Tau armour both infantry and vehicle/mech armour is generally weaker than imperial. They are in between Eldar and Imperium, the Eldar are super glass cannons their weaponry is completly horrifying but they die like flies if they are cornered and out in the open. The Tau are similar they actually play the most like a modern army. Also their standard infantry rifle pulserifle is basicly the equivalent to an Imperial Plasma weapon however the imperia ldesign is more powerfull yes but it overloads fast and 3 out of 4 plasma weapons used during a battle explode in their wealders hands killing them either by exploding ore overheating the moment a chaos space marine charges at them. The Taus greatest advantage against the Imperium is the fact that they are a rather New race meaning they continoue to develop and research ofcource now with belisarius Cawl the Imperium had some extreme technological adcances but at the end most of what Cawl achieved is simply what the great crusade era had but a little bit better. The technological advances are present yes but still mostly the Imperium uses worse tech than what they used 5000 years ago. The Tau in contrast advance their tech level basicly every year, give them another 500 years and they have the same tech as dark age humanity if not better.

To add to that, their combat armor gives the cover of carapace but less armor. And while they have their super-strong iridium alloy, just like imperium adamantine, it’s so rare that they almost never use it outside of starships.
