@SERGMOTIVEGARAGE4 жыл бұрын
Bro, honda doesn't use a VTC exhaust cam gear. VTC actuation is only controlled on the intake side which is why you can switch from 25 degree VTC gear to the 50 degree gear. Only way you can change cam timing on the exhaust side is with a adjustable exhaust cam gear.
@milanmastracci4 жыл бұрын
Maybe I'll have to rip that cam sprocket apart. I am going to be switching to a 40 degree gear for my intake I know that. I'm still learning as I go. I know that the fuel in my area will be the only drawback since E85 isn't readily available.
@vladdutz204 жыл бұрын
Good comment, i have pointed that above in a comment, it is easy to spot that vtc is used on the intake side only because when you removed the camshafts from the k24a2 block you could see that there are 2 oil passages under your left hand for the intake, used for advancing and retarding the timing, but only one passage on the exhaust side used for lubrication. Also if you inspect the sprockets closely you can see that the intake one has a ridge because it is made of 2 sliding pieces, whereas the exhaust one is a solid block, even if it has about the same thickness. It is thicker for balancing the 3 lobe pairs that are heavier than a single cam design
@HarleySLA Жыл бұрын
I agree with you, on the engines we're looking at here. But Honda has definitely used variable valve timing on the exhaust side in other engines. The reason why was to eliminate the need for an EGR. Learned that at Honda school, kind of an interesting approach to emissions. Not nitpicking your comment, just thought someone might find it interesting because I definitely did when I learned about it. Cheers 🍻

Good info! The crank pos sensor difference is pretty reminiscent of the Honda H series DOHC motors, on those, the usdm obd2 h22a4’s use a similar setup except the crank pos sensor bolts onto the oil pump which is bolted to the front bottom of the block. On jdm h22/23 they use a crank angle sensor which is in the middle of the back of the block reading the crank between cyl 2 and 3. For that reason any jdm h series swap will likely require transfer of a usdm oil pump for the CKP sensor

still mismatching head and bore it's not great. machine the head to suit, then yes :)
@noblewon35074 жыл бұрын
Yeah the k24a2 and k20z3 head is a pretty bad ass set up. Tune is the biggest factor when running it. Got to upgrade the oil pump at that time or the k20 head is basically useless because the k24 doesn't have the reving ability without it. so there would be really no sense in pairing it with a K20 head unless you upgraded the pump as well. Even then you can't get the full potential out of the k20z3 head , you have to be careful of the VTC degree.

milanmastracci, great content as always! One piece of unsolicited advice is to purchase a new RBC VTC to ensure you don’t get the dreaded VTC rattle on cold start. I bought a used one for my TSX and encountered that rattle a couple months after the install. Call it cheap insurance, but buying a new one could save you some headache and will net you more low to midrange power over the stock 25 degree VTC from the TSX. I believe the VTC from the 09 TSX is a 50 degree one, so you may not need to modify an existing RBC VTC to 45 degrees.

That's a good idea! The only engine parts that I will be reusing for my build is the crankshaft, the engine block, the oil pan, the cylinder head, and the cylinder head tower. Everything else will be upgraded, including the VTC actuator. I have a custom one going in this engine.

Someone should make an inline 6 based on the K-series. Imagine an aftermarket replacement for 2J's and RB's and Honda based. 3.6L, smoother, still high rpm.

I pretty much have 2 builds going on. My first one is a k24a1 CR-V bottom end with a K20z3 head with the head being completed except for the cams and the second build is a k24a2 TSX engine getting ready to tear down the block

Great clear and precise explanations of the differences between the different K series. I have both an 04 and an 09TSX and was wondering what the difference was between the 2 engines. The 09 is definitely easier and cleaner to do an oil change on thats for sure.

Boosting is only a headache if u don’t do it the right way. It’s Not about only slapping a turbo without all supporting mods to engine and fuel management Cheap Build= Cheap Results

I know this is well late I hope you can reply, I know you had to have the machine shop modify the block for the k24a on the newer Z block . So would you need to modify the k24a block for the newer k24 Z style head? Or would the head have to be modified? Or would no changes need to be made?

Thank you guys for correcting me. The "VTC actuator" for the exhaust is not what I said it is. Honda only has VTC on the intake sprocket. If you have any ideas why the exhaust sprocket is thicker and not just a regular gear, please enlighten me! The more ya know :)

It's cause it helps with balancing of the cam so when vtec happens it's not harsh and is more smooth.

The K series seem to have a major issue with exhaust camshafts getting pitted. I had four different vehicles babied from day one having this issue. If one has religiously done oil changes and used synthetic it just delays the issue post 150K if not then it hits between 80K and 120K (Honda recommends adjusting valve lashes at 110K this is when most discover the issue). Most Honda forums claim this was an issue between 2003 -2004/5 but I have seen this issue post-2007. Honda engines are not like what they used to be.

I’ve been researching this for months, I know you can do it with a stock block and internals from the 9th gen SI. Do you know what modifications are needed to bolt the head on?
@4EverSuzuki4 жыл бұрын
Are you planning on porting the K24a2 head? I know one of the main reasons people generally like to get the a2/z1 heads is because of the flow capabilities vs the K24a2.
@milanmastracci4 жыл бұрын
Yes I will be. Stock, it isn't the BEST flowing head, however with it ported, it flows very well

Why won’t they make a RWD or AWD 4 cyl V-Tech setup that’s aggressively tuned around the 3-400 hp and 3-350 tq and charge 40-50k? Can they not profit from that? I’d buy that in a heartbeat!

Good video I was just wondering why no one uses the k23 from the Acura RDX It makes decent power in that heavy suv
@ryansterling42264 жыл бұрын
Because the K23 has effectively a J Series bellhousing cast and effectively a matching J Series bellhousing bolt pattern on the engine block, so it's not a straight forward engine to use for 4 cylinder K Series builds. It requires lots of custom work and parts to make it work in any car that was originally any other Honda inline 4. However, one advantage the K23 turbo from the RDX has is that since it has a J Series bellhousing bolt pattern, you can take a J Series 6 speed manual and with a little work you can build a strong setup with the taller overall gears the J Series 6 speeds have compared to the K Series 6 speeds, and you can take an LSD out of any Acura J Series 6 speed manual and have the ring gear modified to adapt the Acura LSD to fit, which that way you retain the Honda Accord 6-6's 3.55 FD and have the Acura LSD with it instead of the Acura J Series LSD which is a ~3.27 FD. The Honda Accord 6-6's torqueier 3.55 FD will give you stronger acceleration versus the Acura ~3.27 which will accelerate a bit slower (especially off the line) bit has a slight advantage in total top speed potential due to the taller FD gear. So if you're going for lower rpm at freeway cruising, the Acura FD gear is better, as well as if you're doing a higher horsepower build and trying to go for an even higher total top speed. Otherwise the 6-6 Accord's 3.55 FD gear wins in every other regard for performance. Anyways, the RDX turbo K23 has very limited aftermarket support, which is the main reason it's not a sought after engine to build, also it's rather uncommon since it was a much lower total production volume than any K24 series vehicle, and the K24's (no matter if it's the A series K24's [K24A2/4/8] or the Z series K24's [K24Z2/3/7] such as what's found in Accords and TSX's) are much better supported by the aftermarket.
