A couple clarifications: the Necrons didn’t create the C’tan, they found them, they aren’t unending as they canonically cannot reproduce anymore so if one dies that’s it, the Celestial Orrery (map that can destroy a star) was one of their weaker weapons from the War in Heaven
@joefish5689

They created the bodies of the C'tan, he could've done a better job specifying that for sure

Confirmed on everything BUT the Orrery being a weaker strategic weapon by the War In Heaven metrics. I haven't hear that anywhere.

Szarekh gave the orrery a pass when it came to destroying the most powerful weapons from the war. He didnt see it as a big a threat as the others

Questionable. There is no indication C’tan were as strong before they met Necrontyr, they were gaseous entities that feeds on stars. It is entirely possible that Necrontyr made them what they are while trying to create bodies for them, feeding them large amounts of information in process.

Clarification of clarification. The orrey isnt a weapon. It can however be used as one.

One of my favorite things about the Necrons, which doesn't have a ton of attention drawn to it and doesn't get mentioned in this video, is that, in a setting where nearly everyone else is forced to use a Faster-Than-Light method that is ludicrously dangerous, the Necrons have a pile of different safe, reliable FTL methods just to stunt on everyone else. Among others that we've seen, they have: Inertialess Drives: their main ship engines. As the name implies, makes their ships have zero inertia allowing instaneous acceleration to any desired speed as well as the ability to instantly stop. In the old Battlefleet Gothic tabletop game this was represented by Necron movement being simply "point your ship in the direction you want it to go and move it whatever distance you want" while everyone else had to deal with ship headings, turning radii, etc. Phase Shifters: The Necrons have devices that let them shift their stuff into a different plane of reality where distances work different (kind of like the Warp, but completely safe to use and without the annoying "sometimes you come out at the wrong point in time" thing). Special mention to the Thokt Dynasty, which has taken its entire capital planet and stuffed it into a pocket dimension using these. Eternity Gates: Portal network allowing instant travel between any two desired gates regardless of distance between them. A very portable technology, used on their Night Scythe aircraft to transport in troops from their tomb worlds. Obviously, the drawback is that you need to get someone out there with a destination gate first. The Ghostwind: Used by Flayed Ones, a weird parallel dimension of total darkness. Similarly to the Phase Shifter dimension, allows extremely fast travel. Dolmen Gates: Just to style on those pointy-ears, Dolmen Gates tap into the Eldar's Webway and allow Necrons to use that network if they want.

The tactical advantage of reliable travel plus the immense amount of fire power they have makes me understand why they'd likely win the war. Thanks for all the extra details!

One other book I recommend is Severed by Nate Crowley, a story about Nemesor Zahndrekh, a fan favorite character who makes cameos and minor appearances in the other two series Pancreas mentions in the video. It's a short novella and can be read in a single afternoon. For context, Zahndrekh is likely one of, if not, THE greatest military genius in the galaxy. Not just for the Necrons, but the entire setting. There is, however, one issue: he has hardcore dementia. A lot of high-level Necrons didn't take to the bio-transference very well and are pretty damn crazy, some refuse to see reality and believe they are still flesh and blood. Zahndrekh takes this a step further: not only does he think he is a Necrontry, but that everyone he sees and fights against is a Necrontyr. He thinks he is still a flesh and blood soldier during the Necrontyr Civil War, which takes place before their species made contact with the C'tan. He sees Space Marines, Tau, Eldar, Orks, and even Tyranids as a fellow Necrontyr; for the Tyranids, though, he thinks the enemy is loosing an unusually large number of war hounds on to the battlefield. This means, unlike every other member of the entire Necron race, he is the only one who treats the enemy with legitimate respect and adheres to the ancient Necontyr Code of Conduct in War. No tricks, no mass extinction super-weapons, no assassins, no C'tan poke-balls, just straight forward army vs army chess match. Despite this handicap, and being loonier than a cartoon character, he is the only Warhammer character I know with a flawless track record. Guilliman, Horus, Imotekh, the Swarmlord, the Lion, and even the Emperor has suffered a major setback or even a loss, but not Zahndrekh.

I'll add that his efficiency is in part due to the classic "Inspector Gadget and Penny/Brain the dog" dynamic he has with his main bodyguard ( though Necrons use Vargard) Lychguard Obyron, who is completely lucid, but has long given up hope of helping Zahndrekh regain his full awareness. Instead, he acts to protect him and make sure his delusions aren't disturbed by annoying reality. Think hyper-competent and hyper-lethal Birtish butler and spymaster. With a Warscythe. My favorite bit was something I gleaned from another video about Necrons, where Zahndrekh implies to Obyron that he may at least in part be playing a charade by pretending to be a bumbling fool, both for strategic advantage, and because the world of 40k and the current issues plaguing the Necrons are so bad he'd rather live a comforting illusion.

@@pierrevulcan3683 I think the novella implies that he goes in and out of his senility but plays along with it when he’s lucid to keep up appearances and to convince himself to enjoy the benefits of his immortality to avoid confronting the terrible existential dread of being a Necron.

The Infinite and the Divine, and Severed, are hands down two of the best 40k books ever written, and both books prove that if the Necrons really wanted to, they could turn the galaxy into an ashtray and not bat a living metal eyelid.

Yep, in 10th their rez protocols changed too. They are (as of posting this comment) the faction that won the largest tournament of 40K this year and pretty strong, possibly the strongest in the game for the next 3 months.

Technically the necrons can make more of themselves, but it's a bit janky, they have to take a living being and perform the biotransference on them, this will produce a necron.

Honestly the only reason Necrons didn't take over the galaxy already is bc GW needs the setting to keep on going. If the Necrons decided to get their shit together and conquer the galaxy there isn't really anything other factions, including Chaos, could do...

Necrons are awesome. If i could afford another army they would be what I would collect. Also I have to recommend Baldermort's 2 part video on the Silent King and the War in Heaven. It adds some character to the souless machines.

It should be noted that all the mechanics listed in this video are from 9th edition of the tabletop game. The current edition is 10th so a bunch of it has changed.

6:40 Most Necrons shun body modifications. Heck, some lore stated that the Old Ones DID offer help, but the changes needed to overcome the inherited genetic curses from their home star would make the Necrontyr cease to be Necrontyr in their view. So the resistance to body alterations runs deep, but this guy is the most ambitious and ruthless of all their scientists. While others wish to return to flesh to regain what they lost for immortality, he pursues godhood. Effectively seeking to transcend the limitations and become as a C'Tan at their height. So what's a few extra legs and arms? He didn't mourn the loss of his frail flesh, so why shouldn't be maximize his potential while waiting on godhood?
@bthsr7113
@bthsr7113 8 ай бұрын
Flayed ones don't long to return to flesh, they think they ARE flesh. As in they try to eat and drink, but they can't, so the hunger and thirst increase, further eroding their mind code to the point they're so desperate for sustenance that they try to consume sentient life. Smearing that over their face plate takes the edge off, but not for long.

illuminor szeras is the most psychotic scientist in the galaxy, even outdoing the dark eldar haemoculi and emperors childrens chief apothecary fabius bile in cruelty
@rustkarl
@rustkarl 8 ай бұрын
That’s a bit too far. He’s callous and cruel, and his victims would certainly love the sweet release of death but what he does is incidental and while contemptuous, is less actively malicious. He’s nowhere near as vile as the haemonculi. And to an extent not nearly as vile as Fabius who casually uses excruciation as a tool, flays people for his coat and seeks to supplant the population of the galaxy. He hits a solid third but the first and second places have a head and shoulders above him.

rad and yeah necrons were OP at least in 3rd edition when I first played the game. It was NOT fun fighting necrons considering they were tough as hell hit hard and could just get back right up sometimes. It felt exciting from a lore perspective though since I played Eldar but still.
