Just a slight correction, while Vladimir Nabokov was originally from Russia, Lolita isn't really a Russian novel in any meaningful sense, having been written in English long after he became a US citizen, first published in France and taking place in the US from the point of view of an Anglo-French immigrant. In fact Nabokov's own Russian translation of the novel is kind of notorious for "jelly donuts" levels of awkward attempts at cultural localization, which were understandable at the time given the USSR's isolation from the West and Nabokov's own disconnect from his native culture, but nowadays read as unbearably cringe and fool nobody into thinking the book was ever meant for a Russian audience.

I remember when the internet was young. Back then, (old man voice) "back in my day", lolicon wasn't seen as a big deal. It really wasn't. You could go to a forum, say you love lolicon, and the most you'd get is a "that is a little weird, but okay" response. You could Google lolicon in an image search, or any search engine, and have hundreds of results instantly. The internet back then wasn't filled with moral grandstanding normies, you could admit all kinds of degeneracy and no one cared. The internet was like the wild west. Hell, I remember a 4chan thread where I was told to image search something and see what happened, and I was a gutsy teen. Instantly got hundreds of softtcore cp pics of fully unclothed children, actually professionally done. I closed immediately and feared police for the next year, a 'party van' as it was known in my day. For good or bad, the internet used to be a much wilder, and scarier, but also more free, place.

I reckon the "loli" trope woks better in VTubing is because most "loli" VTubers are subversions of the trope, at least some times. Little and cutesy in appearance and voice, but very adult in behavior. Swearing, jokes about taxes, quick wit, feeling like they're old when hearing new slang, etc. In this way, the VTubing sphere's interpretation of the "loli" trope is a semi self aware joke and an extension of VTubing's whole schtick: here's an adult pretending to be an anime girl. The ping ponging back and forth between the cutesy character and the adult actor is all part of the charm.

About loli in general, this issue is not going to be solved anytime soon, I guess, because a lot of people still have misunderstand about it Afaik 1. many people think that loli and lolicon mean the same thing, but they don't. 2. Liking loli won't make you a lolicon, because lolicon is when you are too obsessed with loli (same with shotacon, fathercon, siscon, brocon etc.) 3. Liking loli doesn't mean they also like to lewd loli, many people like loli just like they are cute like cats, dogs etc (pure) 4. I love this video because it covers most things correctly, but I'm afraid I have to disagree with some things. Loli can be adult-like, called a legal loli, and Lolis can be a young character. If the girl looks like a teenager, it is Bishojo, but both Loli and Bishojo are moe. Loli can be cute and not act super dumb like there is "Loli" in Lucky Star named Akira Kogami, who tries to act "Loli" but can act crazy. Also, Tigar is a loli, but she is Tsundere as well. Not all characters have a Loli trope only and might mix with other tropes, as you said with the Chuunibyou and Loli. I don't care if you like to lewd the Loli or Bishojo as long you don't hurt real ladies, and you should check a book called The Moe Manifesto: An Insider's Look at the Worlds of Manga, Anime, and Gaming by Patrick W. Galbraith. It is an excellent book; you can find a pdf book online.

This seems like the place to be a kimoi otaku, so in my opinion any character with a preteen body automatically fits the description, regardless of any other factors. It becomes more murky with a character like Megumin, who is a teenager but still has a petite body type and very youthful personality. Taiga absolutely is a loli. She's been referred to as one by Japanese Otaku and the people who've worked on the show in interviews, magazines, etc for years now. There's a reason why all of the porn parodies involving Toradora have the lolicon tag on them. The term has more to do with how the characters look, not their age. Their age and the way they act can be relevant in determining whether a character could qualify as a loli/shouta or not (assuming it is unclear based on their appearance alone), but neither of those aspects serve as the primary form of identification. If you had a character that was written to be very young and acted very young, but looked absolutely nothing like a young person, then they would not qualify as a loli/shouta. It's almost like saying Giorno from Jojo is a shouta because he's 15.

Taiga is absolutely a legal Loli. I think many people, me included, love to have clear-cut opinions and definitions for everything. Sadly our world is rarely just black or white so we really should stop pretending it is. Loli is more of a vague idea based on a few common tropes than a rigid definition with undisputable criteria. Anime is another one of those terms that has multiple conflicting definitions, each including Anime which does not conform to the usual asthetic or excluding Cartoons that would totally blend into the Anime category were it not for some arbitrary criteria.

People get caught up on taking the meaning of the word literally, but the trope is a lot more nuanced than most realize. I see a lot of confusion surrounding not just this topic with anime, but so many related topics in general. Some of that is understandable, but I agree with what you said about the world rarely being black and white. Unfortunately, there will always be people who refuse to acknowledge the grey area.

I disagree with the statement that all shota and lolis are underage, bc most of the lolis and shotas seems they will be in the range of 9-12 or even lower. You use Yoko and Violet as an example and some people are mentioning characters like Jotaro bc he is 17. While you said age is a factor, its overlook that *most* of the lolis are shota do have a very child look and not a teenager or someone on their 15 and above.

I want to point out that most reference you said about Lolita, are from someome that didnt read the novel. Im not saying this to accuse you, but EVERYONE that relate loli and lolita so much, are people that didnt read it. First and foremost, the most important thing to understand about Lolita MC, is not his relationship, but his mind and behaviour. He is almost psycho, he is a MURDERER, his obsession its not the same thing as attraction to a specific type of person Anyway,, in the story, MC meet Lolita when she is 12, but after that he leave for years. His obsession starts when she is 16 and act... well, very weirdky in the story. Everything explode when the girl go out in the world and meet people This novel is not about the relationship between the two, which last.... 5 pages? Of course what you said is true in pop culture, people think that, and that become the truth. I just wanted to address this because people dont read those niveks anymore, and the actual story is being forgotten Good video anyway. As a loli vtuber enjoyer, i really love the acts that some people put up to it. A bit like idol fan loving being lied to (oshi no ko reference lol). I'm mostly of the opinion that it's just strictly a body type choice. Attitude etc is merely secondary and adds to it, and I definitely think Taiga counts as a loli, as does Futaba Igarashi from "My Senpai is annoying" despite not having the personality types in this. Also I think Tatsumaki (OPM) and Rebecca (Edgerunners) are both considered lolis by their creators and don't fit into that personality bubble either. Of course, on the other extreme, there is that clip floating around where other holomems discuss whether gura is a loli and I think most or all decided on no? Complicated topic, but the most important aspect is: Lolis aren't real people, I wish people would stop treating them as such. I also wish people would stop harassing petite women.
