and allow for all manner of billet camshafts. This is in stark contrast to older Honda engines that feature standard, pad-style rocker arms. Down below, every 2.0L engine features a 86mm bore and 86mm stroke. Also known as a square design, such engine architectures are a good compromise between decent low-end torque and adequate top end power. The 2.4L engine's over-square design, which features a longer stroke and slightly larger bore, results in more torque, but at the expense of any additional top end power. In terms of crankshafts, each is forged from high-quality steel, but only performance i-VTEC versions feature a fully counter-weighted design. Performance i-VTEC engines also feature under-piston oil squirters for increased cooling, stronger connecting rods and, generally, higher-compression pistons. In terms of North American-spec and Japanese-spec K-series engines, the K20A2, K20Z1, K20Z3, K24A2, K20A, and K24A all share a similar i-VTEC architecture. Although engine geometry and ancillaries such as intake manifolds, throttle bodies, and exhaust manifolds may differ between them, they all share more in common than not and make up some of the most desirable K-series engines

VVT-I (Variable valve timing with Intelligence) engines have variable valve timing only on the intake side. It optimizes the air flow and increases the torque and power and reduces emissions. Dual VVT-I have both intake and exhaust variable valve timing systems inside cam gears. Because of that Dual VVT-I can optimize both air and exhaust gas flow which increases the torque and power even more and reduces emissions. 20v 4A-GE engine have VVT and that means it is just "On Off" thing but VVT-I is continuously variable. There was also 2zz-ge engine in 7th gen celica which was VVTL-I (Variable valve timing and lifting with intelligence).

With my old single carb 1.3 if I switch to bike throttle bodies wouldnt they adjust the air intake automatically opening up all the valves over 4K revs, in a sense stage 2/3 or more Vtec, as its automatic it's air fuel mix is too in a sense A-vtec, I almost there..

So what the guy means here is that V-tec has a single camshaft with variable cam's and I-Vtec has dual camshafts with variable cam's. And that V-tec-E is also an SOHC with the capability of turning off some Valve's by the help of closing a cam tip in one of it's cam's for fuel efficiency.
