thank you for this detailed visual review. it helped tremendously to ensure the steps i thought were correct were indeed such. idk if i'll ever get a massive wrench socket solely for this one purpose, but if i ever do, i'll mail you $5 as commission. 😂

Where's all the tool specs and information though?
@thehatchback24077 ай бұрын
Good question worth mentioning. I don't specify tool sizes because they're common. The oil filter wrench is 74.5mm. Overtime I will include more voice overs.

Good but, loosen the oil filler cap before draining. Empty the first new oil container. Start the engine to fill new filter. Measure the oil level and, finally, top up to the correct level

Thanks for mentioning. Never thought to do that thinking oil would leak from the oil filter housing. I have an oil change coming up and will loosen the cap prior to draining and compare if the oil drains more quickly.

@@thehatchback2407 I think the gent meant the oil filler cap on top of the engine. Loosening it would allow for a shorter drain time, because, as the oil drains out, the volume is replaced by the air drawn through the oil filler neck.

What is the tool you use for the oil filter orange plug?
@thehatchback24073 ай бұрын
That orange plug is a plastic molded part with an o-ring. There is a special VW tool you can buy, T40057. But, I don't have the patience for it so I use any tool with a blunt end. Push up on the orange part and wedge it crooked. It will remain crooked by itself. Be careful not to scratch the o-ring or o-ring surface.

Could I use a normal socket or would I need a filter socket to get the filter off?
@thehatchback24073 ай бұрын
If you're lucky you can unscrew the filter housing by hand. That rarely happens for me, and most often need the large socket adapter.

Why do you wipe the bottom engine block with the old oil?
@thehatchback2407 Жыл бұрын
Great question. Years ago I made the mistake of obsessively cleaning all the oil off the engine surfaces. When you do that every aluminum surface will oxidize and steel surface will rust. If you want to prevent the steel surfaces from rusting, like the bottom of the oil pan, coating the pan with oil will preserve the paint and metal, and appear new like it was just released from production. I like to coat all aluminum and steel surfaces, including nuts and bolts.

@@thehatchback2407 that makes sense. Thanks for the reply and the video!
